For Tom Angelripper, his thrash metal band Sodom is a perfect vehicle to bluntly take a stand. Like few other musicians on this scene, he personifies - along with down-to-earthiness and honesty - a healthily critical position on political authorities and decision-makers from finance and industry. On their latest album, In War And Pieces, Sodom focus on the worst excesses of power: arrogance, greed, spotlight-seeking, fanaticism, corruption, cowardice and oppression.
Tom states: "I've always written about what's going on in the world, about the injustice and mistakes that happen everywhere. I know that you can't change anything politically that way, but I would like to at least comment on the situation and generate an awareness of this deplorable state of affairs. Being a singer in a metal band allows me to voice my anger to a large audience."
Veteran thrashers Sodom have entered the studio to record the new album, In War and Pieces. According to the band, the album will be released later this year, on November 22th by the SPV/Steamhammer record label.
Famous producer Waldemar Sorychta - who previously worked with such acts as Tiamat, Moonspell and Sentenced - has been hired for the recordings.
Sodom bassist/vocalist Thomas "Angelripper" Such recently said the following about the new material: "There has never been a Sodom album which is so wide-ranged, as powerful and as typically Sodom as this one."
German thrash legends Sodom will be releasing their Lords Of Depravity II DVD on June 25th in Germany, June 28th throughout Europe and on July 13th in the North America via SPV/Steamhammer. Sodom will be holding a release party for their Lords Of Depravity II DVD on June 26th in Berlin, Germany at Blackland.
The double digipak DVD with O-Card features two DVD's. DVD 1 contains the complete history 1995-2009 of approximately 230 minutes. DVD 2 features the band's 25th anniversary at Wacken 2007 (old band members), with a few video clips and deleted scenes (approximately 180 minutes).
German thrash legends Sodom have cancelled their upcoming US tour.
The band's statement reads as follows: "Due to solid problems with our local tour promoter and getting our Visa in time, we are forced to cancel the upcoming shows. We already had our suitcases packed and were ready to go. We are awfully sorry to take these steps, but everybody acquainted with the entering provisions of the USA knows what we're talking about. We are deeply disappointed by this situation, but in the end there's the awareness, that not everything is done to our entire satisfaction.
We are "only" the musicians, who would have loved to rock the USA again. We owe this to our fans, even more because we made ourselves scarce in the US since the foundation of this band, of course through no fault of our own. The one who botched this up will have to be confronted with the local organizers and club owners and account for his faults.
Tom Angelripper of German metallers Sodom has issued the following update on the band's MySpace blog:
"The current economic problems have overtaken and finally reached the music business, too. Also, the labels have to suffered, and in our case, this applies to the label SPV. This is also applied to the artists when it comes to the well-planned releases which had to be deferred. But now SPV is newly built up and ready for action. They are currently concentrating on the remainder of the bands like us. Therefore there will be no barrier. Finally, we have to file here and there in the studio to our and your satisfaction.
There has never been a Sodom album which is so wide-ranged, as powerful and as typically Sodom as this one.
Original drummer of German thrashers Sodom, Chris "Witchhunter" Dudek, who left the band in 1992 has recently died on Sunday the 7th of September.
The message on the official Sodom site reads:
I want to inform you that Chris Witchhunter died last Night. A few hours ago we received a message from Witchhunters Mom that Chris is dead. We are shocked and stunned this time but we want to tell all Sodom Fans that one of the founding Members of Sodom gone forever. At first we thought that this is not true but by the tears of Chris Momů it´s true!
Long-running German thrashers Sodom will play a special 25th anniversary set at this year's Wacken Open Air festival, which is scheduled to take place August 2-4 in Wacken, Germany.
The 120-minute performance will kick off with four songs from the band's latest, self-titled album, after which the group will be joined by several ex-members for a set of songs that have rarely or never before been played live. Making special guest appearances during this portion of the show will be Chris Witchhunter (drums), Grave Violator (guitar), Athätor (guitar), Frank Blackfire (guitar), Michael Hoffman (guitar), Andy Brings (guitar) and Atomic Steif (drums). Sodom will then close the gig with five more classics.
Sodom, the headliner and most important band from the Full Metal Fest Vol. 1 cancelled their appearance due to unknown circumstances. The future of the event remains unknown.
The following information can be found at Blabbermouth:
"Commented the group's frontman Thomas Such (a.k.a. Tom Angelripper): "There is a problem. We can't fly. We are really pissed off, 'cause fans are waiting. the last five days we any reply from the promoter. He also cancelled three fights of our crew. So what happened? We don't want the fans to get disappointed! We also heard that the band AGENT STEEL got the same shit. We didn't get any infos about hotel address, backline etc. so we can't do a professional show the fans deserve!!!!! We are really sorry. We are disappointed, but we'll find another serious promoter help us over. The time is right after so many (17!!!) years.""
