Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2010

Wacken Open Air 2009 was a huge disappointment for many metal fans. In 2008 the world's biggest heavy metal festival has booked Iron Maiden as headliners and has raised the bar a bit too high for its own good. In 2009, the 20th anniversary of this legendary festival, a lot of bands appeared which have played in the years before already, but no uber headliner a la Iron Maiden to justify the high ticket price. Many people blamed the W:O:A to rely on its name only as the 20th edition was sold out eight months prior to the festival. In 2010 however the Wacken Open Air proves all these critics wrong...

Iron Maiden are back again! And this time they aren't the uber headliners of 2008, but only primus inter pares ("first among equals"): thrash titans Slayer, glam metal monsters Mötley Crüe and the father of shock rock Alice Cooper are also confirmed as headliners for the 21st edition. And as always there are a few special performances: Grave Digger celebrate their 30th anniversary by performing the entire "Tunes of War" album, a show which will also feature some special guests, while Swedish gothic metal pioneers Tiamat will be performing their legendary "Wildhoney" album, 20 years after the band Treblinka mutated into the Tiamat we know today. But even if you don't care for either of these bands, Wacken once again offers a wide array of metal styles for almost everyone: black metal with Immortal and 1349, death metal with Cannibal Corpse and grindcore supergroup Lock Up, power metal with Kamelot and Stratovarius, heavy metal with U.D.O. and W.A.S.P., modern metal with Fear Factory and Soulfly, etc. etc. etc.. All in all a whopping 122 acts will perform on five stages over a period of four days.

Wacken Open Air takes plays in - surprise! - Wacken in Northern Germany, a small village with merely 2,000 inhabitants on 361 days of the year. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km northwest of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

Certainly not the cheapest, but probably the most fun way to get to and from Wacken has to be the Metal Train. The "railway to hell" equals one huge party of 850 metalheads in one train with 16 wagons, which includes two dedicated disco wagons. Check the website for the schedule and prices.

The festival is officially sold out since April. Most tour operators (e.g. Metal Train for Germany, Bock Tours for the Netherlands, Germany, Austria or Switzerland, Argon Events for the UK) still have tickets in stock though.

Another way to acquire your ticket would be the ticket exchange in the official forum which aims for eliminating the black marketing going on eBay and reducing the risk of acquiring fake tickets. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

Pretty sure Slayer won't be playing. They have cancelled all their immediate shows, Tom is having back surgery

yeah, the things Araya went through these last months have been pretty fucked up.. i hope he'll get better soon though. and if (satan forbid) he decides to take a long break, i hope they manage to get a replacement bass player and vocalist..
it's such a shame that a great live band such as Slayer has to cancel so many shows.

Aha! So now they have the unique chance to get a really cool replacement band for Slayer. Like say ... uh ... from off the top of my head ... maybe a secret special second Germany show of Bloodbath?

LOL you're crazy.. i'd say a good replacement band would be Anthrax/Megadeth, since they're also part of the big 4, and Anthrax would have a leg up since they had to play last year but were canceled.. i was really looking forward to seeing them, instead of JBO.. i have a feeling last year there were too many German in-joke bands as Baz put it.. In Extremo, Schandmaul, Der W, Subway, JBO, and to some degree Doro and Running Wild..

Nah, I don't think putting Running Wild in the same league as JBO is a fair score. And you guys can bitch and moan all you want, the WOA always was and to some degree always will be a german festival with strong roots in the area and a huge german fan-base. And local bands usually don't have a good international reception (exept for a few like Rammstein) so it's natural for those bands to populate the german festivals. I would think that if Cynic played Hellfest they'd consider it a home match and also speak french. So what?

Yeah well, Anthrax might play the same style as Slayer but all in all I always found Thrash to be somewhat generic. Which you can't say about the style of Arcturus at least. And the reception Borknagar had in 2009 proves that there's an audience for this kind of music.

it might be that i enjoy their riffs more, but Slayer for me is Jeff and Kerry... i wouldn't accept replacements for them.. it's not like Araya has an incredible voice or mind-blowing bass riffs..

What do you mean by "automatically"? The fontend surely doesn't do it by itself. Anyway, this is confusing and begs to be changed to an either completely manual or completely automatic way.

There's this little checkbox "Rearrange bands by popularity", I don't know whether that's a staff only thing or viewable by everyone, but clicking it results in the order now seen above again.

