Dream Theater - Enter The Studio, Update On New Album

Recently, Dream Theater signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment via Inside Out Music for the release of their next album and now they are hard at work on new material. The progressive metallers have just entered their new recording studio for the next few weeks working on the new Dream Theater album and according to them, it's been "very productive" and it's sounding "heavy".

Singer James LaBrie and guitarist John Petrucci update from the studio:

I'm glad they're working on heavier stuff now, like they use to do back in the days of Train Of Thought or Systematic Chaos.

Same. One can dream right? Not getting my hopes up too much though.

Don't expect much, gone are the days when DT announced an album and I would get excited.

I wonder if the product will be as awful as the last three albums.

Breaks my heart how little I care about Dream Theater anymore. Fifteen years ago and in high school, they were my world just about. Petrucci is the only member I really am interested in hearing from anymore, and he's never gonna leave DT. Oh well. I can still spin Awake or Six Degrees any day and enjoy it thoroughly, and no new releases from them can change that.

Seriously they should fire James, Jordan and Mike. Get Portnoy and Derrick back and find a singer who can actually bring it live. I think Portnoy was right, they needed a break to recharge themselves.

Or they could just keep making albums and you could just not listen to them.

If they make one then I'll have to listen to it. I see that you are a big fan judging by the fact that they are the first on your list in your profile so it's hard for you to read comments as such.

I can't understand the hatred towards the releases they have done without Portnoy. IMHO A Dramatic Turn of Events was a REALLY GREAT album, drinking so nicely of the legacy made by I&W and Metropolis II. Homonymous album was nice still, with a GREAT epic one as it was Illumination Theory. And The Astonishing I liked it so much also (as it's the most melodic work made by them).

This band hasn't released something bad. The problem is the stuff they release nowadays just is not for the likes of some ones around here (and that doesn't mean their newest stuff is bad at all, just different at the OVERVALUED stuff from the first albums).

I still get excited about news like that (and I love so much their first albums)

Well, they were already stagnating with the last two albums with Portnoy.

I can't really seem to bring myself to care about new DT. Though I'll probably still check out the next one.

Well, no. You can just ignore it.

I respect their legacy, I have to give them a chance as a Prog fan. All I am saying is that I expect another mediocre album.

We'll see, surprises are happening all the time so it could turn out to be a decent album.

Now that's an interesting opinion, couldn't disagree more with the last part.

My biggest problem with the latest DT albums is that I simply dislike the sounds of Mangini's drums in DT's music. No doubt an exceptional drummer, but imo his less dynamic style of playing doesn't fit the music too well.

Will still check this new, heavier album out, not expecting fireworks though.
