Mikael Åkerfeldt - Honored By SKAP Organization

Every year, the organization SKAP (Swedish composers and lyricists) delivers scholarships to Swedish musicians who they feel have contributed to Swedish music and culture. This year, Opeth's mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt was awarded an exclusive scholarship for his services to the Swedish and international music scene.

Mikael was presented with the scholarship and diploma at an intimate event in the south side of Stockholm on the 9th of December.

Mikael Åkerfeldt commented: "I'm quite honored to receive this. Apparently you can't apply for this scholarship, a board of legendary musicians decide that you're the right person for this award. I had never even heard of SKAP before they contacted me. I'm happy and surprised there's some focus on heavy Swedish music and genuinely chuffed that they focused in on me. Through time I've been handed some awards and whatnot, but this one resonates more in me personally. No glitz and glamour, just some appreciation for what we and I do musically. It's well appreciated!"

The Swedes are currently preparing the follow-up to Heritage and the plan is to release it next year.

I'm pretty sure they would have awarded BETTER MUSICIAN than Mikael.

No no, he's a great musician but if anything this award goes by I think Mikael doesn't deserved it. They're far better musicians than him. Its not only experience creeps in everytime, there is something we called musical talent and skills.

I know handful of Swedish musicians I think their contribution was far better and expansive than Mikael did. I don't know but I think artists like late Fred Åkerström(if they honour it) or Denize Lopez, even from ABBA, you know.

Look, i don't want to obliterate Mikael from his great talent but if they really do honour respected, skillful and talented musicians on podium like this I think Mikael have to make his way up there. Nothing against him.

Other than that, award ceremonies' are not few. Every country honour musicians, bro.

I was only kidding I'm sure there is a more suitable candidate for this award, but I doubt by anything more than marginally. I'm sure that up until this point they've already recognised all the obvious candidates. After all, this organisation has been around for quite a while...

Edit: I might be wrong about that last part, I can't seem to find any record of who's been awarded the scholarship...

Probably drugs.

Yeah, he looks like a meth-head to me. Explains Heritage.

Seriously though, when I saw Opeth about 2 years ago here in 013 (which was the last time I saw them btw) he was probably just as skinny. He probably decided not to be "fat" again, which he was a decade ago or so. That being said, he doesn't look bad apart from being skinny... though him using drugs would indeed explain Heritage. The upside is that they can't make an album worse than Heritage... right?

He simply has a small frame.

Nah, not at all. He has a pretty normal frame and is actually not short at all (I believe he's around 1,85 m). I've seen photos of him in which he was pretty "big", for example those photos of him performing with Bloodbath. He doesn't look skinny at all there. Have a look at this one for example: http://bloodbath.biz/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/mike.jpg

Who's Mikael Akerfeldt?

Isn't he the former frontman of Akercocke? If I'm not mistaken, they originally named the band after his penis.

You made me laugh.

What I meant by small frame was his shoulder width. He probably lost weight, and for the better Touring doesn't come with a very healthy lifestyle, which probably explains the Bloodbath photo. Since Opeth has gradually become more renowned, the band probably tours under better conditions and learned to cope. He's probably healthy and simply not muscular. What I'm saying might be indirectly related to what you said, but...whatever

At some points in the Lamentations DVD he even looks a bit on the chubby side. Note that I didn't say fat... but definitely a bit chubby.

I had never even heard of SKAP before it was mentioned in a news article on this website. I don't think they're exactly renowned.

Or maybe he is... honest?

Regarding his weight, I wouldn't be surprised if he did it to look more like a 70s rockstar.

But I liked Opeth since when they were almost an obscure sound in metal or at least that was what I thought about them, and now they're getting more and more in the eyes.

Scholarship ? does it mean that he's going to study music with SKAP ?

And isn't this award a kind of proof for his musical knowledge and to know musical theory as well ?

Yeah, sounds weird to give an scholarship to a guy that, probably, knows a lot in the first place to win a prize like this. In the specific case of Mikael though, he didn't have any musical formation, so it can be useful for him.
