As previously reported, Atlanta progressive metallers Mastodon will release their new upcoming album, The Hunter, this October through Reprise Records. The band now revealed the cover artwork for the limited edition package, as can be seen below.

The artwork was once again created by AJ Fosik, a wood carver who is also responsible for the backdrop the band uses live. As said, this marks the first time Mastodon has not used acclaimed artist Paul Romano, who was responsible for all of the group's previous artwork.

In case you missed it, a new song off the new album, called "Black Tongue", is still available for streaming over here.

The Hunter limited edition package includes:

  • The Hunter CD/DVD housed in digi-pack with an alternative cover
  • 20" x 30" Lenticular Poster featuring the album cover of the standard CD
  • Augmented reality experience by Total Immersion that will contain exclusive content only available to this package (more information coming soon!)
  • Instant download of "Black Tongue"
  • A second download of "Curl Of The Burl," the first official single from The Hunter as soon as it becomes available

I didn't have the same problems with the regular artwork like a majority of folks did. In fact I think it works well with the insanity of Mastodon's music. But this is MUCH BETTER!

That looks much more in the style of previous Mastodon covers, and the sculpture is done even more justice with that design!

It's not bad, but my favorite album cover has always been the one for Blood Mountain.

Oh thats ok, but I agree completely with Angelic Storm on this. Methinks it's rearing abit too much in the vein of Blood Mountain's look. At least I'm getting more and more over the artist change from it's official artwork. Haven't heard any of the music yet...

I like this one a lot more! I think I will be getting this one (not just for the cover)
