This isn't a huge change in their style, if you have been paying attention. Good song, it's a shame some people won't see past the absence of growls, their loss. Time to grow up.

I liked it, although I feel that the new songs could interrupt the concerts from now on. This song between "Demon of the Fall" and "Master's Apprentices" would probably feel strange. But as I said, I liked it and I like that Opeth goes their own way. Doing what they wanna do.

I don't know about that. Watershed didn't sound THAT prog compared to this track that to be completely honest with you: Don't even sound that metal to me.

I ain't saying that's a bad thing but it's just a way to compare it to their latest album, so it is quite a change from my point of view.
Also.. I haven't heard/read too many people omplaing about growls? Have you? Not even in their thread. Probably one or two people but that's it unless you are thinking about youtube comments which don't even count to me

Written by LeChron James on 27.07.2011 at 21:44

Wow only 12 comments? I figured people would be losing their shit over this, regardless of their opinion of the song.

I don't want to post my full opinion about this song and current Opeth because I know I will get shitty comments like "oh dude you're so stuck in their past you need to grow up and you don't need 10 albums that sound the same" which don't actually have anything to do with how I feel about their latest material but that's the new trend: "If you don't like the latest 2 Opeth albums and this new song that much is because you're so stuck and need to grow up".

'70 prog rock meets swedish metal. How can you dislike this, especially if you heard at least one album from Yes or King Crimson?

+, if I may add - with a band like Opeth, you expect them to change every album. They're not some random death metalers with growl and superdark riffs; they're awesome, skilled musicians whose "modus operandi" is taking the sound to the next level. Aside from the first two albums, I don't think that ANY of they albums look like eachother (Ghost Reveries - Watershed, Damnation - Ghost Reveries, MA,YH - Still Life etc).

Exactly, which is why I don't like when people tell me "It's not like they have to make 10 similar records or anything" just because I'm not too fond of their new direction.

Ok, whats with all this "its got no growls so its not metal?" What fucking rock do you people live in. Take a good hard look at how many awesome metal bands dont have growling. Growling doesnt neccessarily indicate quality, or heaviness. Or progressiveness. Opeth is a progressive band. They change, like most band. All these people who complain that their favourite bands have changed, I ask you one question: Are you still the same person you were 10 years ago? Probably not. Opeth have been going for 20 years. A lot happens in 20 years. And musically, this is still very opeth.

What I think exactly.

Who gives a flying fuck if he growls or not. I do agree that Mikael's growls are fantastic. He is the best growler in the whole metal genre in my opinion. But when he recorded this album, he probably saw that clean singing was what suited the songs, so he ditched growls. As simple as that.

If you want the same shit all over again, stick to AC/DC and Motorhead. Opeth evolves all the time.

I haven't seen any comments in this thread or any other in this forum that said anything like "no growls = no metal".
If you are thinking about the posts I've been written... Well, yes: It doesn't sound too metal to me. Have I said that's bad? No. Damnation was a damn good album and I don't care if they are metal or not. I was just making an observation aobut their current sound.

I wrote it before and write it again: I'm kind of sick with the people that go all " omg are you always the same person after 10 years omg you need to grow up". That's just wrong tbh because it doesn't even have ANYTHING to do with this case because for the simple fact that any Opeth album has been different than the others. It's not like they are changing now. They changed from Orchid to morningrise, From Still Life to Blakwater Park, from damnation to Ghost reveries and so on... I've been loving those changes since the beginning and suddenly just because I don't happen to enjoy what happened in some parts of Watershed (I like it in small doses) or that I just don't really enjoy that much this new song... I live under a rock? C'mon man! That's unfair.

Of course, since the very debut have the changed and evolved their sound which is why I don't understand that only now you can get the tag of "wanting the same thing over and over again" just because you don't happen to like this change of all the others they have done in the past. It's lame.

You misunderstand me. Opeth has always been an evolving band, but the lack of growls happens for the first time (yes, I know, Damnation, but it was an experiment to separate 2 sides of Opeth, so it doesn't really count). And, apparently, most of the outrage about Heritage revolves around it having zero growls.

The growls are phenomenal, don't get me wrong, but they aren't everything. What really matters is the music as a whole, and from what I've heard so far, it delivers as well as most other opeth stuff, growls or no growls. I just think it's a shame that a lot of people are going to dismiss what could potentially be a great album, just because of something like that.

I guess no one acknowledges the existence of Damnation anymore... it's like a repressed memory

The comments on this site haven't been that bad about the growls, but yeah, I was talking about Youtube, Blabbermouth, etc.

I share your opinion. I mean, I really do like bands who often shift their sound and experiment with it, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have to like each and every single album that they make. I just like to be challenged by a new release, to spin it in my player for a week or two - if I like it, great, if I don't, what the heck, maybe I'll like it in a year or two. For a first couple of months, for example, I really hated the Watershed, but at some point I simply started loving it. On the other hand, I never really liked Deliverance, no matter how many times I listened to it. It's all relative, after all - Opeth is a great band, but that doesn't mean that every album or song they make is pure gold. Claiming that qould be just blind fanboy worshiping.

It's catchy song that for sure, it's not complex as their previous work that for sure also, and the same go with the songwriting which is more simple here, which this is something i don't cherish a lot ,let's not start to judge anything here until we here all the album , sure Opeth is evolving here, but the challenge here is if they could maintain their high quality through the "evolving " phase.

Edit: i forgot to say that mixing and production seems great, which a good point also.
