Mastodon - New Release On The Way

When Mastodon revealed they were working on a new album, which turned out to be Emperor Of Sand, they said they were working on a double album. In fact, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds said he had written one album himself, titled Cold Dark Place. That album is now being released by Mastodon and Hinds recently shared its cover art. So, it all points to it being a companion piece to Emperor Of Sand.

Amazon UK has listed the album with a release date on September 22nd via Reprise but the band has yet to announce that officially. So, stay tuned for more details about it, including whether it is a full-length or an EP.

Brent Hinds said previously about Cold Dark Place: "It's an album I wrote myself and recorded with Brann and Troy during the Once More 'Round The Sun sessions. It has to do with a nasty breakup that I went through. I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music."

Very cool artwork, excited to hear what it's like. Looking at the artwork and subject matter, this could turn out to be some heavy piece of work. Looking forward to it!

It seems odd that Bill wasn't involved at all with the album. Maybe he was and the article is just worded weirdly.

From what Hinds said in interviews, it's really a solo album, he wrote it. He didn't mention Bill at all though. But maybe he also worked on it in the recordings.

Again, this is still a bit mysterious and we need to know more.

Is Emperor of Sand worth a listen to? One too many people have told it was just a generic release. So i've been putting it off. This on the other hand looks much better.

No. It is a generic release.

So it's a solo album, but he is sticking Mastodon's name on it? Seems a bit dodgy to me.

"It's shaping up to be a double album," says the guitarist. "One is an album I wrote myself, and recorded with [drummer] Brann [Dailor] and [bassist/vocalist] Troy [Sanders] during the Once More Round the Sun sessions. My part is called Cold Dark Place, and it has to do with a nasty breakup that I went through. I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit. [laughs]
"The other guys are writing another album, which I haven't even heard yet so I can't tell you what it sounds like. But I'll come in to give some noodle-y leads here and there. And for sure I'll be recording with my new signature Flying V?while standing on top of a chair with a werewolf mask on. And that's not a joke; I really do that. I never sit down to record. You can't sit down and play a Flying V, everyone knows that." <http://www.guitarworld.com/electrics-artist-news-interviews/brent-hinds-talks-new-mastodon-album-epiphone-custom-flying-v/29356>

If Brent wrote and recorded all of the guitar parts then there isn't much left for Bill to do. If Troy and Brann are playing and singing, then it might as well be a Mastodon album.

They should have called it Pretty Stoner Hate Machine, though.

Yes, please listen to it and build your own opinion. The album gets more hate than it deserves. Even if its one of the weaker releases, it´s still good. Don´t jump on the bandwagon, listen to it yourself.

Well, can´t make them all happy. I found something enjoyable on every release they put out. And it´s not like they completely changed styles like e.g Opeth.
