Highly anticipated? Good joke. Caught me off-guard. Nothing is anticipating about a band of has-beens that have not released a good tune in over 25 years. And the fact that they incorporated Souza back again to shit more bricks with his vocals is even more ridiculous. Getting this guy in the band back in the 90s was a really boneheaded management move and his vocals, the primary reason why Exodus never got the respect it deserved, although many won't admit it. Blood In, Blood Out, I'm out.

Maybe not highly anticipated but still something a lot of people, myself included, look at least forward to listening.
Exodus not respected?! I disagree, yours is the first bashing they got that I've read. Even the albums with that Rob Dukes vocalist did not get such negativity.

You dislike them, good, but don't ruin it for the rest of us.

Agreed. Bringing Souza back was probably the best thing Holt ever did. Souza has been a powerhouse in harsh vocals since "Tempo of the Damned." Amongst with Tenet, DDP, his own Hatriot. It breathed new life into Exodus. And he sounds way better live than Dukes.

Well I'm not very much looking forward to this. One interesting question is however: can it outsuck new Heathen?

"outsuck" - nice word invention.
The new Heathen did not suck if you ask me, so there you go....

I can't wait for this. Zetro is perfect for Exodus. If you disagree, you are not a fan of Gary Holt and Exodus.

I don't dislike them. Their debut is a classic thrash album. The sophomore is also great, but not because of Souza. That one was made with the previous vocalist in mind and it is clear that Souza is far more restrained on it than he would be on the 3rd album. The third album was also not bad, but hampered by his vocals. Their much hated 5th album is also much better than 4th (unpopular opinion, but it is what it is) partly because Souza's screeching is more restrained.

And yes, Exodus never really got the respect it deserved because of Souza. This manifested both in sales and in overall audience. The modicum of respect it got remains thanks to their debut album, which remains their best effort. Souza's vocals were simply a put-off for many thrash fans. Same can be said about Overkill's vocalist. That sort of vocal screeching, brick shitting can appeal to the fans of the Brian Johnson school of vocalizing, but that works for hard rock or glam. Not really for thrash. Vocals matter. Even a guy as uni dimensional as Araya received more respect and appreciation than Exodus and Souza did. Despite his vocals being sub-par and detrimental to the band overall as they could not experiment at all (unlike Testament with Chuck), his vocals were not annoying to listen to.

The albums with Rob Dukes were hyped before the release, but how many people remember them by now? Almost no one. Everyone that wants to hear Exodus wants to hear the first 3 albums essentially. With Bonded By Blood being in high demand today as much as it was in the mid 80s. I don't remember even a song from the Rob Dukes albums. Despite the fact I owned them albums. The hype surrounding those albums was not due to them being of high quality. But because Exodus released them. Same with Metallica. There is some sort of irrational hope that they will finally release a good effort after 30+ years of failures. That won't happen. You can count on your fingers bands and artists that got their act together after a long period of hopeless efforts.

Then again, people today have very low standards. If any standard at all. Anybody hoping thrash will experience a revival is an idealist. A revival in quantity? Maybe. A revival in quality? Not a chance. One is content to appreciate nostalgia. Nostalgia for me means nothing. Just because I long for that 80s thrash songwriting that doesn't mean I am content with lowering my expectations.

Old Heathen sucked for the most part. New Heathen is even more derivative. Heathen was more like a C-tire band even during the hey day of thrash. Some talented musicians, mostly as hired guns, but 0 songwriting talent.

Not bad, but mediocre. Heathen were a band of good instrument players. But had no idea how to write good songs and how to arrange them. That is why they were at best a C-tire band even in the hev-day of thrash, not to mention today. They hid their dilettantism behind wankery, which did not really work back when fans had some standards but works perfectly today.

not much difference between mediocre and bad.
