Devin Townsend - New Video For 'Stormbending'
Prog metal masters Devin Townsend have unleashed a new video for the standout track "Stormbending" of their new and freshly released Transcendence album. Devin Townsend are currently touring North America and will hit Europe early next year to promote it. Enjoy the official promo video!
Devin offered: "Stormbending was a song that meant a lot to me while writing and when asked to do a video, I really pushed for it. I think the idea of it was based around turning the tide of your own perspectives on things. It's very easy to get caught up in the negativity and fear that kind of pervades most things lately, and finding ways to fight that away and keep a strong outlook on your own life can be challenging. It's really easy to give in to it all as opposed to consciously working to better your situation. The video was done by a team of fantastic people in Serbia, and although it's a challenge to be included in one's own videos, we decided to do one that was more performance based and I think it turned out really quite well. Thanks to everyone involved for making this happen and thanks to you for listening and supporting if you do."
Also, the band has been uploading a series of videos documenting each day of their current North American tour, which can be watched on Devin's YouTube channel.

There is something in new Devin Townsend that make his music unenjoyable for me. I expected some "claws" like in "Poltergeist"/.

He always said he never wanted to be a big star (which was why he broke up SYL) but now that he is, it seems to have got to him and now he is totally comfortable being a huge (dare I say) mainstream success in metal. I personally went off Devin after Ki (though I loved Casualties) as his approach to making metal music changed considerably after he underwent his huge personal change in 2007. So many people have crucified me for saying that I prefer his music when he was batshit insane but music is music. His mental state is more important than music for sure, but as a musician I think his ability to express himself through *metal* music has become stale. I feel that he expresses himself more truly through soft music. To label his recent music 'progressive' I believe is a misnomer. There is little to no proper progressiveness in his past few albums. and the term is synonymous with djent nowadays. This is of course just my opinion

Written by Desert Father on 16.10.2016 at 06:15 FInally someone who agree with me. I wouldn't call his music progressive now. "Wall of sound" and some catchy harmonies is not everything. In terms of creativity he become a bit generic. You know what you can expect from him.

Written by Desert Father on 16.10.2016 at 06:15 Transcendance is without a doubt a progressive record. Plenty of polyrhythms, key and tempo shifts, and unexpected turns. Certainly it is not progressive in the sense that it isn't remarkably different from anything else he has done in the past, but in the literal sense it is progressive indeed. I couldn't say the same for Epicloud and Z2, both of which were far more straight forward.

The problem with polyrhythms, key shifts and tempo changes is that most bands are doing all those things nowadays. I don't call that 'progressive' personally because it's not contributing anything new to the genre.
