Well, I just like to know who the bass players on this forum are, the bass is not to be underestimated ...
I play bass myself, pretty shitty gear actually .. I'm playing exactly one year right now.
An adonis four strings, and a Stagg 80W amplifier, it's just doable to play in a band
Monday I'm recording a demo
I love to play rock and metal (of course) Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy name and Dream of Mirrors are heaven!

So .. What's your gear ? Favorite songs to play on the bass ? Band ?

I don't remember Lack of Comprehension or See Through Dreams... but I remember the hardest part for me to play with proper intonation/speed was that riff in the beginning of Cyrstal Mountain. It just takes practice really...

Crystal mountain is pretty easy actually. I think lack of comprehension and the philosopher are crazy on the bass.
Philosopher, you cant really get the same tone as he uses a fretless.

Yeah, if I try to play it now its pretty easy. But when I was new to fingerpicking, Crystal Mountain really was the one song that set me in the direction of being obsessed with fingerpicking.

Yeah, Crystal Mountain has that finger picking part in the pre-verse eh? That song when my band played it live helped stretch my fingers a bit because it was the first time I really learned a song like that...

For the record, BC Rich basses are awful unless top of the line models are purchased. but if you're gonna drop lots of money for a high end bass, BC Rich (hopefully) wont be your first choice.

i say this because im spending time at home during the christmas break i have and the only bass i have at my parent's house is my godawful Eagle.

I know what yoy mean. I've got a BC Rich NJ Beast bass from 2003 and that "beast" sucks.
At that time I 've paid 1000 ? and that's far too much for that instrument.

even the NJ series is subpar? man, thats unfortunate. BC Rich has sick ass lookin basses but if their sound ain't shit, then looks go out the window. BC Rich's old instruments were top notch, especially the IronBird. i wonder what happened...

Maybe I overreact. It is not sooo bad, but my expectations where higher after reading some good comments and if you buy one for that price you hope you've got a very good bass.

I must admit I love my BC Rich NJ Mockingbird GUITAR! Very smooth playing and made for metal! So I don't think BC Riches are all crap.

Just got lighter strings for my bass .40-.95. I wish I got this before, its so much easier for me to do fast runs on this and I like the sharper tone better.

Hey guys, I'm a bassist too. I play a Spector Euro 5 NT (all-maple, bright green stain) through an Ampeg SVT-CL head and a SVT-810E cab. Just introducing myself, I'm new to the forum and everything. I'm glad to belong to a forum specifically dedicated to metal now rather than just using the "metal section" of other, generic forums.

Hey, thanks for the warm welcome. I play most kinds of metal, but I keep myself open to other styles of music as well. I love playing some old-school finger-funk, and I was in my school's Jazz ensemble for a year. I still would be if it weren't for the teacher being a complete tool. 98% of what I play is metal, and the metal I play is usually something that I recognize as taking a lot of talent to write and/or play.

Thats cool. So I'm guessing that being in that ensemble was a growing experience? If so, thats really good. I mainly honed my skills improvising with friends and practicing scales. I think its important for musicians to challenge themselves and learn to do that in a live setting with other musicians as well. Though I say that, I was never in a band that required serious bass playing skills, so for me to improvise with other musicians was a good reconciliation.

You're right, being in that band was a great learning experience. That was the first opportunity I had to lock in with a decent drummer and work on keeping time well. That translates very well to metal, too, only at like 4 times the tempo

I got a deal with my bass, amp and case for an equivalent of $500.

whatd you get?

Kustom am and Cort action 4 string.

Hi man, I have a question, I'm looking for a bass and I'm a completely n00b about the subject, I just have the strong will to back it up
I found this Cort G-series 4 string + Warwick Blue Cab 30Watt Amp for around 120 euro., second-handed.
Like I said before, I don't have a clue about this subject, I just have the will to try it out and well, you have to start somewhere Could you tell me if it is worth it?I'm not really looking for anything special since it will be my first instrument ever (well, the first one that I buy anyway), I just want something good for learning and since I can afford it and it has already an amp...

Other's opinion about the subject will be appreciated as well

So I went through some research and found other options, some prices are quite low and makes me doubt but I will post them anyway.
- Marshall 10watt transistor amp, two canals: clean and overdrive, for cd and mp3, around 70 euro
- Randalll, 43watt for 90 euro... Then again, I don't need something huge since it's just so I can practice home.
- two small marshalls, 10 watt each, the upper one is a G10 MkII and the one down is Valvestate 10, model 8010. Made in India and england respectively 70 euro both and 40/50 euro if I buy just one. I want something small for my room so this seems fine(?)
- Yamaha RBX350 85 euro, at first it was 110 euro but the owner changed the price.
- Ibanez GSR 100 for 70 euro, the owner says that he bought it for 190 euro and it's around 1 year old.

And of course the Cort G-series 4 string + Warwick Blue Cab 30Watt Amp that I posted before for 120 euro.

Well.. even though you're not going to need to practice with loud volume, i still reccomend that you get an amp with lots of wattage or t least some kind of large speaker ... its VERY important in bass amplifiers as the 'bass wavelength' interval is wide and needs a large speaker and needs to be played loud .. if u play quietly or play through a tiny speaker it'll be as if you're listening to music through your laptop or ipod's speakers ... so, you might a big amp .. the warwick 30 watt being ideal ... and the 43 randall one is even better ... drop the marshalls.. 10 watts is useless for bass.

My band's bassist had some crappy bass amp that sounded more trebly than bassy. its liek playign lead guitar on it .. he upgrades to a Roland Cube 30x Bass amp.. with a 10 inch speaker .. its great.. it had built in effects, EQ, lots of distortion modes + clean channel ... it was for about 220 EUR ... but i'm sure you'll find it much cheaper used ... if you could get it for half price (ie 110 EUR) then definitely go for it ... its such a rare gem

I'm a fan of Ibanez basses, personally. I prefer a cheap Ibanez to a higher end Yamaha (have owned a couple different models of both over the years), so I'd go with the GSR 100 though it is a low end instrument. I haven't played with Cort basses, so I can't comment on that one.

I picked up an Ibanez Iceman 300 series a couple months ago and it is by far my favourite bass I've ever owned. The active pickups give so much more control over the tone and the neck is a thing of beauty to my short stubby fingers.

Shit.. yeah, you know I think Zombie is right. The price seems to be very decent. I'm not going to be a very big help since I never played that model before, but if its cheaper than a regular Cort Action bass at second hand price it has to be worth it.

I just tuned my bass to standard B. It's been like that for the last few weeks haha. I was going to get a professional to do it, but fuck it... I'm too lazy. It so low its ridiculous, I'm not used to it. But its hella fun.

I agree about the Ibanez GSR, its a very decent bass and I'd def prefer it over a Yamaha. Ibanez GSR's are pretty similar to Cort Action 4-string basses. The neck from what I remember is a tad narrower which makes it easier to play, but yeah... its a good instrument.

Thank you all fellas, I've been asking to a lot of people and everything seems to point to the Ibanez GSR 100 so I will contact the guy during this week, I just hope the bass is in good condition and that there's no dead frets or anything like that.

After that I will try to contact the guy with the bass/amp combo and ask if I can just buy the Warwick 30Watt.

Well, hopefully with the bass being second hand you won't have to adjust the action or anything too much. Thats a problem I found with brand new basses off the shelf, its sometimes hard to get a clear idea of what it really is capable of because of the factory made strings and action. My Cort I bought when was it brand new was so hard to play because of that, but after I wised up and learned how to adjust action/replace the strings myself it was SO much easier and fun to play. Just keep that in mind.
