20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.
The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

Well Edguy or not, even though I like them I think I'll just not risk losing a good space and stick with Running Wild. I've finally had a good look at the running order and have made a plan for myself. Btw, don't forget your trunks. Wacken also means free entry to the swimming pool, so you even got some program when you get up early (and you most likely will if the weather is hot). It also means free showers and proper toilets while you would have to pay for both if you stayed at the campground. Well guys, It was a blast. I honestly had one of my best WOA's ever. And now I have a face on you people. It was a fun night meeting you all, even though I had to take off early (sorry again for that). In a whole I've seen 27 bands this year and apart from passing out during the Nevermore show (a combination of a huge sunstroke and a crowdsurfer to the head, but I'm fine thank you. Been out like 5 minutes and then it was time for Dragonforce  ) and a few sound problems they had at the party stage (Tristania anyone? Promonex?) the whole thing was just amazing. The Enslaved set last night was one of the most beautiful shows I've ever seen. Quote Grutle: "How many Vikings does it need to change a lightbulb? 1001. One to change the lightbulb and 1000 to invade England"Now I need to recover from the weekend, get my voice back (I actually only have one pitch left) and unfortunately buff out a few new scratches my car recieved by certain alcohol-influenced subjects... Looking forward to next year!

I only lost my earplugs in Nevermore's circle pit, but at least we didn't have any crowdsurfers. And I only managed to catch like 15 bands, and I'm glad Enslaved were one of them as they were absolutely divine! On a scale from 1 to 10 they'd get a 12 for scaring the shit out of me and lifting me up to total euphoria in a matter of split seconds. A show I will remember for quite a while and overall an awesome festival I won't forget that early either. See you next year, I suppose! Wednesday, 7 p.m., at the fountain of the beer garden

Right...am finally back home in London after laying on the beach in Barcelona for 5 days recovering from Wacken. Had the most amazing time at Wacken this year and it was really cool to meet you guys (sorry I didnt stay long though). I was in camp ground B - awesome location, close to everything except one very important thing....toilets! By Friday morning I was very f*cking sick of sleeping in a tent, but have to say I got more sleep than I thought I would. The 300 euro I spent on alcohol might have had something to do with that though. This was my 2nd Wacken and I plan on going to as many as possible! Highlights for me were Heaven and Hell, Motorhead, Machine Head, Nevermore, Saxon, and Testament AND I got on the Jager Perch Bar! Will load some photos soon. Missed out on the 2010 xmas tickets though

You have to pay 2,-? to get in, recieve a cheap paper wristband and inside there's nothing more than more merchandisers to sell stuff and said mini stage no one ever cares about. That aside, the fact that the WOA isn't exactly a non-profit organisation is not really a secret. You should see their german forum and all the people whining about it. But you can't satisfy anyone and forums do have a tendency to attract whiners. Whether you take part in all that commercial crap is then again your own choice. As long as they continue to offer the x-mas ticket for 20,- less every year I don't exactly have anything to complain about (though I did, long and detailed - in their forum ). You can still use the festival to discover new bands or see ones you wouldn't attend a regular show of. Show me another place where I can see 27 bands for 109,-?.

Written by corrupt on 20.08.2009 at 13:42 Okay, I misinterpreted that part apparently. It is true one has to go to a festival to see that amount of bands for such a sum of money. Btw, I have nothing agaianst people attending Wacken, what I can't stand about Wacken though is it's blatant down and out commercialism and people making it out to be the ultimate heaven for every metal fan, whereas not any festival is the ultimate for metalfans cause of the difference in preference in the sort of metal one listens to. And what really annoys me is that most metallers nowadays think that Wacken was the first truly all metalfest on mainland Europe (or even the world according to some) where in fact a certain festival which started in Eindhoven (but now has collapsed unfortunately) predates Wacken by about 4 years. Even Waldrock predates Wacken by a couple of years (and they are still going strong and haven't missed an edition since their first one) Btw Monsters of Rock at Castle Donnington even predates the Eindhoven one.

Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 20.08.2009 at 13:52 For a man in his 40's, you do care a lot about other people's thoughts and feelings. And you generalize a lot. From my experience (I'm 25 btw) a lot of the people you describe are from 14 to 18 years of age and just collect their first impressions of the metal world. I remember a time when I didn't even know there were other metal festivals than the WOA. Granted that's about 10 years ago, but I wouldn't have liked being judged by anyone like that back then. Unfortunately many people (I speak for Germany here) are attracted to metal because of it's esoteric reputation rather than a true interest in the music. For some people that may change. But I can't tell you how many guys I met, ranging from 15 to over 30 that told me they liked metal and when it came down to the facts there was only Lacuna Coil, Evanscence and Nightwish on the female and Amon Amarth, Soulfly/KoRn or <insert random *core band> on the male side. And the rest was textbook cliché. In fact I meet these people everyday. In subway trains, restaurants, parties, on campus, hell I even befriend a few of these guys. But I've come to an agreement with myself that I just listen to music for different reasons and should not worry about their motivation any more than I do about my own (I don't, which is the cool thing about it). And I certainly won't let these kids ruin anything for me I'd otherwise enjoy. And, be it as commercial as could be, that also includes the WOA. I have greater problems with a subgroup of the aforementioned that brings aggression and brutality to a festival. That is what will keep me from going to Wacken one day. Everything else remains my own choice.
