Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2009

Location: Germany, Wacken (Festivalgelände)
Date: 29 July 2009 - 01 August 2009
Website: wacken.com
Organizer: ICS Event Service

Tickets:

SOLD OUT!!

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

Well, they also said in mid-March they'd announce at least one more band until the end of the month and they didn't. So I'm not really surprised.

Wow! This anniversary(!) line up officially blows... Very safe and mainstream choice of bands, but not exactly the kind of bands you want to go for (Europeans can see those bands every half year or so). Even the final TBA names can't make up for this pile of redundant crap.

^ that's for all the people buying a clearly over-priced ticket to a clearly overrated/sellout festival without knowing the final line up.

I don't think the lineup is final yet. Just check the number of bands in 2008 and compare it with the number of bands for 2009.
How are they supposed to fill three days of live shows with those bands unless the all play twice or two hours each? Even with this list of "new" bands they're just about half there.

I think Thryce meant that the lineup would still suck even if all the remaining TBAs are "top-artists" or "non-mainstream" ones.

I actually like the lineup. There are quite a few bands I would like to see

Definitely. But compared to some legendary bands and famous reunions they had in the past it really looks poor. I'm thinking Emperor, Immortal, At The Gates, Avantasia and some more that were really just outright insane to be there. And such a number is missing this year, leaving us disappointed by a lineup that isn't really bad on it's own.

Plus, they filled some gaps with appearances of what needs to be called their house-bands. I've stopped counting the appearances of Saxon or Motörhead. Not to mention Subway To Sally or Schandmaul who play everything anywhere without even making good music. And the list goes on.

To add my two cents to this discussion... I remember the Wacken organizers saying (right after last year's edtiion) that this 20th Anniversary would be something totally special. And that promise they didn't keep, when looking at the line-up thus far. They will really have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to keep to their words.

Is anyone of you following their news? I use their rss feed to stay informed and I've noticed some heavy action on all those "Wacken Rocks", "Wacken Rocks Seaside" things. Maybe they just lost focus. Or they're getting those other (arguably superfluous) fests out of the way first.
Anyway, they still have a few days left and what counts is the end-result I haven't given up yet.

Tbh I gave up on Wacken's line-ups right from eiditon nr. 1. Their programming just isn't my cup of tea. But then again that also applies to Graspop.

True, true. They really have to confirm some great bands to save this line-up. Don't make a promise if you can't keep it. I know there is still some time left, so I'm expecting something really big, for making up for this shitty line-up.

Looks like I am going to be at Wacken this year after all!

There's more to a festival than it's line-up, but even so, I think they have something to pull out of the bag yet. As long as it isn't Opeth I'm happy. Hahahaha.

Great fucking brilliant news, that means no more Running Wild live ever again.

Horrible fucking band hahahahahahaha

And this is supposed to be the 20th Anniversary SPECIAL show of Wacken? How hilarious, this line-up is their worst ever and then to think not a single one has ever been worth going to.

Selling this out before the line-up was even complete (or even half complete) just shows how mind-nu,blingly dumb and brainless MOST metalheadfs are.

As for me it is not just about the bands that are playing, although I like almost half of the current setup, still the big bang is missing though. If you don't like it, don't go - sell your ticket, there are more metalheads that are waiting for tickets.

Never saw Running Wild live, looking forward to it as I am very much into this kind of metal.

Most people with tickets now will be going to Wacken for a good time, regardless of the dissapointing line-up. Do you understand the concept?

Yes, and to me that IS dumb and brainless. A good can also be had at home with infinitely better music and beer and also lots cheaper.
To me a festival is 99% about MUSIC not about having a good time regardless of the line-up. But I am I am alone in that sense, who knows.

Well here I will agree with Marcel. Sure his words are heavy but god damn how people can be so stupid to buy tickets without even knowing the line up! Come on! Are they sheep or what?

I'm sure that Wacken is funny and all but come on there are a lot of other "funny" fest with better line up! It's not fun-fair, it's a Metal (music) festival!

And btw, sheep are dumb and brainless (and smelly)... so...

PS: and you should think about HF, the line up is great and it's a fucking great place with cool atmosphere too

Agreed.

People who say that the "party atmosphere" or whatever is worth going to in itself must have WAY too much money to throw around if that's actually a defining reason for their going. The running order saved the line-up last year as shit overlapped with goodness 9 times out of 10, but this year it's just comedy.

Can't talk for all the others who bought their tickets without knowing the line-up, but Wacken is a metal fest that attracts people all over the world. If you don't buy your tickets early you might have bad luck. On the other hand, if you bought your ticket and are not happy with the line-up you won't have a problem to resell it, there are many people that would want to go, but can't get any tickets anymore.

I for one like the line-up, although a real headliner is missing. I will also enjoy the camping, bbq'ing and chilling out with peeps I rarely see

They can't be seroius? D-A-D?? If it's the Danish band it has nothing what so ever to do with metal. They're hard rock at best and their latest few albums have only been soft rock

D-A-D played in Wacken in 1995. That's probably why they are invited back. No they are not metal, but they do play rock of some sort.

Some of you are very hard to satisfy. You ask for big bands, but at the same time you complain that they only hire mainstream bands.

And as someone said, you have to buy your ticket early if you want to make sure you can go to wacken. It is indeed very easy to sell your wacken ticket, so I don't see the problem in buying it before all bands are confirmed.

I can't believe how many people keep bitching about wacken not being cool anymore etc. If you don't like the lineup, don't buy the ticket, if you already bought your ticket, sell it. It's not really that hard guys. Do you complain about all not-cool concerts or festivals?? No, you just don't go.
