Protest The Hero - Crowdfunding Their Next Album

Protest The Hero have finally released some news about the plans for a new album. Having completed all of their obligations to record labels, the band has started a campaign to raise money for the production of the new record. Protest The Hero expect to start recording in March or April and have a new album out in the summer.

Official announcement: "Dear friends, listeners, well-wishers, and soothsayers, the first of many announcements is upon us. It's one small step for band, and one giant leap for band-kind (not really). Today, we nervously begin our campaign to raise money for the production of our new record. We will no longer be accepting monetary advances from labels to fund albums. We now turn to our friends, family, and our fans to help us make this album. Please take a look at our campaign - then decide whether to throw us a couple bucks or a couple of middle fingers!"

Campaign short summary: "Can you believe that we've been a band for 13 years and counting? We've finally decided to take matters into our own hands and want to raise money for the album directly from the people who have helped keep this band going all these years. In this time, we've release 3 full length albums, a live DVD/CD, as well as an EP and a 7 inch. We've toured all over the world (but still wanting to check off more destinations and visit more places) and pretty much lived and breathed this band as long as we've been in existence.

We are finally free from all obligations and want to be in control of our 'careers'. In general, the record industry is backwards and we'd be stupid to renegotiate with anyone at this time. Crowdfunding seems to be something that's working. Whether or not this is the next thing for the music industry, it's a way that supporters of a band can know exactly where their hard earned dollars are going. No middlemen, no commissions, no bullshit."

What a weird thing to do.
Imagine lots of people pay the "Protest covers any song", they might end up with a covers album. Or the "Be heard on the new album", we'll have an album overloaded with guests . I'll probably just ask for a digipack.

I want that pizza party. But honestly, does it really cost that much to release an album?
Edit: Looked into it a bit more, seems like with all the studio time, different physical formats and promotion it may.

Ahah that pizza party is the best offer indeed I'm just happy to have new music from these guys.

I guess it pays off because they have practically raised all the money they wanted for this stage. I guess you don't need a label anymore, if you have enough fan-base.

Even though it might be ruined by people wanting to "be heard on the album" I think that this is a really bold move on their part. What they are doing is essentially the answer to a lot of people saying "I'll download the pirated album cause if I buy it then all the money goes to the label and not to the band". This actually could grow big enough to counter music being pirated if more bands would do it but it introduces a lot of financial hazards.

I love this idea. Fans get to put the money that they want towards the album, they get a broader scope of goods/services that they can put the money towards which leads to much more interesting band and fan interaction for those with the money. This is exactly what the music industry needs. Cut the middlemen who are gouging us all out alltogether. Sure, it's more work to do this independently and there's greater risk of unexpected costs to the band, but all-in-all I think this provides the best of both worlds to the band and the fans.

Really excited to see if this picks up amongst other bands as their contracts run out.

Also, for those of you that didn't notice the "be heard on the album" option is only open to 5 people. So I doubt it can really end up being that cluttered/ruined by providing that service to fans.

I just think it's amazing that they have raised over $165,000 in a little over a day. I'm sure it will slow some, but the total after 29 days should be pretty awesome.

Wow man, it's a good idea indeed and I'm happy that they raised all the money they wanted.

I'm also surprised at how fast they did it haha
