A blog has been created to support Hellfest, following the smear campaign orchestrated by Catholic fundamentalists. Here's the translation of their opening post:

"Please note that following an increase in attacks by the CNI, UMP, UNI and Catholic fundamentalists, the festival of extreme rock music "Hellfest" is in danger.

Indeed, these organizations oppose the communities' financial support (Regional Council, General Council, Municipality) toward Hellfest (which represents only 2% of total budget).

A minority of conservative activists organized a campaign amalgam (desecration = metal = Satanism) to these communities and private partners (Coca Cola and Kronenbourg).

Thousands of messages were sent to both public and private partners.
The result was swift: Coca Cola disengaged from Hellfest, and the "Ouest France" newspaper reduces its editorial line concerning Hellfest.

A blog was set up to try to stop this smear campaign.

http://prohellfest.wordpress.com

You'll find the various support actions under way for which your participation is more than required.

Best regards,
Hellfest Freedom Committee"

Well, it's all in French, but the actions they propose right now are to do some lobbying, as the fundamentalists did. You'll find letter models to send to Cola-Cola, Ouest-France and Kronenbourg (the beers, note that they still support Hellfest) and also to the Clisson Town Council, departemental and regional councils, with the links on the same page http://prohellfest.wordpress.com/actions-pour-le-festival/operation-de-soutie/.

Bloody hell, why can't they just let people be? Yes, it's different from what you believe but why not just, you know, IGNORE it? What happened to "turn the other cheek".

Their accusations are unfounded and, quite frankly, a bit late. They're what, 3 or 4 years too late?

How come ? I thought France was beyond this stage...
Ask the shops and the merchats of Clisson and see if they hate Hellfest Maybe they could help ? (rather naive I know)

Catholic French need someone like Varg Vikernes to burn their churches, don't they?

Sure they're quite happy to see the metalheads coming, as the money flows and all this in good spirits
And as for "I thought France was beyond this stage..." you have to know that Clisson is at the limit between two of the most devout/bigot areas in France, so.... Somewhere else in France, like in Toulouse I think, this religious problem wouldn't have been so important

Hell no!
A church was burnt in 2006 by some Brittany black metallers, with quotes of Deicide written on the burnt walls. What happend next? Hellfest cancelled Deicide appearance, and Deicide condemned both the burning and Hellfest.

Yes, I've already heard of it and I'll do my best to support that festival. Unfortunately, I have not been able to go there even though I live quite near. And I sometimes feel ashamed to be French.. I mean, I have never heard of anti-Wacken or anti-Graspop or whatever "movements"..
Let's hope people will finally learn to open their minds.. I mean, I understand that people can feel "disturbed" by some messages but then they stick to these stereotypes and imagine that 60.000 Satan-worshipers went to that festival.. Quite lame, uh?.. *sigh*
Black Conundrum - 09.07.2009 at 22:12
This is pathetic. Metal is not Satanic by default! Just because a few metal bands glorify Satanism or Anti-Christianity doesn't mean that metal as a whole is Satanic. A vast majority of metal bands do not implement Satanic/Anti-Christian imagery or lyrics to their music. Whoever these Catholics are that are encouraging and spreading this smear campaign, STOP IT! Last time I checked, talking behind people's backs was a sin. The Hellfest employees and concertgoers don't deserve to be spat upon like this. Metal is not a Satanic observance. I'm getting sick of these morons calling themselves high and mighty and getting religion involved for their own self-centered advantages with their opinion as to why they think it's a FACT that metal sucks. If people would actually study metal more, they would find no shortage at all of metal bands that are not Satanic or Anti-Christian in any way. Heck, they'd even find Christian metal bands.

Edit: By the way, this message came from myself, a Christian (not a Catholic, however).

Fucking catholics, they should pick up a hobby instead of recreationally knocking Hellfest
routa - 10.07.2009 at 15:14
So that's why I couldn't find coke in the area. Damn Catholics ruining my hangover.

Another piece of news which links to this:

http://www.palibandaily.com/2009/07/09/ireland-makes-blasphemy-illegal/

Today marks the death of Irish extreme metal, as the government decided to revert Ireland back to the dark ages and make Blasphemy illegal.

I've never heard anything more stupid in my life.
Introspekrieg - 11.07.2009 at 00:57
They need the community to donate money to their donation plates instead so they can hire legal aide for their pedophile priests.

Well the festival is going to have to move in a couple of years anyway, as a school is planned to be built on the site where the festival is.

I was told this by someone... either that or I dreamt it.

It will have to move, that's sure. But that doesn't solve the problem as it will (hopefully for Ben & the orga) in the same area

Too bad french church are made in stone ;-) but are part of the architectural treasury, it would be a shame to destroy them.
