Name some albums that you think are truly excellent but seem to have been forgotten. Keep it to albums from 1999 or before.

Main one for me is Obtained Enslavement - Centuries of Sorrow. Often comparable to Gorgoroth's Antichrist but came out two years earlier. More epic and adventurous than 'Antichrist' but not as memorable. Fantastic album though. This band seems to be overlooked and even when they are mentioned people seem to be more interested in the second and third albums but the first one is fantastic.

Any more?

Yes it is overlooked, most people only know of old Anathema, My Dying Bride and old Paradise Lost when talking about Death/Doom.

But then you are talking about the casual listener of death doom, not the real death doom fans.
But looking at the greater picture they are if course somehow an obscure band. Both Winter and Paradise Lost formed in 1988 formed and released their debut album in 1990 (although Winter later in the year)
Winter's problem was that their debut was only released outside the US in 1992.
And Winter is of course way more death metal than even the first PL, My Dying Bride and Anathema. SOundweise current band COffins leans immensely on the true venomous sad ugliness of Winter's sound. The cover artwork just entirely typifies what Winter stands for.

Well considering I wrote a review for this album which I love so dearly, how about Eternal Nightmare by Vio-lence ftw? It absolutely boggles my mind to see that album only has 21 votes to date on the site.

Perhaps on this forum. If you asked on any forum aimed more at extreme metal fans you'd be unlikely to come across someone who doesn't have an opinion on this album.

Zombie, M.D.

Totenlieder by Absurd.

I'd assume it's probably more highly regarded among dumb nazis but they will listen to any garbage with some kind of NS association. I think this album is seriously awesome though and not too many people I come into contact with seem to think much of it. It's got that pseudo-punk "fuck you" attitude down to a science with some pretty neat guitar solos to boot. I have a suspicion I'd like it a little less if I could understand the lyrics and song titles though...

Yeah I agree about Winter. But that's only if you search on a specific forum. If we just talk about metalheads as a whole, I think Winter is overlooked since there are more metalheads into the melodic side of metal than the extreme one.
And even if we just think about the people who are into the extreme side of metal, many aren't really familiar to that kind of doom.
So yeah... in general the band would be overlooked [just like the debut of Disembowelment imo] but if we just count the doomsters... They are quite popular

But an album as odd as Into Darkness is never going to appeal to many melodic metal fans. We might as well say In the Nightside Eclipse is overlooked. Winter is one of the most well-known doom bands around excluding MDB, Anathema, Paradise Lost and the like.

As a rough definition, let's say this: An album that get's considerably less attention from the fans of the sub-genre it's part of than you feel it deserves.

Alot of the classic Black Metal albums are overlooked by many metal circle esspecially outside of the BM circle. I will say just a few for non BM fans to consider when looking for classics.
Emperor - Anthems of the Welken Dusk, Promethians: The Disipline of Fire and Dimise
Immortal - Damned in Black, Sons of Northern Darkness, At the Heart of Winter
1349 - Hellfire

I suppose this is a short list from my 3 favorite BM bands, but all well worth a listen.

Imo that isn't a classic album at all. It showed some glimmers of what was to come witht he subsequent releases, but as a whole I find it to be quite weak with just one strong song (In Search of the Peace of Mind)

Because it more less is a Black Sabbath rip-off?

Its Ironic that because they do sabbath better than sabbath there is little recognition for the work. (Acknowledging your personal enjoyment of the album.)

Maybe Resurrection's Embalmed In Existence which was one hell of a brutal death album.

It's not a bad album but it has a weakness: repetition. The songs sound all the same.
And it's standard old school Death Metal, not Brutal Death.

In my humble opinion I think that Therion's "Lepaca Kliffoth" and "Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas" are overlooked, specially by the fans of the band... Because most of them are just fans of the more symphonic stuff. But damn... This two albums are brilliant and fresh.

I think "Of Darkness" and "Beyond Sanctorum" are more overlooked. Most people don't even know that Therion started as a Death Metal band.
