Danny Carey, the drummer of US progressive metal act Tool, has stated in a recent interview with his drum sponsors Vic Firth that the band plans to start the tracking for their new album in June/July. He speculates that recording, mixing and mastering could take around four months and so the record could be ready at the end of the year.

This album would mark Tool's first release in six years, since 2006's 10,000 Days. You can watch the full video interview with Danny Carey at this location.

Could the end of the year mean Dec. 21 2012? Tool could probably write some epic apocalypse songs.

Wow this news is amazing. And Dany is such a cool, laid back and down to earth guy. Nice interview (even if it's not an MS one)

I wouldn't put it past them to release it on that date, with their sense of (humour?).

Hell yeah. Their fifth album has been on the back of my mind for a while, and it's nice to get an update about it. Tool is freaking good. I want to hear this.

Oh hell yeah I can - 10,000 Days is a pile of dog barf. Even Lateralus only has a small handful of decent songs. Either Tool started doing far too many drugs to make actual music versus noise, or I've stopped taking enough drugs to continue to find that kind of thing interesting.

When I read this, I had just woken up so I was still a bit sleepy, and I had to blink a few times to make sure what I was reading was true, and it was!

Awesome news!

Can't wait. I heard a while back that they would begin recording around May-ish. Seems the source was spot on.

Strongly disagree with you my fellow metalstormer. I love the post-metal influence on the album alot. I hope this is the new direction the band takes.
Stabby - 24.03.2012 at 04:51
Happy happy happy. They took so long that they definitely have something good, as always. Their quality control and commitment to consistency is astounding
Butters49 - 25.03.2012 at 04:01

Breakerr - 02.05.2012 at 18:40
Awesome news, I'm excited to read that :D:D:D:D cheers for good music
Dentura - 26.06.2012 at 08:12
That's awesome, I should definitely pick it up when it comes out, thank god I wasn't a Tool fan in 2006, the last time they released new material, because the anticipation would have pulverized me.
Omnicosm - 11.08.2012 at 14:42
It's still on track.
