Sonisphere Finland - Thunderstorm Casualty Deceased

A severe thunderstorm hit Sonisphere Festival in Pori, Finland this afternoon (Sunday 8th) at approximately 16h00. Strong gusts of freak wind damaged the stages and knocked down tents and fences. Approximately 40 people were injured, two of them seriously so. The injured people are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Sonisphere Festival series producer Stuart Galbraith said: "Our first thoughts go out to the injured people and we sincerely hope they will have a full recovery."
The second stage was damaged beyond repair and to guarantee the safety of the audience, artists and crew the authorities closed the stage. The storm damaged Mötley Crüe's equipment behind repair, forcing their show to be unfortunately cancelled. Iggy Pop did play, performing an acoustic four-track set on the main stage, while the Sonisphere crew worked hard behind the scenes to dry everything out and make repairs to damage across the site.
Having borrowed kit from Slayer, Alice Cooper is performing a full set on the main stage and Iron Maiden's show will also perform a full set, going on stage at approximately 21h50 and playing until approximately 23h50. The police and city authorities have agreed to allow Iron Maiden to finish later than originally planned.
"We're doing everything we can to ensure that the show can take place. The show will run so long as it can run safely." said Stuart Galbraith.
A speedy recovery to those injured! We can only hope the attending Metal Storm crowd is alright.

As reported, the Sonisphere Finland festival was surprised by a severe thunderstorm this weekend causing major damages to the festival area. Several festival-goers got injured. But now, the devastating news has reached us that one of the casualties has succumbed to his injuries and died in the hospital today. ..
"We have just received news that the 50-year old male that was critically injured during the freak storm at Sonisphere has passed away. We are obviously shocked and devastated and would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim - the thoughts of Team Sonisphere, Iron Maiden and all Sonisphere fans are with you."
According to the officers, some object hit the man on his head.

Oh shit, considering the damages it caused, it was surely a huge storm, I can't even imagine how it was to be there, so sad that a day that was supposed to be great transforms into a total madness.

These summer thunderstorms can do a massive mess indeed....especially when there are lots of open air festivals all over, than it's quiet possible and dangerous that comes to such a chaos like in this case. Well, all injured get well soon.

Last year on Masters Of Rock there was also a thunderstorm...but there nothing went bad and Amon Amarth played a set, which may be called "legendary" from what i have heard

It was in the newspapers today that the two people that got severe injuries are no longer in a critical condition. I was at the festival myself and it was quite scary how the weather changed just within minutes. At first we just looked at the dark clouds gathering above the festival area and thought it was funny that the thunder storm started right after Slayer's show. Then it started to rain really heavily. There was water everywhere. The wind was so strong that I couldn't see anything and I just held my sister close to me and we ran behind the trees around which people had gathered. In the end the worst was over within seconds and then we just watched the wind rip off the roof of the smaller stage and the water flooding all over Iggy's equipment. But we had fun after all. For the rest of the day we were soaking wet, but that didn't matter. I really respect Iggy Pop for coming on stage and singing those four songs with a slightly broken microphone accompanied by only an acoustic guitar and a saxophone.

Seems like Europe's festivals aren't having a good time, first the Loveparade festival in Germany, now this. Just hope that everyone who got injured can fully recover.

As a matter of fact, there was also heavy rain at the Bulgarian edition of Sonisphere but thankfully, it stopped after 20 minutes or something and nobody got hurt. This year's European festivals are indeed not having a good time, I agree...

Yes it was hell outhere.Wind gusts were over 40 metres per second , hails flew horizontally and was a size of a golfball. I was buying a t-shirt and all of a sudden the whole structure fell on top of me  it didn't hurt much but friend of mine got hit by a flying porta potty heheeheMötley Crüe couldn't perform at all

It's not funny at all, Lit. Metalhead. (I really hope you didn't mean it this way.) I didn't know that guy or something but still, my deepest condolences go to his family and friends. It's definitely sad and devastating to get injured at a festival where the whole thing is supposed to be nice.
