Hi metalstormers,

The title is clear. Please remember and reply with the weirdest or funniest metal band names that you have come accross during your life in the scene.
It is in fact almost impossible to name a metal band nowadays that is not being used already, above all, if you want to give it a metalrelated name involving words like Hell, Warrior, Doom, Death, Thrash, Black, Red, Heavy, Pink...SORRY slip of the tongue, Steel, Fire and the like.
Last time I was in a band we were thinking in having the most strange name as possible so as to attract attention and, at the same time, not to be sued by another band with already that name. We thought about choosing: "Where is Bin Laden?" and translated from Spanish: 600 mb of Porno or Anita's great belches -Anita is a friend of mine with body of a model, face of an angel, not metalhead but a bit posh... and that belches like a drunk truckdriver-. Whenever she belches, everybody looks at me or another boy in the group.

The weirdest names I have heard from established bands are "Cadáveres de Tortugas" that means "Turtle corpses" that it is really twisted and weird and the best one: "Bodies in the gears of the apparatus" Fuck, that's a name. Complex and re-twisted.

I remember as well a discussion with a friend of mine that liked that musical genre that was called "Noise" 10 years ago. There were very strange band names in that label. Once he was naming some of them and we were laughing, then he said something that I did not understood. I said: what? Vaginal stone? -In Spanish: piedra vaginal.
He said: NO, weird, you are twisted. That name makes nonsense. PERA, Pera vaginal! -IN English: Vaginal pear. The real name was even more strange that the one I understood.

Well. Please tell me the weirdest names you have come accross during your life and we will laugh or even fear the twisted minds of their members.
S.O.D. Stormtroopers of Death is one to fear.

Bye.

I like Steven Wilson, but the image in my head of you punching him in the face for mispronouncing Sunn's name makes me laugh.

Start watching at 2:45

I love the way it tracks backwards to reveal the shirt as he says it (wrong). It sounds even worse because of his accent

nope I am referring to how he fucked up Opeth. Solo and with Porcupine Tree he never did anything worthwhile for me. The guy makes everything sound soulless.

Souless!? Now you've lost me Marcel, I'd be hard pressed to find more moving music than what Steven's done, with PT in particular. And I'd say Damnation is one of Opeth's finest albums.

I'm not so sure about that, Ghost Reveries is a very strong album to my ears, Watershed not nearly as much. Although one of their worst albums for me had Steven involved... not a big fan of Deliverance.

I like Deliverance a lot, but I gotta agree with Marcel (though not as strongly): his production style is pretty sterile and bland to my ears. PT albums after In Absentia have lost all the warmth and intimacy the band could evoke before.

I agree with you on Ghost Reveries. I actually really liked that one as well. I also agree that Deliverance is, perhaps, one of their weaker albums. I started out thinking that most of it wasn't as good as the rest of Opeth's works, but after a while it grew on me. Still, not their best. One part I disagree on you with, though, I thought that Watershed was incredible.

But hey, if you guys are saying that Steven Wilson is responsible for how "bad" Ghost Reveries or Watershed (or Heritage) may have been... you know he wasn't involved with them, right? He could only be indirectly responsible for how much "weaker" they sounded. He had no part in producing them, though Mikael had asked him to each time they were about to record. Steven was often away on tour during the recording of those albums, so the only influence he could've had on those albums is what he had already taught Mikael during their time together working on BP, Deliverance, and Damnation.

Anyway, he didn't screw up Blackwater Park, did he? And I thought that Fear of a Blank Planet, the Incident, and his solo albums were all great. His production skills can't be that bad. But then that's just my opinion, and that doesn't really count for much in a sea of different opinions, does it?

"Screw up" may be too strongly put, but I do think in terms of sound the album is inferior to My Arse or Still Life. Either way, this is quite off topic.

"My Arse"?

What the fuck, dude.

I thought that Blackwater Park sounded empty and gloomy, like it was supposed to. My Arms Your Hearse and Still Life were both great, but I think in terms of production quality, Blackwater Park and after have a better, more refined sound. You may not like the refined sound, but I think it worked great for each album in their own way.

Anyway, to stay on topic, I submit a shit-ton of weird band names all at once by posting this link:

Is there someone who doesn't know the album by that name?

Anyway, I would totally listen to He's Dead Jim. Maybe I'll create a tribute band called I'm a Doctor, Not a Bricklayer. Are These My Pants? seems legit, too. Most of those names try too hard to be funny or clever, though. The Nine Inch Richards, really?

No Idea what you find weird about the name Nine Inch Nails.
It's like calling your band Powerdrill or Hammer. Or haven't you ever come across nine inch nails? When I am am at home without trying very hard I see loads of places where nine inch nails have been used.

Aside from Ghost Reveries I agree with you. That was still an amazing album (at least for me it was, maybe also because it was my first Opeth album), but Watershed was definitely not as great as their earlier work. And Heritage... well, a good album on its own, but bad compared to the Opeth discography. Say what you will, but there are few bands with such a great discography. Damnation is also a great album, but due to the lack of variety I can't appreciate it as much as their other records.

And I'm not sure if it's Wilson's fault that Opeth went downhill. I think the new line-up also has got something to do with it. For me Opeth went downhill after Ghost Reveries... when Lindgren left, which makes me wonder about his contribution to the band when he was in it. Might've been more than everyone thought.

That is something I also wonder when it comes to Opeth.... I really miss Martin Lopez too. His style was way more interesting than Axel's. Lopez was a bit more jazzy so to speak while Axel is great but... just too metal. It sounds weird but considering Opeth's music, Lopez added some good extra flavour.

Yep, me too. Only Akerfeldt is left of the original line-up, although Mendez is already in the band for a long time too (16-17 years). Hell, the worst was when Lindgren left (who was ridiculously educated for someone in a band I came to find out, having Master's degrees in physics as well as philosophy, while Mikael doesn't have any education as far as I know, just talent), but now that Lopez (who left due to anxiety attacks, which is definitely understandable) and even Wiberg are out of the band, there's Axenrot (who seems a great drummer, but I don't think he contributes a lot to the band musically) and Akesson. He might be the only one of the new members that has a lot of input, but I'm not sure. We'll just have to wait until the next album (which will hopefully come this year, but probably will come in 2014) to see whether Opeth has really gone downhill for good this time.
