I'm relatively knew to the genre and have just gotten into it through bands like Esoteric, Shape of Despaor and Swallow the sun.
I would like to get further into this genre and reccomendations would be much appreciated.

Can't really say otherwise, I don't know too much about the genre, what defines extreme doom?

Well, out of the three you mentioned I would say that Ahab is a bit more extreme. But that's why I love about Doom you know... the meaning of extreme is a bit blurry and since Doom is a genre heavily based on atmosphere... It depends if the atmosphere is extreme to you.

I personally see Ahabs debut to be quite extreme, I really felt the pressure of the ocean and the fearful beast that was the white whale... Not to mention that I can't swim very well and I'm a bit scared about drowning and stuff so I have deep respect for the ocean... So for me that album was a bit of a schock at first, in the good sense of the word.

I wouldn't see Shape Of Despair as extreme due to the extremely beautiful atmosphere (imo) that SOD creates, it's a sad one indeed but very pretty and elegant. I don't really like STS but they remains me to some My Dying Bride stuff and both bands seems to safe and not heavy to create a dangerous feeling of doom.

Probably that's the way I would put it: I don't feel the DOOM... That feeling when you know you have lost the battle that is life... I don't really feel it in those two bands for example, probably Shape Of Despair but they do it in a pretty way But bands like Catacombs, Esoteric, Ahab, Acid Bath, Bloody Panda, Dolorian, Early Katatonia, Khanate among others really make you feel tiny. But that's just me.

Ah I see where you're coming from, why I really like STS is for that very reason: they are a light melodic doom band. I found their albums to be on quite a high level musically, but I see that isn't really contigent with some of the other examples of extreme doom bands.

I think the qualifier "extreme doom" is a little useless, personally. There are substyles in doom, and they seem more useful in describing and categorizing the music. Traditional, funeral, drone etc. are all pretty clear. But there are funeral doom bands that sound quite melodic, and even the MS Awards has doom/death in both the vanilla and the extreme categories. The extreme/vanilla distinction doesn't respect subgenre boundaries, leading us to use two sets of categorizing standards. And that's unnecessary baggage, IMO.

To be honest, I think the separation into "melodic" and "extreme" metal is too arbitrary to be useful on the grander scale, and doom is just a specific example of that. In fact, I think the tag is so popular on MS because the forum is seperated into Melodic and Extreme subcategories. It's not the only reason, but that has to be part of it because the distinction is way more common here than elsewhere.

I haven't put everything in, cause I couldn't be bothered... Some might already be in Marcel's list... and some might not be that extreme...

Woebegone Obscured and their album Deathstination (yes, the album name is ridiculous). They play some really raw and good blackened Funeral Doom.

You're extremely late to the party

Hell, the album was even nominated for best extreme doom album here at MS in 2010 where it came in second

Btw they have two new songs out on their split with Officium Triste. It was released not too long ago.

Btw I keep seeing that should of stuff surface more and more here on MS and especially in posts by native speakers of English, such as Kesh. My God there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to write that sort of eyesore
