Mastodon - New Record In Mixing Phase

In the recent interview with 'Talking Metal' podcast, Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher revealed that they have just finished up recording a 15-song studio album and are currently halfway through the mixing process. Production and mixing have been entrusted to Canadian producer David Bottrill (Muse, Dream Theater, Tool, King Crimson). New record tentative release: September/October.

It would be interesting to see if it's still a 15-song album by release date, that would be a lot by Mastodon standards; I can only assume a few will be chopped/turned into bonus tracks

Can't say I've gotten much replay value out of Emperor Of Sand, but I really liked Cold Dark Place, so hopefully Brent's has more writing contributions on this album

Not happy to hear that there will be 15 songs. That just implies to me that it'll be even more trivial than most of the songs from Emperor Of Sand.

The lesser the tracks, the better. 15 is not cool to me

15 tracks is extremely concerning. Really makes you expect diluted pop tunes and very little depth. We shall see.

I don't get the panic. All 15 songs probably won't make it to the album, as Mastodon always record some extra songs that later become bonus tracks or end up on a compilation. Even if they did, 15 songs isn't that much more than their usual 10-12 songs.
I'm excited regardless of the quantity of tracks. There isn't really a Mastodon album that I dislike, though some songs are stinkers. I even like (most of) Emperor Of Sand and got a lot of replay value out of it, especially the last bunch of tracks.

I understand the concern with the 15 songs, however, that just leaves us in a "we'll see" state. I just hope it sounds less like a psychedelic Foo Fighters album (as with Emperor of Sand).