It's a good thing to pay attention. The checkbox is indeed there even when you're a normal user. I still vote for this to become the default behavior.

I would think that if Cynic played Hellfest they'd consider it a home match and also speak french. So what?

You lost me on this one.
Cynic played Hellfest in 2007 and, of course, didn't speak a word of French. And why would they consider it a home match? As, you most probably, know, they are a US band (from Florida to be more precise) and now have a Dutch guitarist.

Haha! Good one. Yeah, I didn't mean Cynic, I meant Gojira. I was listening to Cynic earlier today and I'm known to make these associative mistakes. Good thing nobody else noticed

Aha Gojira now that makes sense if I remember correctly they did indeed address the crowd in French last year. And rightly so I would say. That always pissed me off at Dynamo Open Air that most of the times the ver few Dutch bands playing addressed the crowd in English, ffs, it is a Dutch festival with most people present from the Netherlands. Another thing I found annoying was that, unlike Wacken, Dynamo Open Air didn't give Dutch bands a chance to showcase in front of the large crowd.

As you know, I am not a fan of Wacken, but one thing I do admire is that they book quite a few German bands and give them the much needed exposure. A German fest should promote German bands, a French one French bands, A Dutch one Dutch etc etc,

That's my point, yes. But it seems we're alone with that.
I just wrote down the few Dutch bands I know (or that I know for being Dutch). And apart from Ayreon and Textures there's only symphonic bands in my mind. Epica, Autumn, After Forever, Within Temptation etc.. Seems like your country is most famous for the music you despise the most Maybe you should start your own festival and only promote local doom bands whose recording quality doesn't exceed that of the ordinary livingroom so the sound is as raw as possible.

Edit: Oh and of course it's forbidden to even use one word of english by penalty of an immediata ban from the grounds.

Haha! Good one. Yeah, I didn't mean Cynic, I meant Gojira. I was listening to Cynic earlier today and I'm known to make these associative mistakes. Good thing nobody else noticed

That's nowadays but of course we should be most famous for the late 80s early 90s death metal. Pestilence, Asphyx, Thanatos, Sempiternal Deathreign, Gorefest (although I find them to be either a borefest or a snorefest )
Pestilence and Asphyx have of course reformed and can now be joined by those other masters of old school death metal Hail Of Bullets.

The German bands you mentioned neither count as folk nor as metal. We're talking about the worst abomination of music ever created: Audible vomit. No real man plays bagpipes. And no band should need to rape violins like these do to give their music a faint hint of ...of what? Quality? Yes, because a violin is such a precious instrument, and any band using one is automatically so deep and emotional. Give me a guinea pig and a set of dissection instruments, maybe a fart-amplifier and I will show you folk metal. And don't get me started on bands using a lyre on stage that then emphasize how hard they really are (no really, they are obviously really hard) in any interview ever conducted.
I understand you speak quite a bit of German. So you at least have a feeling how ridiculously plain and shallow the lyrics of most of these idiotic sorry excuses for bands are. If they didn't sing in german, they'd never sell a single CD anywhere. Not for what they call music. The only reason there is to attract a german audience at the youngest possible age so that this audience gets used to being ear-raped and doesn realize the extreme dimension of simplicity and shallowness they're fed anymore when their minds start to develop and they turn into human beings.
We're talking about indoctrination here.

Seriously that should be punished.

nice rant hahahahahaha so Bon Scott wasn't a real man by your reckoning also seems you see IE and StS as some kind of pop bands considering the absurd amount of people i've met there(not only at Wacken) who rave about StS and IE(you know, the groups of 3 girls each with the histrionic make-up, dyed black hair and ripped black pantyhose..) i can see what you're talking about..

for lyrics in languages outside of Romanan i don't care too much how cheesy they are, Manowar is my 5th favorite band after all haha (especially when not talking about English, but languages i don't know too good like German or something, yeah my German may be fun to read but let's face it: it's fucking crap!), so i don't really care for In Extremo's or Subway's lyrics(especially IE's Occitan/weird half french-half spanish songs), i do like Ave Maria and some other songs by IE(not the ones they played at WOA sadly), imo they did manage to turn a religious song into a good metal tune. kinda like the first part of "Revelations" by Maiden.

