Under a Funeral Moon is the cream in the Oreo of Darkthrone's Peaceville trilogy, a cream that seems to be overlooked by fans - most likely due to the change in ingredients. It's only a slight change, but a change nonetheless. Compared to her siblings, she's the ugly one of the bunch, but definitely the smartest.

I love this album. Either this or A Blaze In the Northern Sky is my favorite by Darkthrone.

I wasn't expecting much from this album, considering that it was the follow-up to the monumental 'A blaze in the northern sky', but it certainly performs as well as that album. Obviously the songs are shorter and more 'immediate', but there is a lot to like about this album if you're a fan of Black Metal. 'Natassja in eternal sleep' and the aptly titled 'Unholy Black Metal' prove to be excellent slabs of raw Black Metal, whereas the epic 'To walk the infernal fields' (which resembles 'Enter the eternal fire' by Bathory to me) and brilliant title track shows the band's great songwriting skills. 'Summer of the diabolical holocaust' and 'Inn I De Dype Skogers Favn' don't impress me as much as the aforementioned tracks, but they're still generally solid.

This for me is the best out of the Unholy Trinity. Scandinavian Black Metal is Under a Funeral Moon. It's just the openness of the sound that was so striking when I first heard it. Transilvanian Hunger just did not give that to me as much as Funeral Moon did. It is Darkthrone at their most aggressive and brutal, every sound pierces you to the bone.

The album does not feel like a solid piece; the songs are individually good but fail to flow into each other to create a wholesome piece. Listening to this album alternates between it being a chore and some good moments like on unholy black metal and the title track. The songs are ugly and unfriendly as good black metal should be but the beauty in the dark ugliness is lacking. Not a memorable album and this is simply the band rehearsing to release their best black effort Transilvanian hunger.

You are not metal enough until you visit Kenya. The cradle of mankind, where man learnt first to work with stones and first enjoyed the sounds produced by banging stones which later influenced metal in all its sounds and genres.

This is legendary album right? Sorry all todays ms bands and all one man projects in home cabin studio whit bad windows millennium lap top gets better sound as this, so raw, unpolished, bad quallity. How did they survive? and get legend icon status? This should be re record. Its bad, how band survive, other bands simply are better, all those new bands whit sound, this is horible.

Production is just another subjective element of music. Personally I think the occult vibe and evil atmosphere benefit from the raw sound, and the razor thin mix elevates the guitars and drums in a way that even copycat bands of today struggle to recreate. It's not surprising this is considered legendary as it encapsulates everything black metal and features some of the band's most nuanced, thoughtful songwriting.

A Nice Guy
The sheer rawness of Darkthrone's unholy trinity is legendary, and this is probably the harshest and most evil sounding of them all imo. Although I slightly prefer both A Blaze In The Northern Sky, and Transilvanian Hunger's quality over this one, this still has it's great moments. And "To Walk The Infernal Fields" has to be one of the best songs in black metal history Imo.
