I really love this band, they are one of my overall favourites at the moment,

i have heard In The Arms Of Devastation, Shadows & Dust, Serenity In Fire and the live album Northern Hyperblast, which i didnt like though,

i think in the arms of devastation isnt nearly as good as Shadows And Duts or Serenity In Fire, but i still think its a quite good cd, i see the other two as masterpieces of deathmetal though

This band is so meh. All of the albums I listened to by them were either just decent or bad. Prevail is bad.

I agree with you here, what i've heard of Kataklysm never impressed me, to me it's run-of-the-mill DM. Nothing special in their music. I guess some people like simplistic and ordinary sounding bands.

Have you both heard Shadows and Dust? I consider that album to be nearly essential for most death metal fans. THis band definitely have their downfalls and there are some weaker albums than others, but I'd personally say that they are at least above average.

"Epic: The Poetry of War" and "Shadows and Dust" are both very good and solid death metal albums, not too original, but not what I'd call run-of-the-mill either. If these two are also too "simplistic and ordinary" for you though, dare to give their first two albums "Sorcery" and "Temple of Knowledge" a try, from a time when Sylvaine still fronted the band. I'm sure you'll think differently about the band afterwards

I found Sorcery on Napster yesterday and after one listen of the whole album, i was suprised, this older material is actually very good. The vocals on Sorcery are fucking monstrous, i'm beginning to wonder if Chalky (ex-Psycroptic) was inspired by this dude, Sylvain you say ?

The music is alot more interesting on this album than their newer material imo, they really put in alot of care into their craft, to bad they haven't continued that way. I'm going to check out Temple of Knowledge now, thanks dude, ...but i still think their newer stuff is boring.

Well to each their own, but at least it's more unique and versatile than their new stuff.

LOL great story! Halfway through I was thinking, "maybe he's finally too embarrassed by the shit the band is putting out" but no... of course there's a much less desirable explanation.

They seem to have travelled pretty much up and down a hill with Shadows & Dust being the peak - that's apart from the first two albums which are very much worth a download, at the least. But yeah, Shadows got remastered recently, and you'd probably like any of the others judging by your fav bands.

I have issues with this band. i want to isolate the vocals from the music. the music is so mind-numbingly generic but the vocals are just beastly. it's weird because i actually WANT to listen to kataklysm but i just can't get over how generic the sound is. and i'm super picky about vocals, so it's really frustrating to actually come across A+ vocals but hate the music. this is the ONLY band that i've ever encountered this kind of dilemma.

Well, new album has been up for listening on their Myspace for quite some time now. It mostly works for me. No overly memorable "hits", but as a whole, I've listened to the album quite a few times and I'm not bored of it (unlike Prevail, which I've listened to once, and never after). There is one song that has stuck to me ('Suicide River'). While it doesn't top the older times, it has a good feel to it. Dunno where I would rank this album exactly compared to others, because most of Kataklysm's albums are a bit of a mess of good songs, mediocre songs and crappy songs, but it would be more near the top.

I beg to differ. Tear down the Kingdom (on Prevail) is my favorite death metal song ever. For years now Kataklysm has leaned toward a melodic style. Their older stuff ranges from slightly technical to just noisy-blastbeating, but I think they've really come along well over time. To each his own though.

I listened to a couple of songs by them, and it sounded like what would happen if a nu metal band tried to play death metal. Nothing really worth looking into.

What songs? From The Prophecy to The Arms of Devastation I'd say they play legitimate no-bullshit death metal. Not like Immolation or Nile, but in no way do Kataklysm represent a nu-metal band attempting death metal in my opinion.

That kind of description should be reserved for The Unspoken King.

I usually don't react at childish posts, but now I have to. "I listened to a couple of songs by them". Ok, so you don't know them, you didn't listen to them properly and you didn't see them live.
It seems to me you just listened to three youtube or myspace songs and made up your mind.
