Lets go straight to the point: I understand in the free-world, if you try to hide your IP, identity, etc then there's probably something wrong with you For example you want to access porn sites at work/home and need to hide from the boss/parents...
But well, it's entirely different here. Try to load a page for news and see: "Dear subscriber, You don't have permission to visit this page According to the IR law".
On the other hand, trying to get the simplest products- googletoolbar for example: "Thanks for your interest, but the product that you're trying to download is not available in your country"...Even Anti virus updats and so on...You can give 'em all -including Google guys- a nice middle finger by fake IPs, VPNs, etc...

In addition to the usual censorship, on special occations ISPs are also forced to close particular ports dedicated to Yahoo/Live messengers or SMTP...

There are several tools published, lets review a few famouse/controversial ones:

Tor creates a chain (usually 3) of nodes so that you surf through different nodes located around the world.

You-->N1-->N2-->N3-->www.youtube.com

Therefore, the EntryNode that knows who you are is unaware of the content because of encryption. The 3rd node is capable of data-encryption using keys but unaware of your identity...
Now imagine what happens if the owner of N1 and N3 exchange information!
If the hacker manages to correctly match the gathered information from N1 and N3 will then know both the identity and the content. Fortunately, doing the math in order to make an accurate match using end-to-end correlation seems to be not that easy.

Tor provides an acceptable level of anonymity but no security. as expected, it's slow. But the main trouble is that sensitive data can be intercepted at the ExitNode (the 3rd one). It means your Email address and password can be monitoerd/manipulated/etc by third parties
yet they may not be able to locate you physically...

Regarding the misuses mentioned earlier, an example of a Tor case is the urge of a tool to pinpoint pedophiles who used Tor( built by a hacker in 2007).

Another example is Freegate which was identified as trojan by Norton AntiVirus, though Symantic later announced it had been a false positive bacause the software used open proxies to penetrate firewalls...

Won't go further, just wanted to give some in-depth understanding of how those tools work and surrounding issues...

As far as i know, The Chinese Great Firewall, also recognizes and blocks google cache links (although there's a Firefox extension to skip it), but IR doesnt. I hope they never decide to follow China in this matter at least...

Sadly, speed and security are the most important factors we lose even if manage to scape f.i.l.t.e.r.ing. That's why i prefer to use cached pages. Firefox has some add-ons that help you easily view pages usig Google cache. IMO, this is the best way to surf for reading purposes (not filling forms, forums, etc).

These are the links for add-ons i strongly suggest (to fellow Iranian MSers mainly):
* TADSEE 0.9.3
* Cache View

They will add additional options when you right-click on a link helping you view the cached page. This works best for reading the news, articles, etc if you don't want to be exposed to the extra delay pr0xies, VPNs, etc impose...
Oh...And it's also usefull when a web-page is temporarily unavailable due to technical problems, DOS attacks, etc...

Your turn! What do you think? Discuss the pros & cons, your experiences and suggestions..
PS: Please, Just remember not to over-use forbidden words (pr0xy, fi1ter, an0nymizer, etc) or mis-spell 'em to fool IR fi1tering. This request is weird for you, i see, but Let's not make MetalStorm get bl0cked for us...Thank you.

Well, it's a fucked up situation here, these days even VPNs work incorrectly.. And access is getting more and more limited every day.. I think no country like Iran has blocked websites like this.. Iran already has the very last place in internet speed and very first place in internet price..

What about ISPs? Can they track websites you browse? And can they access to them? Or they'll be deleted as temporary files on their servers?

You-->N1-->N2-->N3-->www.metalstorm.ee

Do they block MS in IRAAN? FTW....

The sites I couldn't use in China were youtube (since March 2009), I don't know if they removed the ban meanwhile....uncyclopedia (why?)...they temporarily banned google but then removed the block....google image search was kinda striking all the time...

China is, in fact, rather liberal about internet.... it is stupid to ban Google and gmail for accusations of helping to spread pornographic material or ban youtube because of "Tibet Tibet" videos....everyone knows anyway and people in China are the world's largest internet audience....there is no way of keeping them away from the information....

