Cynic - Making Progress On Upcoming Album

Cynic are still busy working on writing new material. Guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal issued the following update on the forthcoming release:

"I've been working away in the home studio writing lots of new songs and keeping off the grid to stay creatively focused. Apologies for having been a bit reclusive in our digital age of informational abundance! It's safe to say that Cynic already has plenty of material for a new record, but something keeps the inspiration going to write more. I feel like I'm on for the ride and just seeing what manifests as a result of sitting on the train and looking out the window. As we move further along and closer to 'destination recording', the album will start to shape itself and the appropriate songs will be chosen.

We're looking at late summer/early fall to enter the studio. At the moment, I have no idea when the record will be released. Maybe later this year or early next. We're also in communication with lots of fantastic new musicians who will be involved. I can already sense this next album is going to take our listeners on a whole new sonic adventure that words cannot yet describe. I say this because the work is feeling based and there's a lot of life poured into these embryos that will speak for themselves when heard.

I'm always amazed at how living life informs the art so directly and yet we have no power over it. The songs have a directness and urgency unlike anything we've done before due to a bountiful influx of concentrated life experiences. Thank the universe for the gift of music.

I am so absolutely grateful to be alive and to be able to share the potency and beauty of music with you. In the meantime keep spreading the love and thank you for taking this journey with us."

Paul Masvidal has yet to fail us in delivering a good record. Also he's just a smart guy who knows what he's doing. Unlike some metal musicians today he hasn't tried to alter his sound to a more popular style like morbid angel recently did with their latest record. Not only that, but all the recent material he's done (recent being since 2008) has been damn good material, which is amazing considering how much time he spent away from doing metal music. I am genuinely excited for this upcoming record as Cynic has always delivered on sculpting some thought provoking music with a dash of Hindu Philosophy thrown in. I'll be taking the journey with you Paul whenever this record is released!

Cynic most definitely altered their sound, and in a worse way than Morbid Angel.

Wonder what the odds are of Devin Townsend making an appearence on this are? Probably slim, but it would be nice.

The fact that Traced In Air and Re-Traced are not metal doesn't make them bad either.

The only thing that really disappointed me was that 'Traiced in Air' was to short in length. I really do hope that their next album blows us away, so to speak.

Hopefully Cynic will go back to the more aggressive sound of the first album.... regardless I eagerly await their next release.

yes but while Morbid Angel altered their music for a more industrial sound with hints and dashes of techno thrown in, Cynic continued to make intelligent music, it might not be as heavy as Focus, but there's still good music in Traced in Air. I mean it's not like Cynic was selling out. Paul Masvidal is a man of musical integrity. At least Paul never uttered the words "Kill a cop" in any of his songs.

I loved Traced in Air...it didn't contain too much metal to it, but the content of the songs was very thoughtful and inspiring to listen to. The entire album also felt extremely cohesive and showcased a maturity that Focus simply didn't have. While not a better record than Focus, it is a pleasing listen and it's nice to see an update from Cynic.
