Norwegian black metal squad Immortal have announced their latest album All Shall Fall was nominated for this year's "Spellemannsprisen" in Norway. The Spellemann Awards are the Norwegian equivalent of the US Grammy Awards.

The band didn't want to be part of that and rejected the nomination.

Rumor on the streets of the grim and frostbitten kingdom has it, the band stated their "thanks, but no thanks" because the Spellemann Awards are chosen by a jury and not by the fans... So technically their participation for the upcoming Metal Storm Awards is not at stake here (that is, if they are nominated of course ). Spicy detail: it was the band's label that entered the band for the Spellemann.

Other nominees for "best metal album" are Code (Resplendent Grotesque), The Cumshots (A Life Less Necessary) and Årabrot (The Brother Seed). The awards are presented on March 6th 2010.

I can understand how they are thinking, but like it matters? Accept the damn prize and then leave.
BudDa - 28.01.2010 at 11:52
Haha. So it was chosen by a jury..SO WHAT!!
even fans in one way or another could also consist of some kinda 'jury'
just accept the nomination dammit!
Introspekrieg - 28.01.2010 at 11:54
They knew they would never beat The Cumshots...
kea - 28.01.2010 at 12:11
Norwegian Grammy you say? No wonder Immortal doesn't want such award.

There's a tiny detail that makes significance in meaning between the price and the prize.

I.

Nice decision, Metal bands arent showmen, I wished that metallica had not gone to Grammy awrads.
Ellrohir - 28.01.2010 at 13:24
I understand them perfectly in this case...
Jiri - 28.01.2010 at 16:06
Good for them. Just when I thought they were selling out.
Ilham - 28.01.2010 at 16:51
"The Cumshots". That's the best band name I have ever heard. Wonder what they play, I can't google their name, my friend will think I'm watching porn on his pc.

Me neither.. The word, cumshots is blocked in my country.. But anyway I guess The Cumshots were the band the one that a couple had sex during their live performance..

And, Immortal consider themselves tr00 er than Mayhem? Mayhem have got one prize on 2007..
Shadowcross - 28.01.2010 at 17:42
Lol that's pretty funny.. it will be interesting to see how they go in our awards..
bard - 28.01.2010 at 17:45
That's odd. After finding an Immortal album in a hot topic a month ago or so I assumed they would totally go for something like this.
Jon - 28.01.2010 at 17:53
Think about it. It means something to your fans if you go up and accept the award and thank your fans for putting you in that position. Unless you think all your fans are misanthropic daylight-hating goblins with fantasies of raping priests. Which by this point in your career, Immortal, they are not. Sorry to be the ones to break it to you, but there are probably people out there who listen to you who don't even own a leather jacket! Shit!
Delius - 28.01.2010 at 18:05
Awards are just a bullshit way for the music industry to pat each other on the back, the only award a band should need is a room full of us (the fans) screaming lyrics at the top of our lungs and throwing up the the horns!

Oh god! How relevant.

I would not go based on the tr00ness of the event, just because ALL of the events of this kind are boring...

Completely respectable decision... Any real metal band should avoid those mainstream awards... so superficial and phoney. I think the title of this article is perfect, too tr00 for that crap!
Black Conundrum - 29.01.2010 at 03:04
Although I haven't checked this band out yet, I think this is a very respectable decision. These types of award programs usually suck. It's nice to know that these awards don't have ultimate say.
SBGMetal - 29.01.2010 at 07:25
Fuk mainstream awards

Agreed. That's what I said on this matter on another board (it was concerning Keep Of Kalessin and their participation to Eurovision):

"Metal bands should stay away from such contests as if it were a plague.
Why playing this 'harlot game' which implies showing yourself not as you are, only to please the mainstream masses who can't appreciate metal music in its pure uncompromising form?
A real metal band most likely won't make more money by doing it. The only thing they will achieve is destroying their musical integrity. From my point of view, they have much more to loose than to gain.

