Threshold - Former Singer Passed Away

Andrew "Mac" McDermott, the former lead singer of UK progressive metallers Threshold, reportedly passed away in England last Wednesday, August 3rd. He succumbed to kidney failure after spending four days in a coma. He was only 45 years old.

McDermott had "serious health problems" in the months leading up to his death, according to a June 2011 statement from the German melodic metal band PowerWorld, with whom McDermott recorded the 2010 album Human Parasite.

Commented Threshold guitarist Karl Groom: "Mac played a large part in the story of Threshold and appeared on five studio albums. He also sang on numerous fan club releases and live albums. Although I have not seen him since 2007 for the last video shoot in Leipzig, he still remains in our minds and there is a big sense of loss. I have spoken to and seen ex-members of the band over the last two days who are all very saddened by this turn of events. We remember Mac as being so vibrant and full of life, so find this news is hard to accept."

Added Threshold keyboard player Richard West: "Mac had such a big personality and one of the world's greatest rock voices, it's so very sad that we lost him so young. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."

Stated Ilker Ersin of PowerWorld: "A friend is gone! We are very sad about our big loss. We can't find the right words in this moment. Our sympathy and condolence goes to his family. The world lost a gently, nice, honest and warm-hearted person. We will miss him."

"I'm very sad about our big loss," PowerWorld bassist Ilker Ersin stated about his former bandmate's passing. "I can't find the right words in this moment."

McDermott performed in clubs in England and tried to establish a band there in his early years before he moved to Germany to join the band Sargant Fury. After three albums, the band dissolved and in 1998 McDermott joined Threshold as lead singer, replacing Damian Wilson.

Shortly after the release of Threshold's 2007 album Dead Reckoning, McDermott left the band, resulting in Wilson's return to the group.

McDermott's most recent musical project was Swamp Freaks, which "took some of the cool 'n' heavy from the '70s Led Zeppeling, Black Sabbath] and mashed it up with some '90s anarchy Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains] threw in some Red Hot Chili Peppers and a sprinkle of punk rock," according to the band's Facebook page.

Threshold - "Best Of" Album In November

Threshold will release their first ever "Best Of" collection in November, featuring over 140 minutes of music from all their studio albums plus some previously unreleased radio edits. The album will be released by Threshold's previous label Inside Out Music. The tracklisting for the compilation, entitled "The Ravages Of Time (The Best of Threshold)", was selected by the band in conjunction with the label. "The decision to include the unreleased single edits was because we know there are a lot of fans who are frustrated when there are edits made but not available on CD", commented Richard West. "Of course there wasn't room for everything but between us we thought it was a good overall list."

The artwork (click here) was designed by Thomas Ewerhard, who was responsible for many of Threshold's previous album covers including the iconic Hypothetical and Subsurface. The new cover was originally created for the band's previous album when it had the working title of "Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams". Threshold - Parts Ways With Singer

The following message was posted on Threshold's official website:

"Mac has confirmed that he's left Threshold. In a statement he told fans that he knew the timing was bad but thanked them for all their support. He also wished the band all the best and expressed his gratitude to the band's original singer Damian Wilson for standing in for him at last weekend's festivals.
Threshold have confirmed that Damian will perform with them at the Subtacto Festival in Norway on 4 August. Talks are also in progress to see if he can perform at all of Threshold's remaining 2007 shows."

Previously, Threshold's singer Mac has astonished his fellow band members by deciding not to perform at Metal Camp and Earthshaker festivals in Slovenia and Germany. Fortunately the band's previous singer Damian Wilson has come to the rescue and will perform at the festivals with the band for the first time since 1997. Damian Wilson is currently lead singer for the band Headspace who recently supported Ozzy Osbourne for UK shows including Wembley Arena.

Threshold - Singer Pulls Out Of Upcoming Live Shows

Nuclear Blast have issued the following update concerning UK Prog Metallers Threshold:

"Threshold's singer Mac has astonished his fellow band members by deciding NOT to perform at this weekend's Metal Camp and Earthshaker festivals in Slovenia and Germany.

"Mac was due to arrive in England on Saturday for band rehearsals, but on Saturday morning he sent us a short email saying he has to get on with his life and he's not coming", keyboarder Richard West states.
"It was totally unexpected and we're all shocked by the news. Mac won't answer our phone calls so we can't get any more information from him. With two festivals to perform next weekend our only option was to cancel the shows or find a replacement singer."
Fortunately the band's previous singer Damian Wilson has come to the rescue and will perform at the festivals with the band for the first time since 1997!

Richard: " He's now very busy learning the new material in time for Friday's show in Slovenia. We don't know what the long-term solution is, our focus right now is on the two festivals, we'll see how they go and take it from there."

Damian Wilson is currently lead singer for the band Headspace who recently supported Ozzy Osbourne for UK shows including Wembley Arena.

For more information see www.thresh.net."

Threshold - Headline First ProgPower Scandinavia

Posted on the official site of ProgPower Scandinavia:

"We're proud to announce that the first ProgPower Scandinavia festival will be held at The Rock in Copenhagen, Denmark on November 9th and 10th 2007.

Today we announce the first 4 out of a total of 10 bands for the festival - the first 4 are:
- Mercenary
- Threshold
- Circus Maximus
- Andromeda

With these 4 bands we have already determined that the festival is going to have a broad appeal; from the the very British sounding prog-rock/prog-metal of Threshold, the technical overflow from Sweden's Andromeda, the melodic progressive metal of Norway's Circus Maximus to the Danish melo-death band Mercenary, we will try to come up with a mixture of bands and styles within the power & progressive spectre that will please everyone.

The next couple of bands will be announced in a few weeks. Stay tuned"

Threshold - Guitarist Midson On Break; New Album Cover Art Revealed

New posts on the official website of the band Threshold tells us that Nick Midson (guitarist) is taking a break from the band. Member Karl Groom commented: "Nick has been thinking about this for a while. It's largely driven by wanting a break from touring and promotional activities. I'm still in contact with him regularly and we live 5 minutes from each other. The way is open for Nick to return for future albums and he is considering it."

Nick Midson is one of the founding members of Threshold. He is not featured on the band's forthcoming album, Dead Reckoning, and a replacement guitarist for the band's live shows will be announced later.

Threshold - Upcoming Album Details

UK Progressive metallers Threshold are currently recording the follow-up to their award winning 2004 album "Subsurface". Recording is taking place at Thin Ice Studios and Bray Studios in the south of England, produced by Karl Groom and Richard West.

The new album has a working title of "Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams", and the song titles are: Slipstream, This is your life, Elusive, Disappear, Fighting for breath, Hollow, Safe to fly, One degree down, Landing lights.

Mac, in the middle of vocal sessions at Bray, said: 'If I thought it would be this good I'd have joined Threshold sooner! I've got a good feeling about this album. I think things are going to snowball for us next year, I thought so even before I heard the demos. I'm having a brilliant time!'

Threshold's last album "Subsurface" picked up 15 Album Of The Month awards across the globe. Earlier this year the band moved to Nuclear Blast Records to join a highly successful roster of bands including In Flames, Nightwish and Blind Guardian.

Recording and mixing of "Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams" is expected to be complete in November, with a release planned for early in 2007.
