I guess the title says it all. We all know that within metal and it's sub-genres there's a lot of gifted musicians that create and produce a lot of great music and lyrics, but there's a lot more music and great musicians out there, that whatever the genre they play, they are great at what they do, or that were great at what they did (dead musicians also count). So, the idea is for all of us metalheads to dicuss who do you consider as great musicians outside the metal scene, or which are your favorites and why.

i've been listening a lot to robbie williams these past days. i've liked his music for a long time, but now i've been listening to his music a little more in depth and i like it a lot. specially his lyrics, which he writes himself, and that imo are very well written. i think he's a good musician... anyone agree or disagree?

I just checked out Al Di Meola's Elegant Gypsy and was surprised at how talented he is.
It's kind of Jazz Rock/Fusion with a little Latin flair thrown in and sped up to achieve an amazing display of guitar virtuosity.

..hmm, read all and have to agree on Beethoven and Ian Anderson. First was a lot before his time - especially in his last quartets, which I just find the word progressive for. Second had (!) one of the best best voices in rock-history, and a wonderful composing skill.

And there is to add: Шостакович - Shostakovich; he is one of the few, who found a musical way to express and condamn the catastrophy of second world war and its heirs.

I'm really pissed that someone suggested "Future Shock" as his best album to me, I listened to that and wasn't too crazy about it. I recently picked up 7 of his albums used at FYE and think that they are far and above that album. That man is a genius...

Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra get my votes. Bob Dylan is a master at lyric writing and having that beautiful sound that no matter what you listen to by him, you feel like you're living in the darkest days of the 60s.
As for Ol' Blue Eyes, I don't think I've listened to one song by him I don't like so far. In terms of pop in general (I keep seeing him being referred to as traditional pop) he might be the only artist in the genre I love with a passion. Plus, he's one hell of an actor.
Also, gotta love guys like Buddy Holly, Howlin' Wolf and Elvis Presley.

Tommy Johnson (not related((1896-1956) claimed to have sold his soul to the devil for mastery of the guitar. (Apparently he used to play it between his legs and behind his head, and would throw it in the air while playing it.) But his devil story was a self-confessed untruth he made up to enhance his fame. Some sources claim that that's how the crossroads story got attatched to Robert Johnson.
Or maybe that's where he got the idea from.

Goddamn Satanists.

Yeah, the 1800s were full of moral decadence.
Nowdays he'd probably get sued for copyright infringment.
