Judas Priest - Writing New Album

Judas Priest members Rob Halford (vocals), Scott Travis (drums) and Richie Faulkner (guitar) recently gave Metal Hammer magazine an update on the follow-up to 2018's Firepower. It will once again be produced by Andy Sneap, who also filled in for longtime guitarist Glenn Tipton on the accompanying tour for Firepower, as the latter was forced to retire from touring due to his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease. However, Tipton has been involved with the songwriting process for the new record.

Halford said: "We started the year prepping the next Judas Priest metal masterpiece. We had one massive writing session together and we've got an enormous amount of material stacked up, which is really thrilling after the glorious response we had to Firepower."

Travis added: "It's gonna be good. Rob's always excited about new music, which is great, because he's such a creative guy and when you are that creative, naturally you never rest on your laurels. You always want to do something new and get it out there."

Faulkner also gave furthermore details about the songwriting process: "We compile all our ideas and get together and throw them in the pot and see what sticks, then see what lights up the room, see what Rob grabs hold of. It might be a riff that Rob really gets his teeth into that inspires a lyric or an intro, verse or chorus and suddenly you've got the nucleus of a song."

Firepower is an insanely good Judas Priest album, listened to it the other day and it really is a top tier album. Fingers crossed that the new one can continue with the same quality!

Firepower was an excellent Priest album. In my top 5 no doubt. If this is close I'll be thoroughly pleased!

Kind of lost interest to them after Nostradamus and Redeemer Of Souls but I might check this out when it arrives -- and the previous one too, which has remained unlistened so far. Can't really say my expectations being really high though.

Are you serious? You haven't listened to Firepower? You are in for a very pleasant surprise, it's the follow-up to Painkiller that came 28 years late.

I guess I'm going to listen it at some point, just that after a streak of weak albums it didn't feel worthwhile anymore unlike with their older albums. And all the K.K Downing vs Judas Priest drama didn't help either.