You could use a thing called Hotspot Shield and this opened all sites for you....I even remember I recommended Hospot shield to you in Iran....have you tried it....you can find it if you google "Sesawe", enter the site of Sesawe and download the software....

No.. But it's possible with threads such as this one, some serious discussion threads and at the top of them Iranian Metalstormers.. If they track some photo links which are put here, or some key words they will find this website.. And then they'll filter them

You could have if things hadn't suddenly changed in the late 80s. I believe, with no intent on offending anybody, that people in Iran or over countries where the freedom of speech or the freedom to consult and use data from other countries is controlled are the only ones who can change the situation. A gouvernment is only strong if the people give it that strengh. A brilliant film that looks at this subject is V for Vendetta, in which one states that the people should not fear their government but that the gouvernment should fear it's people. The problem is that in a lot of third world countries, the people actually do fear their gouvernment and it is up to them to reverse the situation.

One thing I absolutely hate is repression; not having the freedom to do what you want to do.
Websites being blocked seems like such a backwards and wrong thing to do to me sat here in this country where I am used to having the freedom to do and see what I want.
My sympathy goes out to the people who have aspects of their lives restricted and repressed for no good reason.

What about ISPs? Can they track websites you browse? And can they access to them? Or they'll be deleted as temporary files on their servers?

1. Can they? YES, They technically can.
2. Will They? I don't know. But be carefull.

ISPs can monitor your activities and even store the whole thing in log-files, because all the traffic in & out your PC goes through your ISP. But this means a waste of resourses (memory, cpu, time,...) if they want to do that for every single user they provide service to.
I think they won't, unless you make them suspecious (Over-using forbidden keywords and constantly vising urls in black-lists) or governmental authorities ask them so.
There's not much you can hide from your ISP. Typically Packets are in plain text, you can use Encryption but this will raise suspicious aside from speed matters...Same is for SSH Thunelling and A.n.o.n.y.m.i.z.e.rs, VPNs...They may know you're using cryptography for example, but will have no access to the content...
Since it's your ISP that allocates you the IP, they also can make table of all IP assignments if needed...

As for the servers on the other side of your connection...Web-sites you visit....They Won't know much about you, even if they want to track you. Knowing your IP, they won't get any closer to you than your ISP. Even those IP2Location tools that provide zip-codes, give the ISP's Zip-Code, not yours...

However there's a simple thing you can do at least, always clear your private data including Coockies, Browsing History, Cache, etc so that if Baradarane SEPAH take your case with them won't be able to retrieve them all from your hard easily.

No, that was just an example, not an accurate one...Edited that on the first post...

and gmail...

As i said earlier IR aslo does that on special occasions...during the post-elections protests, Messengers were unavailable, Yahoo/Hot/gmail won't load... because they had closed related ports, thus meebo, using http, was available...

Yes, i remember you naming that on our thread...But the page seemed to encounter problems, both then and now...Couldn't download Sesawe.

...one states that the people should not fear their government but that the gouvernment should fear it's people.

I remember i once read a quote from a dictator in a book: "99% of people disagree with me, but who cares only the remaining 1% have guns".

That's it. When there's no independant press, no free journalism, no free media, no nothing....Then Internet is no exception...

I am strongly against internet censorship for two reasons.
1 - There is no proven or even test way of ensuring that certain desired censored sites are in fact censored, in fact it is used mainly as an excuse by some governments to censor certain information that may be hardful to their policies.

2 - I don't believe that censorship should be entirely in the hands of the state. Because the state will always have its own agenda (that of the impowered government). Also parents should take some level of resposiblity for what their kid are doing on the internet. Put in place protocols and monitor you children regularly when they are on the internet.

I would be all for an independant international organization to monitor the internets content, but censorship by the state can too easily cross the line into freedom of speech. Besides even China has a huge amount of trouble stopping incoming information with their so called "internet black-hole".

4 months passes and it's already around 3 months that caching is no longer working (as a method to by pass IR f1ltering)...
What an enviable peferct life. *sigh*

The deep web is a pretty serious place to search! You can find all sorts of nasty things like CP and guns for hire.
