Devin Townsend Project - Goes On Hiatus

Canadian musician and producer Devin Townsend has announced on Facebook that he has decided to take a break from Devin Townsend Project in order to focus on other projects. Read his full statement below.

Devin Townsend wrote: "Hey guys, Devin here. So after 8 years of touring with DTP, I've decided to take a break from this band and focus on a number of other projects I've been really wanting to do for some time now. The band have been there with me through thick and thin and we've shared some pretty great moments - I can't say enough good things about them - And in the future, I'm sure we'll work again.

"I have 4 new albums I am currently working on. I am currently in the finishing stages one of the grandest and most overwhelming projects that I have been fortunate to do. It's certainly my favourite DVD release of them all and is a powerful moment, if I can say so myself. Ocean Machine Live In Plovdiv (tentative name). Mixing the orchestras, choirs, the 'by-request' set and the full Ocean Machine album in that magnificent setting has been hugely rewarding. Seeing this spectacle come to life is a testament to this period of work and I can't wait for you to see and hear it.

"Life is short and I have a lot I need to say in some new and different avenues. I will certainly continue to play live in several new ways (starting next year) and I'm excited about some collaborative things that have also come up as well.

"I salute the band, the team, and the audience for allowing us to do what we have done and the patience to accommodate my persistent morphing. As someone who's music is connected to his personal growth, I feel an obligation to follow this muse wherever it leads. To not do so would be in direct opposition to what it is I have fundamentally done for all these years.

"Peace and respect,
Devin Townsend"

Ha, go figure. He releases the first DTP album ever that I've really liked, and then goes on hiatus. Of course.

I don't care. He's going to keep making Devin music, so I in no way care what band he decides that need to be. I will buy the fuck out of anything he puts out, name aside.

I don't think it'll happen, honestly.
But hey, who knows, he might have some anger to funnel out?

A hiatus that was really needed, the Devin Townsend Project formula was getting quite stale. I hope he will make some truly new stuff now.

Casualties of Cool was a great surprise so I am glad we get to see what more Devin has to offer outside the DTP style.

I like Devin to just do whatever the fuck he wants. That's when he's at his best.

I'm ok with this. Devin was never one to force anything for the sake of forcing. Obviously that lead to the end of SYL and some of his other projects. I can imagine all that touring he was doing would lead to burnout eventually. He does what he wants, when he wants, and that's the coolest thing about him as an artist.

I would feel bad about this, but since he is going to concentrate on other projects I feel more like anxious, I guess...

He did say that was the whole idea behind his last studio album title, 'Transcendence'. He said he was done with that sound and was going to move forward. Wish he would drop another 'Deconstruction'. I loved the guest vocalist/musicians concept from him, very Ayreon like! Cheers DT, and it was a BLAST to see in Red Rocks last year along with Gojira and Opeth!

Is a new Casualties Of Cool album one of the 4?

Was that a full-on studio album, or just DT releasing some 'in between' material kind of album?

I would say he churned out Z2 because so many of his fans wouldn't shut the fuck up about it, and quite honestly it's one of his worst in my opinion. Sky Blue was a lot more pleasant, although it was predictable and safe. Glad he's going on a break, just hoping he can come back with something stellar!

It was his country rock project with the singer he used on Ki.

He did mention in a post or interview somewhere that he'd be doing another Casualties album

I want a new Casualties album then! So, I'm not too worried about this as long as we keep getting good music from Devin.

Transcendence did feel like a closing of a chapter to start something new.

I'm so glad I got to see him perform with the project. I would've been devastated if I missed it.
If you ask me, he should record a smooth-jazz album - that would be bonkers!
