The burger of controversy... Swedish metallers Ghost B.C. have caused a bit of an uproar this time not with their music, videos or album covers but with a hamburger featured at a Chicago-based burger joint which names all of its specialty burgers after metal bands. The burger is considered sacrilegious.

What was supposed to be an average monthly special for Kuma's Corner, a heavy-metal-themed burger joint, has turned into more than the restaurant bargained for because they chose to garnish with a communion wafer. "The Ghost" burger, honoring the Swedish metal band of the same name, features a 10-ounce burger topped with a red wine reduction and an unconsecrated communion wafer.

"We didn't expect this reaction. Apparently, today, someone's coming out to do a rosary prayer over our restaurant," Luke Tobias said, the director of operations for Kuma's Corner. "We've done plenty of burgers named after fairly controversial bands in the past to seemingly no visible effect. It's based on a band, just like every other burger on our menu."

"Over the years, Kuma's has done a lot of things with their food that has pushed the envelope both in terms of what people consider good taste and, also, actual taste," a customer said. "Is there an aspect [of this one] that people might find offensive? Sure, if you don't have a sense of humor."

The Rev. Emily Mellott, rector of nearby Calvary Episcopal Church in Lombard, Ill., believes the burger crosses the line. "The root of this burger is a mockery of one of the most important symbols of the Christian faith," Mellott said. "If the owner of the restaurant were a member of my congregation, I'd tell him to withdraw the burger immediately."

Jeff Young, producer of the Catholic Foodie blog, thought the same. "It's not the Eucharist, but it's still symbolic," Young said. "For us as Catholics, the Eucharist is more than a symbol, it's a sacrament. At the same time, it doesn't mean that symbols aren't important. It is a mockery of something that is holy. The same thing could be said of the band itself."

People say the burger is tasty. For those about to eat this burger, bon appétit.

Nah, they would have bombed the place instead

Always the same story and probably will have the same outcome so who cares, nothing new.

And the burger looks nice, except for that red wine...

Forged Soul used to go there all the time, got me a t-shirt. Next time I'm in Chicago I'm hoping to eat there. Won't bother with the ghost burger, too many others more appealing on the menu. Probably the High On Fire or Lair Of The Minotaur.
