So anyway, I've seen people tracking down a lot of bands like Nile, Strapping Young Lad, Arch Enemy, Decapitated, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth and even Zao and more of the same sector.

Do we still remember the old school days? what has happened to people talking about Xecutioner and Disattack, Carbonized, Deceased, Disincarnate, Insanity and many others? yeah maybe they are not that active now, but does it means that much to be a band releasing many albums in the present so we can talk about them?

I was a kid in those days, but I know many of you remember exactly what happened back then; to the other people, what do we really know about the old school?

well at least you do

but anyway, Old School metal has become like...the new classical music for metallers, most of them know it's important but hardly ever listen to them don't you think? kind of like what regular people does with Vivaldi and all those dudes.

so yes, I guess in the present day people needs to have something fresh to talk about, if they go around talking about the tape trading days either is nothing new or people won't mind or people won't even know what the hell you are talking about.... though I really would love to see a good discussion about old school metal...damn that could be re-freshing (irony)

I do remember those names you mentioned...I even wrote a review on an Insanity album, it never became popular obviously but it's good to know that some dudes know about those veterans...

PS: just so people won't get lost in translation, disattack was the name of Carcass and Xecutioner was the name of Obituary

I see the old school as important for influencing what I listen to, thought I simply can't enjoy it. The progression in music has led to the more heavier and more evil bands today that I prefer over say Iron Maiden or early Death.

I think all metalheads should respect the old school metal, not only in death metal, black metal, or stuff like that, but also in traditional metal, thrash, etc....Those bands created the genres that we enjoy so much today, and alot of the older bands have some good stuff if you take the time to check it out (of course, production-wise it isn't the same as today, but still there's alot of good music..Most of it even better than the metal nowadays, because commercialism has changed much of the metal scene over the years)..But hey, with that said, I don't know much about old school death metal, black metal, etc.. I'm more into heavy metal.

An old-school thread

I fuckin love old-scool tech or progressive death and thrash bands. I've been bothering my mind with this one thing, maybe you can shed some light on it. What happened to the sound of death bands, there's something in the sound of new death metal bands that I dislike. is it the production, the growls, less melody or what?

Without Old School we wouldn't have what we have today. I think it's hard to talk about the uber-kvlt Old School acts because they only release one or two answering machine recorded demos with about three copies to give to the other band members. All that aside, old school Metal is great. I enjoy it. If you want to talk about it, why don't you open a thread about an older band, just like the numerous threads about newer ones. I used to be big into Old School but my tastes fly around. Some of my favorites though were bands like Macrodex, Nihilist, and Rottrevore. There's are tons of older bands out there, especially kick ass Swedes.

"Answering Machine Recorded Demos" fucking lol man..hahaha that phrase is priceless. I guess I know nothing about old school black..I just like Von, Bathory, Venom and I guess that's it...well Beherit has been haunting my stereo lately..but that's about it...I can't stand raw as shit black metal so I guess that's the main reason as old school black is really freakingly raw

actually herz, the old school of black metal is not so raw as you may think; for example Hellhammer one of the first bands ever to experiment with black metyal is not raw at all, on the contrary their sound has great audio. Bathory also has nice production, Necrodeath and Vulcano, etc. so I think you'll be quite pleased when you hear those bands I just mentioned.

about Death Metal, I think people forgot about those bands; Hellwitch is a name that many metalheads do not know and they actually influenced bands like Death and such others. the same thing with Intense Mutilation and armoured Angel.

though you know something? I'm pleased because people still talk about Atheist, Pestilence, Morbid Angel and Possessed. even though those bands are not that old school but they are indeed pioneers

yeah well I know those bands...except for Vulcano which I'm searching for right now I guess I've seen Hellhammer and such as not THAT black metal bands you know? they have tons of other influences in their music ...

IMO, that's because of the over-produced blastbeats-wankery way of composing these days. Death metal lost almost all of its thrash roots nowadays.

Written by Herzebeth on 07.07.2006 at 19:26

I guess I know nothing about old school black..

Tormentor - Anno Domini
Bulldozer - The Day Of Wrath

Try these two albums. They are the kind of dirty-produced satanic-themed thrash, which was the real definition of BM, IMO. But for the bit later oldschool, I would advise you to check the south-american scene. Bands like Sarcófago, Vulcano, Holocausto, Exterminator, Mystifier, etc.

Zombie, M.D.
With extreme metal Id say the older stuff is typically the best overall. I particularly like the early stuff that isnt really easily distinguishable as black metal, death metal or thrash. Stuff like Sarcofago, Sextrash, Mystifier, Profanatica, Necrovore, early Beherit, Blasphemy and Nuclear Death.

YEEEEY finally a topic that keeps making me post again and again

anyway, Yeah I love Master, I think their early demos are fucking brilliant and ahead of their time you know? Actually the same thing happened to Macabre one of my favorite Grindcore bands, they released punk demos and punk albums but they became so fast and so extreme that suddenly the were catalogued as grindcore...

I recently got some Genocide demos, If you ever have the chance to buy or get their stuff..don't miss it, it's like the cream of old school stuff...raw, violent and really fucking powerful.

@Bloodshed: yeah I know Krabathor; they have an album which when I bought it made me go "shit this thing is scary" the vocals had something like...a shivering feeling to them, and that cover..man that cover art fucked my mind and I don't even know why but it's really fucked up and blue and whatever.....the album is Cool Mortification...get it soon.

@Zombie: Nuclear Death man what a great band...bride of insect is one of the most impressive albums I've heard yet.

oh...so you were refering to the black metal side of things? damn that's actually worst... while bands like Sarcofago and Von (all raw and agressive and fuckign violent) are from the old school other bands like Dimmu Borgir and Catamenia are the "progressed" ones (all melodical and gay) so...even if you say you are refering to whatever style..the old school is heavier and more evil...yep

and by the way there's no way a band can be more evil than Iron Maiden let me tell you.....bunny....

So what, melodic black metal is gay?

Anyhow, what's the classification of old school here in this thread? '80s, right?

I always liked old school thrash. Anacrusis anyone?

@Daru : One Anacrusis fan here ,although I'm not the biggest that's for sure. I wanted to post here before but I just don't have anything to say beside "AUTOPSY !!!!1" or something like that. Anyway, I do worship the old days and their lot of godly metal music, I've spent the last 2 years (well it's 50% of my actual metal 'life' actually, rather short I know) digging and looking for good extreme metal to listen to, and by coincidance most of the stuff comes from pre-1994.

Beside bland statements like these I don't know what to say, mid eighties and early nineties are maybe the best era metal ever had (like most of you agree I guess)...

One thing I like about all this "old school" feeling are old Death metal videoclips, band members are just wearing casual clothes and stuff (despite the shallowness of clothes I've always found that fact great), Black and White...Yum.

My favorite bands from the old school could be : Atheist, early Amorphis (The Karelian Isthmus, perhaps the best melodic DM album ever IMO...) , Sorcery, Xysma,Deathstrike,Asphyx,Benediction, Autopsy, early Therion, Dark Millennium, early Tiamat, early Sentenced, Watchtower,Nocturnus, Demilich, Entombed, early Edge of Sanity,Pan.Thy.Monium and on and on .... Well you know them all I guess !
