Ensiferum is amazing, but they get enough credit I think.
I voted for Finntroll. They were the band that really made me look into other folk bands, I love em.

I voted for Equillibrium, I'm a total fanatic for them, thought Sagas was absolutely incredible. Next in line would be Eniserum, Eluveitie, and then Turisas. If Turisas can put out another awesome album, they'll move higher on my list.

By tthe way, Ensiferum wins. The balance between the folk aspects and the metal aspects is perfect. Though I do like what Finntroll and Korpiklaani do, perhaps even love, and I enjoy a Moonsorrow epic every now and then, its Ensiferum that grabbed me first and has held on longest. Then again I am not a big fan of Petri (nor am I of Norther) but what Jari did with Ensiferum was, as usual, nothing short of total fucking metal genius.

Yeah, many people say the same. I like every kind of folk metal though: from the purest acoustic folk to the barely folky black metal!

"Best", I really don't know. "Best" is a word that I don't really like applied to different styles where a lot of subjective preference is involved.
But if I read that as favourite, I just had to go for Eluveitie. Their metal side may not be spectacular, but being a long time Celtic music lover (long before getting into metal, as a matter of fact), I was blown away by the authenticity and quality of the Celtic side of their music and the impressive and unexpected synergy with the Gothenburg metal they wove it with.
One probably needs to be well versed in pure Celtic music to be able to appreciate the brilliance of what they have achieved, though.

I remember when i first got into this 'folk-phase' a few years ago. All those crazy European bands creating metal influenced from folk music. However, i see the genre as quite tedious now. It's so popular, and bands are starting to sound like other bands, and the originality is leaving. There are some bands who bring in something new. Eluveitie is a good example.
europujan bands are TrOO folk bands, I know some bands say we're trOO metal, like manowar but realy folk its only euripeian and its true othe rcontinents, thay be true if play indina metal, bushmen metal or apache metal
Apache folk is some of the best folk music i've ever heard and it is not something to be mixed with metal. I prefer traditional folk music, no metal related, it sounds alot more organic and just better overall. I also like Cuban folk.
I don't like most of the bands on this poll, then again i'm not so crazy about the folk metal scene at all. Moonsorrow are worthy of mention though. Arkona and Thyrfing should have replaced poor acts like Turisas and Korpiklaani.

I'd definitely go for Moonsorrow / Ensiferum out of this seIection
I think other bands could have been mentioned here also, such as Orphaned Land and Arkona... to bring sort of variety into the folk metal... it ain't just happy jolly humppa metal that's classified as folk metal. (We got "Celtic metal", "Slav metal", "Middle eastern metal" , and so on)
Agalloch seems to be misspelled (and misplaced) in this poll, haven't heard this band that much before, but they don't belong in the traditional folk metal sense.

Damn, Ensiferum should never beat Moonsorrow in direct competition... both bands are surely good, but Moonsorrow are gods over viking lands...

Korpiklaani would be my favorites from this list, they are very good, but with special mention for Finntroll and Ensefirum as well.

I put Moonsorrow, but I would say agalloch however I don't really see them very much as a strictly folk metal band. Actually.... Moonsorrow isn't really these days either, but agalloch even less so. Eh.... whatever.
Oh and Eluveitie is highly overrated. Celtic Gothenburg... so practically In Flames meets Braveheart, whoopdee-freakin-doo.
