Stryper is a well know Glam Metal and Heavy Metal band hailing from O.C. Californian, USA. Primarily known through out the Metal community as the band that launched Christian Metal into the mainstream. With their yellow and black outfits and big hair, they toured the late 80's Glam scene introducing conservative Christian kids to the world of Metal and likewise opened the way for many Metalheads a glimpse into the Christian life.

The bands name comes from Isaiah 53:5: But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." Drummer Robert Sweet created a backronym which is: Salvation Through Redemption, Yielding Peace, Encouragement, and Righteousness.

Stryper broke up in the early 1990's but reformed in 2003 with a new look and sound. Their comeback album Reborn (see my review of the album) has launched them back into the music scene as they prepare for a new album this year and shows with Anthrax and Twisted Sister.

So does anyone else listen to these guys? Or am I the only one?

Never been too much of a fan but I appreciate their message (at least more than I appreciate the unholier than thou attitude of most extreme metal bands). Michael Sweet's vocals don't do anything for me, Les Carlsen for one is a better Christian metal singer. "To Hell With The Devil" is one helluva album and Free is one helluva song.

Yes I like some of Stryper's albums.... although most of the lyrics IMO are a joke, we have to recognize them as a value of their own for metal!

I am very surprised by the quality of Murder By Pride. Gotta be the best Stryper album since To Hell With The Devil, and 4 Leaf Clover is one of my favorite songs right now. While most of their discography is outdated, they were a gateway into metal for me at the age of 9...primarily because they were the only hard rock band my parents would buy for me at the time.

That said, I like the new album, good songs and a good message...without too much overt cheesiness. Michael Sweet can still hit some mean notes as well.

I'm surprised at the new album too... in a good way. They have captured the vibe (but not the sound) of their heyday, with plenty of energy and attitude. It's more melodic hard rock than metal, but that's OK when it's executed as well as this.

That was my thought as well. This is one album I can seem to put down right now. All of the great elements from the 80's are here; Sweet's soaring vocals, Oz's killer rifts, catchy songs, etc.

For sure. A number of tracks (with a few minor tweaks) could have come out of their 80s catalogue, so unlike Reborn, this is definitely still Stryper.

You'll be surprised, the album is a solid listen from start to finish. Nothing gound breaking, but better than what most (reborn) 80's bands are peddling these days.

I would look it out, but it's not on spotify. And I can't seem to see it anywhere in the UK.

:'( Why is Christian Metal so hard to come by?

Finally registered even though I've been all over this site for years now... Figured this would be a good topic to get my Metal Storm feet wet in... Read through the comments, and my $.02 on Stryper and Michael Sweet is this...

Personally, I think he (Michael Sweet) has one of the best voices in metal. That question always gets posed and the answers are always Halford, Dickinson, Dio, up to Empire-era Tate... I have to throw Sweet on that list. His vocal range is killer.

For me, the band gets better and better with each album. I really like and enjoy the older albums in the catalog, but feel like all the stuff Stryper and Sweet solo and Sweet/Lynch are remarkable.

Most people don't even know they are still around kicking ass. I have a Stryper sticker on my work truck (I do utilities work) and one day someone waiting for their kid at a bus stop came up and said, "Is that a Stryper sticker? I thought I recognized the logo. I haven't heard them in years." I responded with bro... you have a computer or a phone that has access to Google. Google it... You'll see they have several new records out since Against the Law...

That's all... My thoughts... I don't mind the God-stuff. The music is written well, the vocals are solid. I'm all-in when it comes to Stryper.

Stryper canceled Christmass shows, because singer Michael Sweet has eye surgery.

He explains
I just saw the eye doctor and I have a detached retina. I’ll need emergency surgery (vitrectomy) on my right eye. A lot of time has passed (long story and many details) so I may or may not have normal vision restored. I’m believing that it will be and I of course welcome all the prayers I can get.
My left eye (good eye) has an old retinal tear and will require laser (in office) to repair. It’s susceptible to retina detachment as well.
I’ll be down for the count for 2 weeks (laying face down so the bubble they place in my eye can stay in place) and I’m guessing that’ll be the toughest part of all this.
Doctor says this is hereditary.
The Christmas show is cancelled but tickets will be honored next year as we have rescheduled the show for 12/10/2022. My sincere apologies as it breaks my heart to cancel any show or event. I love you all and I deeply appreciate all the concern, thoughts and prayers🙏💛🖤

STRYPER frontman Michael Sweet has undergone surgery for a re-detached retina.

The 58-year-old guitarist/vocalist, who had his initial procedure in November, took to his Instagram earlier today (Tuesday, January 11) to write: "So this just happened. I made it through 7 weeks without incident and then I began to see a slight shadow again in my eye. Went to the eye doctor and confirming my gut feeling, my retina re-detached.

"I just got out of surgery and they removed scar tissue and injected an oil bubble that will stay in longer (3 months). They removed my cataract at the same time and when they remove the oil in 3 months, they'll replace my lens. I should be able to see fairly well at that time.

"I'm face down again up to the day the guys come out to record the new @Stryper album (1/25). I'll be writing lyrics as I remain face down for the next few weeks.

"The show must go on. I believe that this is the time to do the album. So, it's happening. Also, I can't wait to get through this and get out there and start touring in May.

"I deeply appreciate those who have stood by my side and who have continued to pray for and think of me."

Updates from vocalist:
Long day…..
Surgery was originally supposed to be at 10:30 so we got picked up at 6:30 to beat Boston traffic. Surgery wound up starting at 12:30. Went till 2:30.
Came to the hotel around 3:30 and crashed out.
This one was pretty tough (especially the last half hour) as I decided to go with local instead of general. Won’t be doing that again. Ever😳
Now the good news - my retina remained attached during surgery! There was a risk of re-detachment during surgery so I deeply appreciate all the prayers. I was thinking about that the entire time.
Thank you all🙏💛
Post-Op tomorrow morning at 8:00:-)
God bless you guys - much love to you al
