Metallica - Mixing New Album, Out This Year

Metallica are taking their sweet time with the follow-up to Death Magnetic (2008). Now almost eight years later, their new album is being finalized, currently in the mixing stages. In a recent interview with Humanity magazine, drummer Lars Ulrich confirmed that their 10th album is coming out this year (tentatively in the fall) and you can expect a more diverse record.

Regarding the new material, Lars said: "I don't know if I have that kind of perspective yet, but I can tell you that it's coming. Hopefully it'll be out in the fall, and it definitely sounds like Metallica. It's probably a little less frenetic than the last record. The last one Rick Rubin really encouraged us to for the first time be inspired by our past. It was the first time we sort of looked in the rearview mirror. This time around it's a little bit of a different thing. We're not working with Rick, we're working with the engineer from the last record, who's producing, Greg Fidelman. So there's some of the same production elements at play, but we're expanding a little bit on the sonics. It's probably a bit more of a diverse record than the last one. It's exciting, but I don't have quite the perspective yet."

You really did define the two sides of pendulum.

I want to be in a middle and see how the whole thing gonna work.

Please, with better production. DM was spoiled because of a horrible sound.

Agree. That's my only complain about DM (I consider it a very nice album).

I'll probably pick it up just to find out what it sounds like. So what if it's crap? Only wasted ten bucks. Still will make for an interesting 45-60 minutes of my life either way.

Honestly, this band stopped being "groundbreaking" in 1984, but they've put out some songs I really like (despite dogshit albums, mostly) such as, "My Friend of Misery," "Ronnie" (off Load), and "Judas Kiss," which was written by Kirk. Awesome little riff there!!

Too bad about the production, though. Best production they ever had was on "Garage Days Re-Re.." should have stuck to that garage for AJFA and maybe finished writing it. If the whole thing sounded like "The Prince" I think it would have been their best record. Would have, should have.

Oh well, still gonna probably shell out the ten bucks and buy the thing. Why not? \m/,

Worst case scenario - another Metallica album to ignore. I Can't get what all the fuss is about.

Anthrax, Megadeth and Testament have released good albums, however Metallica haven't put out a formidable album since '84, and every subsequent album has avoidable flaws, or has been truly dreadful. The first thing they should do is make sure that the album doesn't exceed 45 minutes, though, judging by their history, going all the way back to '86, it's like that this one will go on and on and on, and for 70 minutes. It's a joke!
