Snuff tabacco is the oldest form of tabacco consumption known to humanity, when it was first introduced to europe a couple of hundreds of years ago it was first not used for pleasure, but rather to cure all sorts of small things, be it a blocked or running nose, nausea, headaches, etc
it soon became a symbol of status to have a snuffbox in ones home, napoleon bonaparte himself even had an entire room filled with different types of snuff, with different ages, different smells, etc, in every single castle he had.

enough of the history lesson, snuff tabacco is pretty much one of the awesomest things ever in my opinion, for those who dont really know what it is, it's a type of tabacco powder that you sniff into your nostril(s), either from the back of your hand in small heaps, usually two (i personally prefer four heaps though) or in lines from the arm or some surface. what it does is this, it's basically a nicotine shot that shoots straight into your head and gives you a nicotine-flash which lasts for a couple of minutes, depending on how good your body reacts to the nicotine, during this time your thinking capacity is usually a bit limited (simialar to being drunk) and most people just feel allround good (thats what nicotine does after all, it makes your happy hormones flow faster)

my favourite brand is Wilsons Of Sharrow, extra strong menthol, thanks again to Hanna for sending it over from england, i also snuff McChrystals menthol (simialar to wilsons, but greatly inferior) and an apricot snuff which leavs a very nice fresh smell for the rest of the day

apart from feeling good it's great fun with friends, specially when already (half)drunk and it's nowhere near as unhealthy as cigarettes! you don't cancer from it, seen how nothing is being burnt, and it isn't addictive, as long as you dont take huge amounts like ten a day or so

i dont know if it's very well known in the rest of the world, as far as i know in most countries people pretty much forgot about it's existence, but it's coming up again in switzerland, austria and (southern) parts of germany

Gletscherprise? If I remember correctly that's that extremely weak nonsense you don't even feel while snuffing
The best I've had so far was an English one, Wilsons of Sharow extra menthol. Pretty strong but with an excellent aroma, ages really well too

"Nonsense", you say, sir?! I throw down the gauntlet! I can certainly "feel" Gletscherprise.. A few big pinches would probably be good for helping to clear a blocked up nose! But to be fair Bas, you seem to have more experience than me, and have perhaps had rather more potent and kickin' snuffs that leave it in the cold!

I haven't tried Wilsons of Sharrow yet but have heard positive things about it. I'm currently 'doing' Samuel Gawith raspberry, which I've always found pleasant.

I wouldn't know, I did use quite a lot of snuff for a while and did try a couple different ones during that time, but that's long ago.
Nowadays it's pretty rare that I have a snuff with a couple of friends but it's still nice every now and then

Never heard of Samuel Gawith, though you should try Wilsons, it might be a bit strong for your taste, but it's a really good one

I will probably give Wilsons a go. I do like some strong and dryer snuffs once I become accustomed to them. I think the town's tobbaconist specialist has some Wilsons, and that's where I generally go to buy it. The snuff there has always been kept under the counter, rather than visibly on display, which makes it seem naughty, like you're asking for hardcore porn or something! Strange really, as many shops have a vast selection of cigarettes and cigars that are openly displayed.. although even that is apparently going to change in the near future http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20110309/tuk-cigarette-displays-in-shops-to-be-ba-45dbed5.html

That changed a while ago over here (at least in my province, not sure about the rest of Canada or the States for that matter).

It's a matter of advertising or something, I didn't really pay much attention as it doesn't effect me, but I guess you're not allowed influencing people to purchase tobacco and/or tobacco-related products; things like lighters are fine as they aren't designed for the sole purpose of lighting a cigarette or cigar.

which of course is totally hypocritical since alcohol advertisements and open displays are allowed as are advertisements and displays of cars and fuel, talk about things that are bad for your and other people's health.

Let's not forget that you live in a country famous for having prostitutes on open display! Not that I have any problems with it, I just found it worth mentioning when a Dutchie says something about open display and advertising

And having them on display certainly doesn't make me wanna go visit them, on the contrary

Hedges L260 The Snuff is a new favourite for me. It's based on a recipe invented by an English chemist (Hedges himself) in the 1800's, and has been used fairly widely ever since. This must be the ultimate menthol snuff, it's very strong indeed on the menthol, like a blast of icy wind!

Actually Poschl's Alpina is my favourite, with Lowen-Prise (anise and menthol).
