probally the youngest metal genre now, very underground in the early 90ties but starts to grow fast now mostly thanks to the finnish folk metal bands we all know:
Finntroll
Moonsorrow
Ensiferum
Korpiklaani
Turisas

but I want to know how many people here actually know of folk metal and what they think of it.

list of various folk metal:

Celtic folk metal:
Cruachan
Waylander
Runecaster
Eluveitie
Skyclad
Mael Mórdha

German folk metal:
Equilibrium
Saltatio Mortis
Falkenbach(Icelandic?)
In Extremo
Odroerir
Cumulo Nimbus
Adorned Brood
haggard

Nordic folk metal:
Svartsot
old Vintersorg
Otyg
Asmegin
Lumsk
old Ulver
Glittertind
Myrkgrav
Folkearth
Yggdrasil
Wuthering Heights
Heorot
Kivimetsän Druidi
The Mist and the Morning Dew
Shaman(pre-Korpiklaani)

Eastern Europe Folk metal:
Arkona
Avven
Chur
Munruthel
Butterfly Temple
Metsatöll
Alkonost
Dalriada
Shambless

I agree what K7 said people from their own country should use there own herritage, not copycat the the other. it is no problem if you use celtic instruments or other folk instruments for your music but to copy the whole imagery around it is an other thing. take for example the band Skilltron from Argentina, they don't sing about inca or that stuff but about scottish tales and even dress like them.....

to the one that said who was looking for african metal, no there isn't any just like there isn't any:
Chinese/Japanese Folk metal
Pirate Folk Metal
Indian Folk Metal
Egyptian Folk Metal
Inca Folk Metal

The Folk metal scene needs more balance, there are more deep folk metal bands but unfortunally the most of them come from East Europe and there they don't get as easy an big label like the Finns do.

Funny you say people should use their own heritage and then call for "Chinese/Japanese" (etc) folk metal. I wouldn't say metal itself is acultural, it's tied to a certain heritage to a certain extent just as regional folk music is.

This topic should be merged with this one in some way. I really like the "Medieval Metal" and "Celtic Metal" genres (In Extremo, Mägo De Oz, Eluveitie and so on) but I would never call Dalriada a Slavic Metal band, actually. Although the origins of Hungarians are located in North Asia (among the Erzya and such peoples who nowadays live in Russia), and their language and culture are Uralic, not Indo-European, their music is closer to Celtic Metal than to other Folk Metal genres.

I would like to introduce you to Cyhiriaeth, the creators of Iberian Pagan Metal! They are from my hometown (Madrid) and their lyrical themes are about ancient Iberian (pre-Roman) mythology. Their music, however, is similar to standard Pagan Black Metal. Actually, Cyhiriaeth is one of the only two Black Metal bands that I enjoy (the other one being Anorexia Nervosa).

Couldn't have said it better myself. There is pirate folk metal, try that cheesy novelty band Alestorm, or Verbal Deception (fairly decent prog/death/pirate folk from my city). But I agree, it kind of pisses me off when I see north americans writing viking folk even though there a bunch of people with french/british descent, kind of laughable. If by indian you mean Native north american/aboriginal then check out Tomahawk, there more of just avantgarde type stuff, but the new album is almost entirely aboriginal songs, I hope someone does this but in a more metal direction, that would be amazing, there is enough ancient culture in north america, I dont see why we have to be ripping off someone elses. If by Indian you mean India, I guess th closest thing would be Melechesh.

I don't see Alestorm as folk but more a running wild meets children of bodom, I already knew them when they were first called Batlleheart and they haven't changed that much they still suck and are an other mindless product for the dumb power metal masses. Verbal Deception also isn't folk htey are like Suidakra most people label them folk but they are in fact just melodic death with just a hint of folk in there music. I already found a viking folk metal band from Vietnam..... no joke. I already tried Tomahawk but they are way to prog for mine taste. O well time will tell if people in Japan/North America/South America/Egypt/or any country with a pirate history will start there own folk metal.

The best Folk Metal band out there is without doubt IMO Swedish Månegarm! Their demos kicked ass. Nordstjärnans tidsålder was a great mix of Black Metal and Swedish Folk Music. Havets vargar is my favourite and by far their most extreme album with excellent lyrics (who can resist the ones in Den sista striden?). With Dödsfärd they became more melodic and though is has some songs you forget there's still many great ones and don't forget the so beautiful Gillesvisan. Vredens tid got even more melodic but is even better, one of their best, also contains some of their best lyrics and Segervisan had one of the best live chants ever when I saw them live. Urminnes hävd is a Folk Music EP and shows how good their ballads are. Their latest work Vargstenen is a masterpiece and has an excellent mix of calm and heavy tracks.
Their concert last Saturday was one of the best I've ever seen. hope they'll be even better on Friday!

My second favourites are Ensiferum, maybe because I'm such a fan of Mäenpää and especially Lindroos. Wanderer has become me and my friends favourite booze song!

On third place we have Folk Symphonic NS-Black Metal band Nokturnal Mortum. Their music is so beautiful and has some of the coolest growls I've ever heard. Perun's Celestial Silver will always be one of my favourite songs, I was hooked right away.

I agree with you, it's hard to write lyris for folk metal(or even metal in general) in your own language, without making it sound rediculous. Also, when you write in your own language, it's so damn hard to make the myths, folklore and/or attitude justice.
