Metalstormers, the time is here once more.

The Metal Storm Awards 2011 are now open!

Throughout January we have been painstakingly working to provide you with a run-down of our nominations for what we feel are the best albums of 2011. It is now your job to check out the cream of the crop, and vote for your favourites.

This is the eighth year of the Metal Storm Awards, and as always you have the month of February to cast your judgement. This year however, we have introduced a couple of new categories; Melodic Black and Djent/Math metal, and also split up a few of the categories that were coupled in previous years.

Don't forget to share this news with your friends, or even start your own campaign over the internet for your favourite bands to win. We have done the hard work bringing you these nominations, now let's have some fun. Useful banners and buttons can be found here.

Results will be announced on the 1st March!

Let the drama begin!

I gotta say it... This has been a good year in general. It succked for the mainstream but the new bands and the underground sure as hell had their opportunity to shine!
Lit. - 01.02.2012 at 00:16
I promise this will be my last picture post.... for a while. It just seems suitable.

First complain, missing:
Taake
Helheim (maybe)
Euphoreon (maybe)

Actually I also dislike this complaining stuff... so what the fuck its for fun

Alcest

Look at the date the album was released.... then look at the year for the albums in the awards... Then look at Alcest's latest album one more time.

I love when this happens.

I was among the fans but some weren't. On the other hand... this year was extremely tight for BM tbh. Too many good releases for me and others so it was obvious some people would be dissapointed hahahahahah. I personally see Aaskereia and Negative Plane a far greater loss than Woods Of Desolation which was good and all but in the long run it was something that has been done before XP.
Those are my two cents.

I like how Dream Theater isn't nominated. It's a bold but also a justified move based on community response

Overall I'm really satisfied with the nominations, good job staff!

Nothing is based on the community response in the nomination process, that's why there are write-in votes for people to have their say if they disagree with the choice of nominees but they were far from nomination.

My only complaint is that I'm a little disappointed that with all the tech death releases last year and that among the decision to split a couple categories like Avant Garde and Meloblack that there is no separate category for Technical Death metal. Oh well, I am already familiar with all the releases in the DM category so I've already penciled in my vote there for Archspire; 2011 was a great year for death metal and all it's subgenres so I focused most on that genre all year long. Now I just need to go through and check out the releases in all the other categories I am not already familiar with so that I can vote legitimately...

Glad you liked them! There's some really tight competition going on in some of those. Sadly... I think mastodon will win. It was a good album though but just good
JohnDoe - 01.02.2012 at 01:39
I have nothing against Dream Theater not being nominated, actually that's a good idea (all DT fanboys would have invaded and voted for them and they might/would have won), but no Arch/Matheos or Subsignal?! These two albums were very good if you ask me, especially Arch/Matheos.

They were considered, for sure, but didn't make the cut. Only 10 places after all...

Yeah Mastodon will win. I still haven't heard the album and I still have to check SubRosa and Sleestak which I'm guessing I will like a lot

I tried to hype Subsignal as much as I could but it fell a bit short. But I know what I put in my write-in box

Oh man you should have seen how long it took to count down the nominees for that category. WAY TOO fucking many albums But I still stand by my opinion that Alrakis makes more sense in the Metalgaze section.

Hahahahaha I can imagine how hard it was so many great albums and a wide variety of styles this year, but the end result looks legit.
One regret I have is finding about Reverorum ib Malacht's album too late, mindblowing to say the least

Well I'll just have to respectfully disagree. I agree there's more of an ambient element than a bm one, but I don't think that classifies it as -gaze. Regardless, I'm glad to see Alrakis nominated either way.

Looking at the noms again I suppose it isn't wildy out of place or anything in the metalgaze since the vast majority of those are in the newfangled "blackgaze" style anyway. Touchez.

Yeah, that was mostly the reason. Also, trust me on this: There was no friggin way Alrakis would have been nominated for the BM category if it went there considering the massive competition So yeah, glad that it's there. It's one of my favorite and might end up voting for it. Not sure.

Oh I believe it; I'm sure that's why we now have a melo bm category and metalgaze, just to give some bands a fighting chance. Anyways, that's it for my complaints, for now....

Hhahahaha yeah, that was actually the main reason for the melodic black... We were like "we have way too many.... but hey, we can actually split it in two considering how many we have".

All nominees in that category are superior to lame SubRosa There is really nothing special about that album. Their selling power is the womaen and the boring violin which doesn't add a thing to their run of the mill sludge.
BlueMobius - 01.02.2012 at 02:58
I'm pissed Absu isn't a choice anywhere in thrash. Abzu was a way better album than a lot of the choices. Shame on the Metalstorm staff for overlooking that one. Even if I write it in, it simply not being on the list will mean others will forget.
