Heavy Metal 101 ought to include due tribute to Ronnie James Dio, the godfather of metal vocals. This man brought all the theatrics and flair and enthusiasm to the metal world, and helped crystalize the basic elements of metal. Similarly, while Ritchie Blackmore certainly owes more of his guitar playing to the blues than he does to shredding, his songwriting and insurmountable skills of riff-crafting provided invaluable direction to guitarists everywhere looking for something fresh and killer to play.
Aside from the obvious anthem "Man on the Silver Mountain," Rainbow gave us gems like the proto-power-metal epic "Stargazer" and more songs than would be useful for me to list.
With MS3 just kicking off, I'd like to open a place to discuss and pay homage to one of the cornerstones of the development of heavy metal. In the middle of a bunch of amazing contemporary bands, it's often a good idea to take a turn back into the CD catalogue of history to pull out some seminal moments that guided the development of the genre to its current place. Any melodic metalhead needs to know a little Rainbow... these guys were just the top shelf when it came to super-solid songwriting, great riffs, inspiring solos, and clever musical concepts.
"Rainbow" might not sound as metal as "Carcass" or "Dragonforce", but nobody can give them crap for anything they ever managed in their career. Even after the departure of the almighty Ronnie James Dio, they produced some killer music ("I Surrender" being a favorite of mine).
Yeah, Rainbow definately had a great impact on Power metal. I think the first true power metal song, was by Rainbow. 16th Century Greensleeves, off of the first album, had all the traits of a good power metal song.
And about Ritchie.... Ritchie wanted to change his sound, and not keep it the same. Ronnie didn't like that much, he left. Ritchie, at that point in time, wanted a more commercial sound, to Rainbow. And frankly, he could've done whatever he felt like. It was his band, afterall.

Kind of ironic when you look at it, he wanted a more commercial sound, yet I dont know of anyone who actually liked the post-Dio era Rainbow. It seems like they did get some commercial success with those albums strangely enough.

I am actually someone who likes the post-Dio albums. ALthough they aren't as good as the one with Dio they are still immensely enjoyable. But slicker and less epic, yes, more commercial.

As far as influence goes, I think this band did a lot of stuff first. The power beat with double bass that I love so much (Kill The King, Light In The Black). Always a winner.
its funny to watch Cozy Powell playing with Rainbow and you see not only modern style metal drum solos but the fashion that would be adopted by black and thrash metal much later on (studded armbands, nothing but black) lol
not that fashion matters..
anyway love this band.

Haha, hell ya dude, Cozy was the shit, before he died. God, he was such an amazing drummer. I litterally can't find words to describe him. He did so much for the drumming world, and yet, he really doesn't get much credit for it. R.I.P. Cozy.
Ritchie Blackmore is a fuckin' genius.. i don't care he's almost as big an ego-maniac as Malmsteen himself, but that guy has an ear for melody like no other man, so many unforgettable riffs, classic solo's, this guy is a monster.
Rainbow is what my friends and i listen to the morning after a ridiculous night of drinking, namely "Catch the Rainbow" and "Temple of the King". absolutely classics that should be universally enjoyable by all fans of music. i approve of rainbow.

yeah man, the intro for "Stargazer" sounds almost as brutal as "Painkiller" on the drums.

if that intro had been produced in priest's sound in Painkiller, the only thing that would make it sound outta place is how short it is haahhah

To express my opinion with modesty... I think Rainbow should be in the Rock forum, not here...

In that case Anathema shood be in general music forum not in any metal forums
Anathema cannot be compared to Rainbow for many reasons. And yes, Anathema should be in metal forums even if they would be honouris causa their doom/death past. But this thread is about Rainbow... Anyway!

Blackmore had several styles which might explain it. Between Purple w/Gillain Purple w/Coverdale Rainbow w/Dio and Rainbow w/Turner several styles are played here. Speed rock with a few tunes from "In rock" classical influences and a pure prog tune from him on the song Stargazer

I swear by my life and love for it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor shall I ask another to live for me.
I found it weird how they inspired power metal.......I would've never guessed, they sound nothing like it.
Maybe explain more?
Because Raibow inspireted more epic metal and heavy metal
Oh, well what you say would make more sense......
But for Rainbow to inspire the standard Euro-Power metal (as I hear they did), it's weird to me, because lyrically and musically I cannot see them as Power Metal.

Well, I guess the early 80s was a time in which metal was inspired by metal, simple as that... the division between the sub-genres wasn't something that important at the beginning. As one of the most important original heavy metal bands, we can say that Raibow influenced every single sub-sub-sub-genre we know today.
I don't usually like the 70s sound, poor production etc, but Rainbow sounded as good as anything that Dio/Sabbath has done since. Rainbow Rising has got to be one of the best metal albums of anytime. For people who state RJD as an inspiration, Stargazer usually comes top.
After RJD left, for me the group had no attraction, gone was the epicness and Ritchie become stagnated in commercialism.
I would say RB Rainbow is bestter how others its more 70's ballad type, more soft even good for non metalheads but after RJD left band, Rainbow becaim like band whit no soul, summer whit no sun, wahtever, totaly future bulshit lyrics and music like dunno, never liked Rainbow after RJD left even I have all albums

Rainbow was the most modern sounding metal band of the 70's, with many songs with power metal stile lyrics and the production being great. Ronnie James Dio along with Rob Halford are the two most influentiel metal singers in metal from the 70's. Plus this band is probably the third most influentiel metal band of the 70's after Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. This band is the father of Power metal, and they even have a bit of a prog metal sound at times.
