the last opeth thread reached the max of 500 posts....so this is the new one...:)
i've never started a topic before in about 4 years...but this is a good chance...:)
Opeth is a fantastic band, probably my favourite. i more or less like all their albums but i think i like blackwater park slightly more than the rest, maybe because it is the first one i ever listened to.
i am looking forwards to the new album and to see them live on the defenders of the faith tour in london in a few days!!!
anyway, you know the drill...discuss away....

it's great band and I like it specially when cover deep purpel becuz it is my another fav band
in another case I like it becuz the band has two genre that I like it
Ghost Reveries is best album

Blackwater Park entered 17th and Ghost Reveries 49th place on the list of "Top 100 albums (1991-2008)" in Swedish Metal magazine Close-Up. BP totally deserved it and I've nothing against GR being there too, it was mostly a surprise. Although the MS members would be furious about many albums on that list.

but to be honest the ms top 100 is probably not that much better either with so many people voting 10s and 1s especially just to have a top 100 they like...
i personally think blackwater park deserves to be in such lists quite high up! and ghost reveries is also an amazing album, so i'm not surprised its included...

No, can't find it on the Internet. I'd love to post it myself but don't have the time right now. And I'm pleased with it, I said as long as "Images and Words" by Dream Theater was on it I wouldn't complain. And it's there at #58! And the MS top is way better IMO, although to Close-Up's defence this one wasn't as obvious as MS but also only from the period 1991-2008. Which means no Reign in Blood, Master of Puppets, The Number of the Beast etc.

although i do understand where you are coming from, i must disagree with you. all 3 albums you mentioned are excellent. still life is imo the best between them, maybe because they introduced some new things. the prog rock, death metal mix in this album is starting to come together quite well at this point. and i think that they kind of continued this with blackwater park and maybe even perfected it (no such thing as perfect but you know what i mean...).
i know there is a hype about blackwater park and maybe it is even slightly overrated as you say, but this hype exists for a reason, and the reason is that this album actually is that good...
obviously i am not trying to change your mind here, since you could easily argue for different reasons that the other 3 albums you mentioned are better for you, but you can definitely not say that blackwater park is not a very good album. thats all

I kind of have the same views as Mr.Doctor. Still Life has always been my favorite, and I dont get the massive amount of hype behind Blackwater Park, its a good album, yes, but both Morningrise and Still Life are better IMO, havn't heard MAYH yet so I wouldnt be able to say anything about that one.

Naaaaa, I'm understand your point... BP is still a very good album and kick the shit out of many albums in metal. No doubt about that.
It's just that, I don't see why it's so popular and the best cd from Opeth. It's maybe in the 4th place from Opeth discography, but that's just me.

I havn't heard MAYH yet so I wouldnt be able to say anything about that one.

You said before that You liked MAYH's cover because it remains you about a kinda wood that you visited when you're were a child [right?] and you get some nightmares with it.
I recommend you that album... Because the music suits perfectly with the cover. It's a very dark and agressive album, but with that elegance which it's typical from Opeth if you know what I mean.

It's my second favorite after Morningrise. After MAYH comes Still Life... But those 3 albums are soooooooo good that it very hard to say which one is better.

Before i had a predujice listening opeth, becasue everybody in metalstorm was listening this, and in some bands hat everybody listen i get a disapoinment, but this was not the case, my girl was listening to opeth and it was Blackwater park, i didn't know yet who were them, so i asked her and she said me "Opeth". Since then Mikael Âkerfeldt is one of my favorite musicians. Ghost Reveries is for me the best work, oh and Still Life Of course (I think it's the only ones i have XD).

You should try the other ones as well if you want to be blown away

well i dont think you are exaggerating at all!!! opeth is by far my fav band and i missed them last year in the roundhouse although i live very close...for a very stupid reason, and also i have never seen them before...so it will definitely be an experience i will never ever forget for sure!!! i dont remember if i have ever been that excited to see any band before...:)

i will write my experience here on sunday i think...if i am not in a whole other world still...:)

i love opeth and i saw them at defenders of the faith and they blew me away, they played one song off every album and finished with the drapery falls....it was beautiful lol

new album's good because it was done by Opeth, but there's nothing original or fresh this time. Blackwater Park+Damnation all the way, i'm disappointed.

I agree, that album title on the cover is cheesy as hell. Overused font too. I personally think it would've looked better without a title and just the logo, but that's just me.

As for the songs, they're pretty standard Opeth. Which, for me, means that it's good, but nothing to freak out over. But good nonetheless. I'm just saddened that the Progressive Nation tour isn't coming anywhere close to I live.

I only heard pieces of the songs, so I dont know what to expect, just new Opeth songs.
