Metal Storm Awards - Staff Picks For 2008

With the Metal Storm Awards 2008, you, the metalhead, were given your say in which albums were the best of their respective genres in 2008.

We, the staff of Metal Storm, also had our own internal polling done to determine our selections for "best in show" of each genre. Just like you, we spent the month of February reviewing our final nominees for each category and voted for who we thought represented their respective genres best during the last calendar year.

As with some of the general MS awards (see Sludge, nearly a three way tie that was decided with, literally, Two Minutes to Midnight on the final day of voting), we had some close calls of our own to hash out. After much deliberation, much alcohol consumption, even more metal consumption, some heated words, a few fist fights, and one kick to the junk (sorry, Lucas, hope your "boys" are feeling better!), we've compiled our list of who we, as the staff, would hand out our awards to.

Now that you've had nearly two weeks to digest your results, and the initial furor over how "Band X should have won their genre, Band Y is complete bollocks and they should never have won, and Band Z should have been in a different genre" has died down, we figure the time is right to unveil our selections and let the bitching resume anew.

You may direct your comments, concerns, or outrage here.

Glad to see someone picked the new Heaven Shall Burn album. It's a pretty great album.

Wwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy better then "our" picks.
Only find Alternative Metal and Atmospheric/Symphonic Metal picks lame. And what's with Hail of Bullets? did Marcel bribe the rest of the staff?

Not bribe them, I brainwashed them, that's much cheaper than bribing

actually it wsa Coldworld and Darkspace that were tied and needed a run-off. the black metal category was extremely strong with no clear cut winner...

Now.. THAT'S really confusing. I don't understand how Coldworld could be that near to won the award. It was nice and all, but it was way more ambient than black metal.
I thought the strongest ones would be A Forest Of Stars, Darkspace and Gorath

well, everyone has their own individual preferenes. some staffers really liked Coldworld the best, others Darkspace, and others preferred other bands from the list.

the very fact that Gorath and A Forest of Stars made our top 10 nominees while larger bands Keep of Kalessin and Satyricon didn't should say something of staff taste.

IMO it certainly is. But then again I have always found AMon Amarth derivative and boring and generic at best. Too gimmicky for my liking.

Hmm .... I seem to recall *someone* sending me a copy of the 12" and the laser-etched double vinyl ... that sure sounds like bribery to me ...

Then again, I didn't vote in this, so it's all sort of irrelevant, isn't it? (Well, not entirely irrelevant - I did get a copy of the single best death metal album of the year out of the deal!)

Well, I can't comment on most as I've not heard nearly anything on this list, but I must say I'm not sure if AC/DC can really qualify for an award anymore. Nothing against them, but all their work has been pretty much the same over the years. Well, I suppose it makes sense, though; the hard rock scene isn't very good overall, but I digress.
