Avantasia - An Update From Tobias Sammet

Avantasia's mastermind Tobias Sammet have checked in with a statement regarding of the current situation with both bands he's involved in - Avantasia and Edguy. His full statement can be read down under.

Statement from Tobias: Friends, some of you have been wondering about Edguy recently, and what I am up to next, when a new Avantasia album is due etc. Well, who knows what's gonna happen exactly these days and forthcoming months. First priority for all of us should be to be healthy and safe. That's all that counts right now!

"But you asked a couple of things, and I feel I have the time right now to set a few things straight: I have been working on a new Avantasia record for a while now, and not on a new Edguy record because that's what feels right to me. It's a compliment, whenever I write an album for Edguy people ask for Avantasia and vice versa. But as an artist you have a feeling about what you want to, what you're driven to do next, that inner longing is your fuel and drive, and anyone who has recently written a couple of heartfelt albums will agree with me. Ideas have to be done a certain way, and in my case if there wasn't Avantasia, I'd have to invent it.

"Sascha and I have started working on great ideas some time ago, and for me in art there is my way or no way, and I owe you and me that honest self determination. Edguy has been on hiatus for a while as you all realized. Yes, it's been a while since we were out, and nothing is in the pipeline currently but we're all doing our own stuff, at least up until this mean virus stopped big parts of everyday life all over the world.

"The situation is, Space Police was a great album, but it felt extremely exhausting to put together and make it the great album that I was satisfied with. It's not unusual I assume, nearly 3 decades in a band, when you deliver like a clockwork, bands should be granted to run out of mutual agreement and then take a break as opposed to delivering something for the sake of putting their logo on something.

"Besides, I can't split myself in two. Edguy has always been my love, and in early 1999 I started my second love - Avantasia. You know, I also have ideas for a solo project I so desperately would love to do, but I don't wanna get lost in too many things at once. Besides, being 42, having written 18 albums, being a family father and a prisoner in isolation (currently, no fishing for sympathy here, we all are 😎) - I just don't want to continue to deliver like a machine according to expectations. It's impossible.

"So, when is the new Avantasia album ready? I have no idea! Who knows what the future holds, I will continue to work on my stuff and then see what comes out, and when.

"I wish you all strength and hope and light in these troubled times, I am fully aware there are more important things in life than the question about which of his two bands a musician is going to release an album with. It's completely unimportant in the big picture, looking at what the world is going through right now, so let's not take little things too seriously. But you asked and I wanted to answer instead of reading and responding to individual comments. It's easier that way."

Didn't Avantasia just put out a new album last year? Seems a bit weird to be saying "I have been working on a new Avantasia record for a while now" so soon after a release from that project, unless he generally means he's been working on Avantasia material rather than Edguy material for the last few years

Seems like he have a easier time to write Avantasia stuff rather than Edguy. He got more musical freedom in Avantasia for sure, he can do anything with that band really, rock/metal/folk/symphonic/pop elements and so on.
But I really miss Edguy these days, haven't seen them in years live..

Would imagine that Avantasia would attract bigger live audiences than Edguy. Seeing as that is where the money is, not surprised. Edit.. well maybe next year.

As Tobi moves closer and closer to Meatloaf he can do what he likes in his own band. I get the feeling he has fallen out with the other members of Edguy anyway.

Just get the old CDs out and listen to Hellfire Club and earlier. That was the last decent power metal album he was anywhere near.

I like Avantasia but Tobias has been essentially copying The Scarecrow for the last 12 years. I think he has improved on the formula for some albums, and I still enjoy listening to them, but its largely the same style. Would love to see him go back to his roots or at least try something a bit different. If he doesn't though, Eh, whatever, i'll still listen to it.

He can write good songs, but Tobias himself is a very average singer. I love Avantasia, but I'll always prefer Edguy for their catchy and somehwat comedic song styles. Though I always thought they haven't been as good since Superheroes.

He used to be a great singer in the earlier days. Sounded a bit like Bruce Dickinson on albums like The Savage Poetry. Unfortunately from Rocket Ride onwards he decided he was Jon Bon Jovi.

haha, agree...i had a same feeling. ..also, I think one of the reasons for that change was his singing style, and the fatigue of his voice during tours. In the earlier days he did perform better, during long years of turing he abused his vocal chords on some level. If you listen close, he used to sing usually from his throat, did lots of screems, etc. I think he abused it. I've seen plenty of live shows end of 2004 era, when he performed quite poorly.. moreover, a lot of the sogs were(are) tuned down to "D" note during live shows, for him to be able to sing them...From superheroes onwards he started singing more form his chest voice, allowing him to "save" and "maintain" he's voice.... however, i still enjoy quite a lot of his songs. Be that Edguy or Avantasia.

Most of all, please write decent stuff or don't write anything. At least the old songs might grow on us. Last Edguy album was pretty good, mainly compared to the previous 2. Last Avantasia was shite but has some good moments.

If you like la-la-la, Somerville/Kiske and stuff, there's nothing wrong with that. But Avantasia should finish after first two albums.

I originally skim read this as "arrested for illegally disembowelling his father" - I was thinking "there's a legal way to disembowel someone?" Upon my second look it all made more sense
