In this case it's not a cliche. Abbath is one of the front faces within BM and virtually everyone knows him by his corpsepaint. So I don't see it as cliche but more as taking advantage in the image he built in the old days. It would be like Lemmy performing with just some jeans and a tshirt or Iron Maiden without Eddie. Not right.

For him to use this would be just ugly. I was stating my happiness caused by the fact that many new bands are not adopting this thing. It seems very true that many new BM bands do not go for corpse paint, and that makes me happy.

Be happy. I just beleive that it's wrong to use cliche in this case then we have to call every musician who uses his standard well-known look as cliche.

Maybe not cliche for him, but it is a cliche for younger generation of people to use it, and I think it is clear that I was commenting on the decline of the popularity of this thing within the whole metal sphere.

I like the song. I actually prefer a less-produced sound with Immortal (At The Heart Of Winter, etc.), so if Abbath is going that route production wise, I am intrigued.

Let's be honest. At this point, Immortal's war paint (Yes, they referred to it as such!) is as iconic among black metal fans as KISS's face paint was to their fans. Thus, it makes perfect sense to me that Abbath's new album should be graced with a cover such as this. Face it, the cover is perfect. It features the face of Abbath that all Immortal fans have come to recognize. Also, his expression is a perfect reflection of the music that he has been involved with since Demonaz's departure from Immortal: wrathful, yet introspective.

You may dismiss Immortal and their spinoffs as ridiculous. It's true, they are. However, it cannot be denied that there is an element of spirituality to their work, to which the ridiculousness contributes. They're not setting churches on fire to make a name for themselves. They've consistently created black metal that is fully aware of the tongue-in-cheek nature of the imagery yet embraces the scope and potential that the genre's musicianship is able to create.

It cannot be denied that black metal has seen a changing of the guard of late. Black metal in general has proven to be a genre that is malleable, and has evolved and progressed to maintain relevance that has been unattained by others, which come and go in popularity through revivals. Now, there are bands that wear hoodies and masks (Mgla, Svartidaudi, Thantifaxath). There are bands that sport flannel and casual wear (Panopticon, Krallice, Deafheaven). There are bands that maintain the hallowed black metal imagery of old (Watain, Nightbringer, Carach Angren, Horna). However, the originators should be respected, and I will continue to be enthused by the prospect of a new album by Immortal and its spinoffs much as I am enthused by the prospect of a new album by Kreator, Iron Maiden, or Triptykon.

TL;DR: Black Metal 4 Lyfe. Fuck haters.

I don't get why we are discussing corpse paint though. Abbath IS that guy with that particular "war paint", as he calls it. It's almost a trademark. Quite fitting, since the project is named "Abbath", to use his painted face on the cover. Look, there's even a crochet doll
