I know there are more of us here than Marcel and I... (I'm looking at you Lord Regnier and BitterCOld)

I figured we could use a thread of our own to discuss those things that are a concern to us aging metalheads, like actually buying albums and reminiscing about the scenes we grew up on and other things of little interest to all these young whippersnappers that are overrunning this place.

So...how many of us can still pull off the long hair without a hat? I know I'm out.

Terrific. Back then in 2002 I was standing infront near to barricade in System of a Down's gig and dude! the amount of fucking push and heads which was clashing on my shoulders was fucking incredible.

How old were you then? Couldn't have been 12?

Naaah! I told my parents that I'm going in a gig( as My dad is a Heavy Metal freak..so he allowed me) but they warned me not to have a single blood on my body or else make your fucking arrangement to live outside this house for a week--that's what my mom said. But, yeah...i came back clean and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Think I might take my 17 year old daughter to Iron Maiden this summer...giddy up?

I wish my parents let me go see Maiden when I was 16/17, let alone go with me

For that...parents should be aware of what Heavy Metal is all about/ they themselves are the big fan of Metal music. Rest apart, many parents just don't even give a proper fuck to this genre and stop their beautiful kids to go in such kinda concerts. May be...your case is among one of these...:D

Nah, my mom is pretty tolerant to my love of metal, but she's pretty paranoid, so, even when she did in fact want to allow me to go to shows, she demanded that my brother escorts me, and he hardly cared for making that happen, so I didn't go to a lot of shows until I turned 18.

'Kay, if the age limit ups to 40 I'll still qualify. Don't know whether to laugh to cry...

I turned 40 this year and celebrated by going to see Alestorm and Claim the Throne

So apparently I'm an offical old fart .. oh well. On the upside, I have seen it all unfold and I'm beginning to enjoy that a lot since joining this site. My first "Proper Big Metal Gig" was Anthrax and Metal Church when I was 15, followed shortly after by Slayer on their Reign in Blood tour (My Anthrax T-Shirt from the previous month got destroyed there, along with a good number of braincells and my right boot) and apart from a few years when I was hitting a lot of techno squat parties in the '90s it's been metal all the way. I work a lot at festivals so I mostly get to hang out with hippies these days and my headphones get more use than my speakers. But there are a few here and there who recognize the sound of good music and it's always a pleasure to catch up and have a little moshpit moment around the van

I found Metalstorm while I was looking for reviews of Illud Divinum Insanus, I laughed so much I stuck around...

Confession - I listen to Death Metal while gardening. Now that's old fart-y.

Mythbusters actually tested that... seven greenhouses. 2 with spoken praise, 2 with spoken hostility, 1 with classical music, 1 with "death metal" (Chimaira, apparently... ) , and a control with nothing.

metal plants dominated, with classical next... talking nice/nasty seemed immaterial, aside from outperforming silent control.

That is so cool.

Just goes to show that instinct is better than received wisdom. And there's an advantage of getting older .. instinct improves. Hopefully!

the only time i've seen 60yos at a gig is when i saw Sabbath... hell, even then they were probably only in their 50's.

I am 63 years old and I go to many concerts or gigs of the underground local bands here in my country. I saw Therion, Kreator, Destruction, Entombed, Hypocrisy, Anvil, Primal Fear, Violator, Sepultura and many other bands here in Bolivia and I went to Lima (Perú) to see Iron Maiden (2009). I really love metal, it's a very important part of my life.
