Immortal - Too Tr00 For Spellemann Award Nomination

Norwegian black metal squad Immortal have announced their latest album All Shall Fall was nominated for this year's "Spellemannsprisen" in Norway. The Spellemann Awards are the Norwegian equivalent of the US Grammy Awards.

The band didn't want to be part of that and rejected the nomination.

Rumor on the streets of the grim and frostbitten kingdom has it, the band stated their "thanks, but no thanks" because the Spellemann Awards are chosen by a jury and not by the fans... So technically their participation for the upcoming Metal Storm Awards is not at stake here (that is, if they are nominated of course ). Spicy detail: it was the band's label that entered the band for the Spellemann.

Other nominees for "best metal album" are Code (Resplendent Grotesque), The Cumshots (A Life Less Necessary) and Årabrot (The Brother Seed). The awards are presented on March 6th 2010.

Haha. Metal musicians are not showmen? That's the funniest thing I've read in a while - metal musicians like Immortal are all about the show. And this is anoter showman's stunt, way more "superficial and phoney" than actually going there.

I think it's quite fine they decide this way. But it's embarassing to see the fans cheer like this was some act of true heroism. I wish metalheads, musicians and fans alike, pulled their heads out of their arses.

So actually not going is "more superficial and phoney" that accepting the prize ? I can´t find the logic in that. We all know black metal bands are greatly pretensious, and Immortal might as well be the biggest of them all (excepting Mayhem I guess), but just as Lord_Regnier said, musicians got to have integrity for all about they stand for. Even if this is ridiculous, i'm still in the opinion that rejecting going there was the most sincere thing that they could possibly do.

I find it amusing because rumor has it the entire reunion/festival appearances/new album were a cash grab...

as for the "metal are not showmen" line, i wanted to respond in laughter, but was not worth the hassle of dealing with TBG.

yeah, they aren't showman. that Satam's Hockey Team stuff they wear on stage isn't a costume, that's what they wear headed down to the pub or the grocery store, right?

It is a matter of image. It wouldn't fit Immortal's image and business idea, if you will, to take part in this event. I sincerely doubt it had to do with their personal, carefully deliberated moral choices as much as their image as a band and individual musicians who consider themselves above this kind of recognition. It may have been consciously calculated, sure, but it can also be quite subconscious. Be that as it may, I find this a naive and hollow gesture.

Besides, shunning these kind of events is childish elitism. Intelligent people can judge their value for themselves, they don't need to make a number about it. If Immortal were not conserned about their image, they wouldn't have turned this into a media event.

I'm not saying it's bad either: it's human nature, and I love this ugly and pathetic humanity of ours. But just be honest about, and don't glorify them.

I really don't see anything wrong with accepting the nomination and award if they would have ended up winning. It's a great honor, and they deserve it for the awesome music they've done.