there IS a very real chance i won't be able to get there this year, due to the German job opportunity in the summer, but to be honest between working some shit job and Wacken, i'll take WOA any day of the calendar.

i'm curious if there is gonna be another big band announcement or this is the final line-up when it comes to headliners. i hope not, they already have a very solid line-up but they can (and should) make it KILLER. Rammstein would be the cherry on top imo. something for the people to say "omg they couldn't have possibly gotten a better string of headliners"

I disagree. As stated numerous times before, Rammstein doesn't exactly fit into the german metal scene. Yes, most of us have or do still listen to them but at least speaking for myself and a number of friends, that is for entirely different reasons than we listen to metal for. There are big MTV festivals here where they are frequent flyers and there's a pretty well-established industrial scene too. The last thing I would want is to see Rammstein in Wacken. It just doesn't feel right. Plus it would not exactly add to the variety. There are way more interesting bands out there to help with that. There's a good chance for an Arcturus reunion and the woa guys had better keep a slot open there

well, it's pretty weird since pretty much every metalhead here considers Rammstein as metal as can be... well, at least the ones who know "Ich Will" and MAYBE "Engel" too and say they're die hard fans which make up for 90% of people who have heard of them here : i've yet to come across a REAL Rammstein fan in Romania who doesn't just know those songs by them. also 99% of the times it's girls who think like that, almost every conversation is like this:

me: so, you listen to rock and metal?
poser: yeah
me: what bands?
poser: Guns n Roses, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, Rammstein
me: oooh, Rammstein and Scorpions, what's your favorite songs by them?
poser: uhm... Ich Will and Wind of Change
me: my hard-on has just subsided because of your stupidity

And there you have the reason for my contempt for the german metal scene (or the worldwide one, I don't yet know) and german bands. I Germany you can, if I may simplify, break the scene down into two dominant groups of peole. One of those is pretty much the guy/girl you just described only their conception of metal reduces to the music of some or all of the following bands: In Extremo, Schandmaul, Subway to Sally, Marilyn Manson, Children Of Bodom, Metallica and a few other way too obvious numbers. While on the other hand they completely dismiss anything I'd call decent or deep as boring. Then there are the guys who were forced into metal by being outsiders at their school (or whatever) and the fact that many popular bands reflect upon exactly that experience, only turning it into a good thing. There's a behavior you can observe with many minorities (I'm also disgusted by the very same fact with about 90% of the Linux community), and that is what germans call 'Elitarismus'. I couldn't find an English word for that. It basically means that you think of yourself and the people like you as an elite because you think you differ from the masses in certain ways. For those guys the fact they have no friends (I'm simplifying!) is a good and more than that intentional thing. And for some reason this is usually combined with listening to metal. Again there are players as dominant as Children Of Bodom, Korn, Slipknot, and if you meet a guy who actually looked at the scene a bit maybe Dimmu Borgir and Immortal playing in this league.
And then, to close the circle there are all these German "folk metal" bands that just plain reap these people into their ranks while there are bands outside whose music and lyrics can make a grown man cry for being just so perfectly woven together, for lyrics so deep you can get lost inside and never find a way out again, for music that you actually have to work with to comprehend all of it, for the slight, almost inaudible melody here and there, carefully hidden under a massive wall of acoustic chaos, for all of those things you know.
And I don't even feel like elite myself. In fact I'd like to gather all of these kids in a huge hall and show them all this awesome music that is right at their hands which they'll never listen to because there's also In Extremo...

yeah i kinda get how you're feeling. i think of the amount of people who think Metallica is the greatest band in history and love all their albums (including that gigantic turd of an album released in 2003) but haven't heard other decent metal bands in their life, they only listen to Slipknot, System of a Down, Disturbed, Cradle of Filth perhaps(the amount of CoF fanbitches around here was off the charts a few years ago) maybe Nightwish(just Nemo to be more precise), Manson(Tainted Love) or Rammstein(Ich Will), and i want to play them some fucking RUNNING WILD so they can get an idea of what metal made without too much desire for cash in mind sounds.

i'm getting extremely off topic now but seriously, that band is the classic of the classics, there is no other band i've heard that sounds as classic 80s traditional metal as them, not even Priest or Maiden who helped define the genre itself. RW is out of this world.

btw i think the word you were looking for was "elitism" or "elitists"
