Slayer - To Release Limited Edition Vinyl Box Set

Official press release

For the first time in its near-30 year history, Slayer, the single most distinctive and radical thrash metal band ever, will see its ten American Recordings albums released as a limited-edition, high-end, box set - The Vinyl Conflict.

Ten albums on 11 discs, The Vinyl Conflict will feature the band's entire Def/American Recordings catalogue: Reign In Blood (1986), South of Heaven (1988), Seasons In The Abyss (1990), the double-record Live Decade of Aggression (1991), Divine Intervention (1994), Undisputed Attitude (1998), God Hates Us All (2001), Christ Illusion (2006), and World Painted Blood (2009). The Vinyl Conflict will be released on October 12, 2010.

"Most longtime Slayer fans may not have these records at this point," said American Recordings' Dino Paredes, "or their copies are completely beat-up, so to have the complete catalog in this first-class presentation is terrific. For the newer fans, this is their opportunity to really get into this band the way that they could have if they were born 20 years earlier."

American/Sony Legacy invested a great amount of care into making The Vinyl Conflict, treating the albums the way they would treat a great jazz, classical, Bob Dylan or Miles Davis record, something that isn't normally done for metal records. All ten albums have been re-mastered from the original analog flat master tapes and were pressed on the highest quality, 180-gram audiophile vinyl at RTI, the most-respected pressing plant in the U.S. and among the best in the world. Lacquers were cut and re-cut several times to ensure the highest sound quality. The individual vinyl discs will come in a standard, clear inner sleeve to preserve the vinyl, are then housed in high-quality litho-wrapped jackets, and then boxed in a hardcover slipcase. Additionally, reproductions of the original LP inner sleeve artwork were converted to 12X12 inserts.

"The vinyl box is a real treat for fans, especially with today's renewed and increased interest in vinyl," added Sony Legacy's Adam Farber. "It's been years and years since the Slayer vinyl has been in print - only the two most recent albums are currently available on vinyl, the rest have been out of print for years and very hard to find. These albums sounds spectacular - they sound like you've never heard them before."

"Everything about The Vinyl Conflict - the look of it, the feel of it - is very strong, very powerful, very Slayer," added Parades, "from the music to the dripping, bloody pentagram on the front of the box. It's perfect.

Meh, it could have been good if they dropped two of the 90s albums(except for you know which) and included Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits and had the badass covers for all the records.

I don't like those "false" covers of God Hates Us All & Christ Illusion.

Those are actually "censored" versions of the original album covers, as the originals were deemed to be offensive. My copy of "God Hates Us All" has the censored cover only as a slip, The booklet contains the real cover on the front. My copy of "Christ Illusion" has the original cover.

Really, I think this is a stupid idea. Slayer are nearing the end of the career, surely this could have waited till their final album/s are released. Especially as they are still on the same record label, as far as I know...

Quite an impossibility really seeing those aren't Def Jam releases and the copyrights are with Metal Blade. That same problemoccured with theirSoundtrack to The Apocalypse box.

Wow, I didnt even notice that! lol

Yep, its different to the one I have as well. (A shadowy looking Jeff Hanneman playing live) The picture they're using as the cover in this box set, is the one that's on the cover of the special booklet inside my cassette of Decade Of Aggression.

My guess is it will cost between 200 and 300 euros. Which is quite a normal price for 11 slabs of vinyl (remember Decade is a 2LP)

My guess is this cover is of the US release, and the one we have of the European/Rest Of The World. Btw I prefer my shadow to the one they will use here.

I also have the slip thing in GHUA and the original cover on CI. Both CD versions, no vinyls. Were CI really censored or is it just because it's the edit/limited/whatever -version which includes the song "final six". Anyway the first cover is so much better.

By the way.. I dislike when special versions of the album come afterwards... -> Slayer, Cradle of Filth and many more.

The censored cover is on the later version of the album which contains "Final Six". Although Im pretty sure the cover was changed because the original was deemed offensive, and some places wouldnt stock it.

And yes, couldnt agree more. Its totally ripping off fans releasing a "special edition" of an album sometimes only months after it first came out. I usually just download the extra tracks when that happens. lol

@Marcel: Yep, I prefer the shadow cover as well. The green logo looks kewl too! lol

The US CD for Decade of Aggression also features the shadowy Jeff. I believe that image was the cover of the insert booklet or something. I recall seeing it, but obtained my copy of the cd back in '91-92 when i traded a copy of Nirvana's "Bleach" for it. i recall seeing it, but it's not the cd cover.

I almost jizzed in my pants, but as Val pointed out: no Show No Mercy, no Hell Awaits (for copyright purposes, I know). Needless to say, this box set is lacking.

Oh well it could have been greater, but still seems as something nice for the biggest fans, I won't have enough money for this haha, so maybe it will have to wait. Also I don't have something to play vinyls

Could've sworn the "censored" Christ Illusion cover was a limited edition rather than censored.

Its not really a limited edition, rather a special expanded edition. I never see the old version with the original cover in shops anymore. Only the one with the new cover.

I only ever see the special edition now. lol

I just rememberd that the original cover was censored even before the special edition came out though. My copy of Christ Illusion has a slip (similar to the one for GHUA) which is white. The letters in the Slayer logo show parts of the actual cover, but the rest of it is white.

only my copy of GHUA has a slip case. I never came across GHUA without a slip case though. And my Christ Illusion copy doesn't have a slip case. I never came across CI with one, either.

That is the slipcase I have in my copy of CI. lol The original cover is behind it on the booklet. I own both the normal and expanded editions of GHUA, and after a quick check, I was right that the expanded edition doesnt have the slipcase. Or at least the one I have doesnt have it.

@FX: As has been mentioned already, "Hell Awaits", (and "Show No Mercy") are owned by Metal Blade, so cant be included on the compilation.

the funny thing about GHUA and the slipcase is that it pretty much inspired the same amount of stupid backlash (if not more) than the original album cover that was being, uh, covered up.

the album itself was released on 9/11/01 (*that* 9/11... which made Payback an instant favorite of mine), and some nutjobs got their panties in a twist because all those crosses

resembled an overview of... AIRPLANES!
