Okay man, first of all, i LOVE "Death" and Chuck is my personal guitar hero .. and YES they're pure old-school death and not "melodic" on their first few albums (they're not the first death metal band however, "Possessed" are the first.. but u know.. its like calling "venom" or "celtic frost" a "black metal" band, u know ? .. they were surely the influences on the creation of black metal.. but when u talk about black metal nowadays we talk Mayhem, Marduk, and shit like that.. same applies to Death Metal ... listen to Morbid Angel and Nile.. are they in ANYWAY similar to death ? nah, they're much more "brutal" and "death metal" .. i think Death, Possessed, Obituary are great bands who helped in the creation of death metal and shaping it and making it what it is today, but "modern" death metal is way much more brutal and louder.. it's the most extreme metal genre afterall (nevermind grindcore and goregrind, and other "grind" genres..etc)

i think Dying fetus is the "standard" or the "prototype" on how todays death metal bands should be... all of the "classic bnds" like death and morbid angel still hold their place as pioneers... but they're not just as "death metal" as "todays death metal bands" such as dying fetus

well first of all i dont think that the discussion here is only about Modern death metal but i think that it is a general discusion about th best death metal band. i like modern and old school bands the same. it's just that dying fetus's 2nd album and last 2 albums sound IMO too average and decent. nothing better. if you had seen my profile you'd see that i've listened to all the bands you've mentioned and that i've listened to all DF albums. talking abou the "best DM band" i think for example that Death and Morbid Angel are much more consistent than DF. If Stop At Nothing and War of Attrition where as great as Killing on Adrenaline and Destroy The Opposition are i'd probably compare them with the 2 bands i've mentioned but now i dont. not because they are a worse band but because their discography is not that consistent.

i agree, and if we "have to" rank these bands, i think Death and Morbid Angel should score higher than Dying Fetus.. at least for their role in shaping death metal and being pioneers .. i was just bummed that DF got only ONE vote and mine was the second .. this is VERY unfair to such a great band !

DEATH!

Although I really like Morbid Angel and Nile as well. But Death are the pioneers and they have the best riffs and I love the vocal style.

Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus but i voted to Dying Fetus.. maybe bloodbath or vader

Death FTW. I always seem to find something in each Death album that renews my appreciation for Chuck's work.

This is like, an impossible question. I'm into the more underground scene, although for some reason I'm just crazy about Massacre. I think it's because From Beyond was one of the first old school death albums I heard it and it really caught my attention.

I like their egyptian influences and the constantly gorgeous quality of their albums made them my number one.
But I wonder why Bolt Thrower isn't mentioned at the poll.

Im totally opposite I enjoyed DF first album but after that I just wasnt interested! Obituary on the other hand is one of my favs, every album (while not much deviation in the whole discogropgy) is excellent in my opinion, in fact I was pretty supprized to find them so far down on the list. Some bands (Death) I could see others siding with but "other" and Corpse (ive never really been a fan) was totally unexpected. There is just something about Obituary, I dunno i guess the vocals and the instrumentals do it for me

it all about preferences i see. i love fast and brutal death and i find "destroy the opposition" for example a marvellous album. obituary are slower and they have to create a magnificent album to make me love it as easy as i did with DF. it's all about taste.

Okay point made, Obituary cant compare to DF's speed. And I agree its all about personal taste

i'd hardly consider Necrophagist first generation. their first album came out in '99, a full five or six years after DM ascended from underground to mainstream buy-in, and complete collapse.

for me "first generation" would only entail bands that released albums between '87 through maybe '94.

He means the band Necrophagia which released their first full length in 1987 not Necrophagist

To many Death and Black metal bands are generic and similar. Death will always be supreme even with the fall of Chuck, but Cannibal Corpse be my next choice because they are more true death metal. I would classify Deicide as Black Metal so i don't find that choice appropriate.
