Morbid Angel - Earache Records Releasing 'Altars Of Madness' Ultimate Edition

On May 29th, Earache Records is releasing the Altars Of Madness ultimate edition from legendary Florida death metallers Morbid Angel. This essential reissue features not only the original classic album, but a second disc of 'JuvenilIa Live At Rock City' (November, 1989) during the the Grindcrusher tour with Napalm Death. Altars Of Madness has been recreated using full dynamic range mastering, pressed from the original master tapes giving the listener a more aggressive and dynamic audio experience.

This Ultimate Edition digipak includes new 2020 artwork, as well as the fan favourite CD bonus track "Lord of All Fevers & Plague" in full dynamic range for the very first time. The release also marks the very first time that the blistering live set has ever been available on CD. Available for pre-order at this location.

Earache already released many classic albums with full dynamic range, but besides them being (generally) quieter, I can't tell any difference.

Dynamic range is the difference between the loudest and quietest parts in terms of volume. You might find the overall perceived volume to be lower, but in a good listening environment these versions are way more detailed. And yes, for some people that will also mean that in order to hear the small (quiet) details you will have to turn up the volume more. These are probably the closest versions we'll ever get to what was actually committed to the master tape originally.

I know what dynamic range means. I can see by their waveform that they're less compressed, but I open an audio editor, pair up the 2 versions, normalize them, do an A/B test while they're playing, and unless my headphones suck, there's no noticeable difference to me.

Depth is not always noticeable unless you've been training your ears, also the high end (above 10kHz) is a tough cookie to discern even for seasoned audio engineers. Do a nulltest between the two. If the nulltest produces no audio then either you have the full-range version twice or we've been bamboozled....
