Bitch, a feminist magazine, published the article "Horning In -- The case for feminist metal" in their fall 2008 issue. It talks about famous women in metal and why women should play metal, as well as the parts of metal that are pro-feminist.

Puh feminists...I'm so sick of that shit, why don't they get on the band wagon with the "african-americans", jews, gays etc. and complain some more about subject matters that are pre-'60s. I think these people are making themselves targets, they are creating definitive lines and seperating themselves.
These so called "minorities" have presence, power and position every where! There are cops, judges, lawyers, doctors, engineers, university teachers, accomplished artists, government officials and so on and so forth that are women, and other alleged "minorities".

The article was crap, just a lot of complaining about nothing, hell, the article proves its own author wrong; that women are in prominent positions of metal! As for WITTR, fuck them. For one, they're a bunch of band wagon hopping poseurs that came over from hippy loving punk bands, they have actually HAD THEIR MUSIC FEATURED IN AT LEAST ONE PORN "FILM" and, one of them owns a club in Olympia which is now shut down, and I've spoken with an old time rocker turned music store owner who's attested that the onwer of the club (WITTR member) flashed some under age girl at a venue one night - WITTR "ecofeminism" is nothing but more bullshit!

And, I'm done on this subject.

WITTR has nothing to do with subject. So stop your biased ramblings about them.

I actually have a female friend who absolutely despises women being involved in anything to do with rock/metal (blanket terms here), unless we're talking about the cranberries. This friend will happily abuse the authors of books I lend her on grounds of sexism ("he seems to think that women exist only to be raped" - and no, I didn't lend her Terry Goodkind).

I personally enjoy seeing women in bands - its a lot nicer than seeing hairy dudes. I'm a fan of Ava Inferi for a woman with a gorgeous voice. She really suits the music (on Burdens at any rate).

I will admit here that I got into Arch Enemy largely for the novelty of hearing a woman scream, less because I was into that kind of music at the time, and a little because she is hot. But then my she-friend listens to HIM and NIN and says the same thing about respective lead singers. And, to be honest, I kinda do the same thing with dudes. It was a lot easier to get used to Troy Sanders as a musician than Brent Hinds I should at this stage say that he is an amazing guitar player and a fantastic musician, but I'm trying to make a point. More effective using Hinds than Chad kroeger. There's a very different reason why i don't listen to his music.

What I dislike is women using sex to sell music. Cristine Scabbia (Lacuna coil) may be one of the most gorgeous women on the planet, but she sells it. I'm just not comfortable with being marketed to in such an obvious way. Its too easy, and its used on men in almost every aspect of life. I don't want to see it in metal. I know this contradicts the first paragraph a bit but it makes sense in my head dammit! I'm not against good looking people, but your music should be marketed on its good qualities, with you being good looking as a happy aside for the viewer's pleasure. That makes sense. Notice the stream of consciousness form of posting I'm employing here. Love not editing crap. Fuckin magnets, how do they work?

I agree with most of the article, but I think it is iterating the obvious. There are labels specifically targeted at bands fronted by females (they've got unexpect and stolen babies and maybe sleepytime gorilla museum), and there was that concert a while back that was reviewed on here and I read it and it was good and it was all about women. Bit of sex marketing there but not too much.

Minor issues: Sass on Tarja Turinen, who essentially made Nightwish as big as they are, then loses out on credit to annette (no disrespect to either party, love them both, etc etc etc.)

I don't listen to Cannibal Corpse based on lyrical content. It makes me uncomfortable when i listen to things like "there are a dozen women lying dead and raped in my basement" (thats paraphrasing and may not be 100% accurate, and they may not actually have a song that bad, but I'm thinking along the lines of fucked with a knife as well oh god its late at night) it (to me) feels like I'm promoting that kind of brutality and I'm not okay with it. I know i'm not supposed to take it seriously etc etc etc but still.

It is a case of underrepresentation (it is SO a word you bastard spell check). Framework is in place.

Okay, re reading this, I feel the need to assure everyone that I am indeed a man. I'm about to go watch some porn and go to bed, I promise. I'm also not a sexist, and enjoy female vocals, both singing and (admittedly to a lesser extent) screaming. Angela Gossouw is hot. Its late. Goodnite.

Go light!

Please read this or I will have wasted the last 20mins ish of my life.

I don't understand why this would still be an issue.I think by now people get it : Women can play metal.I don't think they were ever discriminated against, it's just that classic metal as always seen as masculine music.

Though I don't particularly like that people seem to think there is such a thing as "Femme-metal".I knew a couple of people who used this term, and when I asked what bands were femme-metal, I was just pointed in the direction of bands like Lacuna Coil, Flyleaf and Nightwish....this I didn't like.A genre determined solely by the lead singers gender? It's silly if you ask me.
