More and more we see black metal bands merging their sounds with a really "ambient" approach. Was wondering if anyone here knows a few of those bands.

Most known and talented bands include :

Nocternity (nothing short of AMAZING albums)
Vinterriket (he's got maybe too many albums but he's really good, and he joined Nocternity as keys player)
Paysage d'Hiver (great raw ambiance and some vinterriket styled keys passage)

well played. only like a review, i wouldn't unleash anything i've recorded on the world until i felt it was worth releasing... and i have recorded probably 3-4 hours of effects-laden droning Old type stuff with a buddy.

anyways, back to subject at hand.

Whenever I hear about dark ambient, I think about those projects like Stratvm Terror, using unlikely sounds within the melody, I don't know whether it's a simple synthesizer or they actually are scratching a piece of steel near the microphone..
But then when I hear an ambient black metal recommendation It's usually a normal bm band with some keyboard passages... Aren't there bm bands which mix that weird kind of dark ambient with their sound? (And by mix I mean really mix, and not have a track dark ambient and then a track black metal, or raw bm tracks with a dark ambient interlude...)

Well.. First I heard the known ones, like Vinterriket, Abruptum, Axis of Perdition... I might have heard some unfortunate albums/songs, but as I said, it looks like thee have some black metal tracks and other ambient tracks, more like Ambient/ Black Metal instead of "Ambient Black Metal" for me..
I heard lots of other that I don't remember the name now, but the same occurred. The track "Piercing Where They Might" from "Lurker of Chalice" is just as I'd expect to be ambient black metal. However this band's other tracks aren't the same way.
I heard Darkspace, and so far it is awesome. Perhaps something in that line? Besides a slight better production would be welcome.

Velvet Cacoon, Xasthur, Coldworld, Murmuüre, Marblebog, In Vino Veritas. Off the top of my head.

I know what you mean now. I think that Joe has good suggestions in this topic for you (the post above this one) and I just wanted to add one of my favorite bands: Gnaw Their Tongues and one of side projects of its frontman: Aderlating. These bands are likely to be a little disturbing for you but I think their brand of noisy blackend ambient might appease you

I personally consider Lurker Of Chalice to be a prime example of proper ambient black metal... Specially in the middle and later half of the album.

I'm now hearing the recommendations. Coldworld and Murmuüre seem to be the best ones. Liked them. Funnily I have already stumbled across Coldworld on youtube suggestions when I was hunting DSBM stuff, but never stopped to hear it entirely. Also Marblebog wasn't at first what I expect but it is indeed pretty interesting... Gotta look upon that.

hell, Gnaw Their Tongues is disturbing(ly great) and exactly what I was looking for (:
Still... So many albums.. Which ones are the best would you say?

And mr doctor, yeah I probably need a second listen on the album..

And yeah, I didn't figure out how to multiquote...

Oh... Gnaw Their Tongues (and all Morie's projects) would be a great recommendation for you if you already liked some of his stuff. There's a shit load of stuff that guy has done. So it might help you to check out the thread I started a while ago about all his stuff.
Coldworld and Murmuüre (specially the later!) are great indeed. Glad you found some of the stuff you were searching for. and yeah, I suggest you to give Lurker Of Chalice another try. Specially the tracks "Spectre As Valkerie Is", "Minions", "This Blood Falls As Mortal, Pt. 3" and "Fastened To The Five Points" which I think represent a part of the style quite well.

As for multiquote. I usually open different widows of the same page, quote each user and then use good ol copy/paste to make one single bigger post.

Cheers!

I have heard most of GTT's LPs and just a few EPs. My favorite albums by gnaw their tonges are "Bubonic Burial Rites [EP]", "All The Dread Magnificence Of Perversity" and "L'Arrivée De La Terne Mort Triomphante". Here are a few youtube links:

I just read all pages and it came to my attention that no one mentioned Lunar Aurora. I am focusing on the album "Andacht" wich is my personal all time ambient black metal favorite until thusfar. I think the balance between used soundscape and the mixture of good layered blastbeating and black metal aethics has caught my attention.
Pitiful the band has splitted up after their latest album. Although the the latest album wasn't my all time favorite, means I can say that I don't like all the stuff they made.
Once I listened to one of their album at the library(I believe it was "Of Stargates and Bloodstained Celestial Spheres") and I just walked away by the dislike I had of the music.

Also, I noticed no one seems to speak about Wolves in the Throneroom wich is/was a big band in the USBM/Ambient genre.

I know a guy on youtube that uploads great bands everyday called Lightfox177. Thanks to this guy, I got introduced to some great unknown obscure bands.

A very good recommendation and similair to Lustre and Darkspace is Alrakis which has the repetitive sound of Lustre mixed with the atmosphere and intent that Darkspace has.

thanks for the rec on that last one.The irony is after i just read your hate on the hipster black metal thread, you like Wolves in the throne room

Not really a massive fan of Luna aurora, i think they use too many layers for my liking..or something like that, they just don't pull off much of atmosphere for my liking

I really don't think that WiTTR is an ambient BM band. They are really good atmospheric black metal act but ambient? highly doubt about it.
I have not listened to Lunar Aurora yet. Thanks for bringing up them. Alrakis ,is very fine, and their 2011 album was really interesting

Woods of Desolation isn't straight ambient black metal, but they are very atmospheric and even relaxing. "As the Stars" is their latest album that is just about to be released on LP. No, I don't work for them; I just love the band.
