Moonspell - Releasing New Album In 2017

After filming a new DVD in Lisbon, Moonspell are ready to release a new album this year! The band is currently on pre-production with Jon Phipps at their home studios (Inferno) in Portugal and recently posted online some pictures of their daily work at the studio.

The album title will be 1755 and it's a quite surprising twist of events and direction for the band. Versing the Great Lisbon Earthquake (1755), the band has developed a lyrical concept that looks into the death and rebirth of Lisbon and how the disaster changed Religion, Politics and Philosophy in the whole of Europe. The surprise is that the album will be fully sung in Portuguese.

What was supposed to be just a 4-song bonus for the Lisboa Under The Spell DVD-Blu-ray (recorded last February in Lisbon with 4000 fans attending, to be released in 2018) evolved into a full length album that will be produced by Tue Madsen (Antfarm Studios, Denmark) who worked with the band in a few previous releases (Under Satanæ, Night Eternal, Alpha Noir / Omega White).

In the band's own words, Fernando (lead singer) explains: "We fell in love with the concept and made perfect sense to sing it in our national language, Portuguese. I guess we were just waiting for the right opportunity to work on such an album. Musically it will be heavier than Extinct. It will be earthshaking but also very detailed with orchestrations and percussion as we want people to relive the Lisbon of the 18th century. Singing it in Portuguese, allowed me to find a different expression as a vocalist and my job is to be the survivor of the Earthquake, roaming the ruins and telling you all about it."

The band will tour Latin America soon and also play several festivals in the Summer.

This has all the ingredients to be super epic. Let's just see if Moonspell can pull it off.

Singing in Portuguese about the Great Lisbon Earthquake which is very much a part of history and personally, I'm fascinated by it, should be amazing. Eagerly anticipating this!

Something along the lines of Within Temptation making an album in Dutch about the North Sea flood of 1953? :

I like Extinct very much. Not sure what to think of this one yet.

I don't know how the Portugese language will fit the music, but I'm excited for this. Extinct was a good record.

Yes, something like that! Musically, I also don't know what to expect but the subject is cool.

You've never heard their songs with Portuguese lyrics? The novelty here is that the whole album will be in Portuguese, but they have done a few songs before in Portuguese.

That's true, I've not really heard a lot of their songs with Portugese lyrics. But Fernando has that sort of charisma to his style of singing, I think he can pull it off

This piece of news made me want to listen to Extinct again and I still love it so much, yet I can hardly think of a whole album in Portuguese... I'm afraid it's going to kill the album's atmosphere in the end :/

Extinct was one of my favourite albums of 2015 so hopefully this one holds up. Don't know how / if the Portugese will fit the music like their previous records, but lets wait and see.

I actually have some of Fernando Ribeiro's poetry books. He's a good writer but writing poetry isn't the same as writing lyrics and he's obviously been doing that very well so...