In a case such as this one, bands don't write music for themselves but to please non-metal fans. They bow down before people who don't care for the music they write normally.
Metal bands should not give a fuck at whatever the mainstream masses can think of them. They should not try to gain mainstream acceptance. Metal is not about gaining recognition from the average citizen who dislikes metal music."
IronAngel - 29.01.2010 at 23:00
Haha. Metal musicians are not showmen? That's the funniest thing I've read in a while - metal musicians like Immortal are all about the show. And this is anoter showman's stunt, way more "superficial and phoney" than actually going there.

I think it's quite fine they decide this way. But it's embarassing to see the fans cheer like this was some act of true heroism. I wish metalheads, musicians and fans alike, pulled their heads out of their arses.
matos - 30.01.2010 at 00:03
Haven't Darkthrone turn down the same/similar offer few years ago ?
Odium - 30.01.2010 at 01:02
Good news, It's nice to know that they still want to keep us(the fans) happy
Biedrik - 30.01.2010 at 01:30
Personally, I think that they should have accepted it in full black metal gear. Spikes, leather, corpse paint. The whole deal. Then, Abbath could have done his acceptance speech using his distinct croaking voice. That, would have been far more metal than just rejecting the award.

Oh, and they could do some fire-breathing at the end.
IronAngel - 30.01.2010 at 11:08
What Biedrik said, absolutely!
dancingdecember - 30.01.2010 at 15:35
Heh, The Cumshots eh? Like The Strokes or something?

I was gonna watch some pr0n anyway...
BF - 30.01.2010 at 18:39
All this talk about should haves and they did it for us fans or this is what I reckon they should have done...

They did what they wanted to, which to me is what metal is about, freedom of speech, choice and expression. So fuck it, go Immortal for doing what they want and choosing how they want to be recognised.
danielllewis - 30.01.2010 at 22:57
Looks like they pulled a darkthrone.

Anyways, it's funny how they allow themselves to be featured in guitar world and shit like that but they don't want to do this haha.

So actually not going is "more superficial and phoney" that accepting the prize ? I can´t find the logic in that. We all know black metal bands are greatly pretensious, and Immortal might as well be the biggest of them all (excepting Mayhem I guess), but just as Lord_Regnier said, musicians got to have integrity for all about they stand for. Even if this is ridiculous, i'm still in the opinion that rejecting going there was the most sincere thing that they could possibly do.
LeChron James - 01.02.2010 at 04:40
Rejected that shit like CHAMPS.
BitterCOld - 01.02.2010 at 04:58
I find it amusing because rumor has it the entire reunion/festival appearances/new album were a cash grab...

as for the "metal are not showmen" line, i wanted to respond in laughter, but was not worth the hassle of dealing with TBG.

yeah, they aren't showman. that Satam's Hockey Team stuff they wear on stage isn't a costume, that's what they wear headed down to the pub or the grocery store, right?

It is a matter of image. It wouldn't fit Immortal's image and business idea, if you will, to take part in this event. I sincerely doubt it had to do with their personal, carefully deliberated moral choices as much as their image as a band and individual musicians who consider themselves above this kind of recognition. It may have been consciously calculated, sure, but it can also be quite subconscious. Be that as it may, I find this a naive and hollow gesture.

Besides, shunning these kind of events is childish elitism. Intelligent people can judge their value for themselves, they don't need to make a number about it. If Immortal were not conserned about their image, they wouldn't have turned this into a media event.

I'm not saying it's bad either: it's human nature, and I love this ugly and pathetic humanity of ours. But just be honest about, and don't glorify them.
Bas - 02.02.2010 at 14:44
I wonder what they'll do if they win the MS award in the BM category...
SatyriconChick - 31.03.2010 at 19:37
I really don't see anything wrong with accepting the nomination and award if they would have ended up winning. It's a great honor, and they deserve it for the awesome music they've done.
dodstink - 04.08.2010 at 00:55
Immortal used to express themselves more original and aggressive(Pure Holocaust). Not shall fall Immortal!
