Opeth - Working On New Songs

Opeth haven't said much about their new album so far but in a recent interview with FaceCulture, guitarist Fredrik Åkesson has revealed that the band is writing and demoing new music for their next album. Due out sometime in 2019, it will be the follow-up to 2016's Sorceress.

On the progress of the new album: "We're very much into the demoing. I've recorded a lot of solos so far. And Mikael (Åkerfeldt) has almost already written 12 songs for the new album, so we have more material than enough for an album. But I think we will at least try to finish 15 songs. So hopefully we'll work on song ideas very soon."

Regarding the release set for the first quarter of 2019: "I'm not sure if it's gonna happen, but we're working towards that, and the songwriting goes very well". "Mikael has been very productive these lastů since January, basically. We did the last touring for Sorceress in November."

In terms of the musical direction of the new material: "Compared to the last three albums, I would say, if I can reveal anything, this album is more complex, more energetic, and I think it's gonna be something."

"The first filter is the guys in the band, I would say, If we enjoy it, we can only hope that people that enjoy listening to Opeth will enjoy it; that would be nice. But if we're happy with it, we will release it; it's quite simple. I think this is kind of a Mikael question in a way, since he's the creative director for the band, so I know, speaking for him a little bit here, that he always tries to push everything into something new. And I think people will enjoy this new album."

If the album's good, I'm gonna like it. I really don't care about the style they go for.

I really liked Heritage and Pale Communion. Sorceress not so much. So, it's not easy to predict what comes next.

More elevator rock music? I'm starting to share the same enthusiasm for new Opeth as I do for new Cradle of Filth or Borgir. No thanks...

Not even the Opethian admires Opeth anymore... We are doomed

Can you do that on MS? Seriously though, it will stay as Opethian. They have gone down the shitter for me personally but it's my love for their early discography and all of the great moments that I had listening to Opeth and discovering new sounds that morphed me into a lifelong fan. I don't touch PC, to be honest, and both Heritage and Sorceress share the same amount of play time here and there. I created Opethian back in 2008 right when Watershed dropped. How I wish they evolved into a band that took their style and ideas to the next level, alas, they didn't.

Band lost me after Watershed.

Agreed. That was their last great album. I still can't get into anything they releases since Heritage. It's been a while since I gave that one and the others a listening... maybe, or maybe not.

Here to agree with all comments hailing Watershed as their last great album.

Not excited for this one - but it's Opeth, man - I HAVE to listen.

Nah, you don't. Heard the first single from each of their last two and didn't listen to anything else.

Hahaha... as sad as it is to say; you're right.

I don't even think I listened to their last album in full. I put it on while I was folding laundry one day and never felt like listening to it again... but I still listen to their pre-Heritage shit all the time.

In the case of Opeth, I feel that they threw the baby out with the bathwater when they eliminated the death metal aspect of their sound. They're still talented at writing music by my standards, but they no longer write anything that draws me back for more. I miss the complexity and variance from their old stuff (cliche; I know).
